Nirvana and other bands general chit chat. Here are a couple bands that could start off the conversation that I like:

Nirvana (duh)
The Sex Pistols

I'll admit i don't think they're gods, but i do like them.
They were a turning point, so to speak, in the evolution of music.
So were the beatles, and oasis and a lot of other bands.
I can't say that they're over-rated

i have major respect for nirvana, grunge pioneers etc, and even more respect for the pistols, great band going where nobody else dared, and pulling a great stunt on the silver jubilee. They went in directions many others refused to go in, and some that are still touchy subjects to day, such as their anti abortion song "bodies"

I agree with mr jones about Nirvana. The are a great band andmade some great music but there is no need to diefy them. They weren't that great, and kobian wasn't that great of an artist. There have been better singers who wrote better lyrics that aren't even noted for what they write. Nirvana just got lucky and found their way into the mainstream.

I basically agree wiht the above. Nirvana was a good band. Much of the respect I have for them is due to innovation. I like some of their songs, and, although i respect them, theyre not one of my favorites.

I have to dissagree here, Nirvana are totaly the best, and no i'm not a 12yr old thinking Kurt is so fit! lol, ia m just a normal person who thinks that he coped with a tough life and it came out in his songs and lyrics, i think his suicide contributed to their fame but they became famouse long before he shot himself. And as a child Kurt always say he was going to become a famous rock star and then kill himself!

Admitedly Nirvana was a good band they brought a lot to music and were a kind-of turning point.

But.

They are a tad over rated, yes they were good, yes they brought a bit to metal but they were not a big as impact as say... Metallica.

Now a days it's mostly the teenage girls who fantasies over Kurt who rave about them. (*points to above post*) They don't see that there was more to Nirvana than just one person. Though admitedly Kurts vocals were quite diffrent to things at the time and still quite defining now.

misconception: nirvana started grunge
there were enough bands around before nirvana started that were grunge. mudhoney, tad, bundle of hiss, the melvins and green river were all around before nirvana and were more instrumental in starting up the seattle sound that formed into grunge.
Kurt Cobain is quoted on numerous occasions that the melvins inspried him to form nirvana. when the melvins were starting off, he did not miss a gig.
because soundgarden and pearl jam got big record deals, instead of having their albums released on labels such as sub pop, record labels such as geffen were looking for the next big band to come out of Washington State. so they signed nirvana and the rest is history, as they say.
having said that, i am still a nirvana fan.

Nirvana didn't bring anything to Metal.

They were part of the "big 5" grunge bands.

Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Pearl Jam
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots

This genre was dubbed "The Seattle sound".

This had absolutely nothing to do with metal music whatsoever, so as far as grunge goes, Nirvana were the gods of their music.

They never really sold out, even though they were incredibly mainstream. Kurt Kobain even said how manufactured the Nevermind album was and then went on to release the (in my opinion) much much better In Utero album in 1994, which was recorded in 2 weeks... which was definately not commercialised.

Indeed they did not start grunge you are right. They were inspired by it and ended up helping the bring it too the masses.

to be honest, i love Nirvana. it's not Kurt's fault they became commercial after he died. you can't judge music just because it has become commercial, all it means is that it produces masterpieces such as Nevermind. Bleach is a great album and that wasn't commercial.

first of all...courtney killed kurt.

next, i have quite an obsession with nirvana (and the sex pistols are great) kurt especially, becuase of the way he choses to comunicate and make spacy images in his art.

i think nirvana put grundge on the mainstream, not metal. (kurt did not much like metal or hard core music himself) i agree with garg on this one

Yeh well said, i do like nirvana but as you said there not gods.
Stupid 12 yr olds.lol. If there are any 12yr olds on here, the reason why kurt kobain committed suiced was probably because of drugs and shit.
