View Full Version : The fact it's not a 'real' sport isn't up for debate.

Hello.
My name is Dingbat and I am a self-confessed professional wrestling fan.
Notice I don't call myself a fan of WWE (which a lot of you will probably remember as being called WWF previous to a lawsuit with the World Wildlife Fund). This is because I enjoy all sorts of professional wrestling; most prominently, NWA:TNA, WWE's closest American competitor; Ring of Honor, NJPW/AJPW and of course I still enjoy to reminisce over the likes of ECW and to a lesser extent WCW.
Anyway; I have started this thread because I refuse to believe that in a forum with over 13,000 members, I am the only fan of professional wrestling and as such the only person who enjoys it.
So, come on; don't be shy. I'm honest, you should be too.
Oh; and the first person to come in and say "don't you know its not real?" gets a skelp round the ear. Most of the world has known that it's "not real" since about 1980.
Some topics up for discussion, anyway. My main resources come from Rajah (http://rajah.com), Insidepulse Wrestling (http://wrestling.insidepulse.com) and to a lesser extent Pro Wrestling Insider (http://www.pwinsider.com/index56.asp) (major popup warning for PWI and to a lesser extent for Rajah).
Christian recently quit WWE due to his contract being up and being offered lower pay. He is likely to show up at tonight's TNA pay-per-view event 'Genesis'. Was this a good move for all parties concerned, and what will Christian be doing tonight if he shows up?
World Heavyweight Champion Batista (SmackDown!) is likely to be out for about three months having suffered an injury at SmackDown! last Friday; with the exception of tonight's SmackDown taping (usually taking place on a Tuesday) in which he will face Randy Orton and Eddie Guerrero in a Triple Threat for his title. Who will take the title, and what will happen to Batista?
John Cena is set to defend his WWE Championship against Kurt Angle at WWE Survivor Series. Is it time to give Angle the belt considering that Cena as of late has been turned on by the fans?
At Survivor Series, a team of RAW wrestlers will face a team of SmackDown! wrestlers in a five-to-a-team elimination tag match. Who will come out on top, and do you think the teams are evenly matched? Also, assuming Batista is injured, who will take his place on the Survivor Series team? (My pick would probably be Matt Hardy).
Current RAW Team: Shawn Michaels, Big Show, Kane, Carlito and Chris Masters.
Current SmackDown! team: Batista, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio Jr, John 'Bradshaw' Layfield and Bobby Lashley.
As for other issues relating to TNA:
Going into Genesis with a six-man tag team match featuring Rhino and Team 3D (The Dudley Boyz) against NWA Champion Jeff Jarrett and NWA Tag Team champions America's Most Wanted, was there really any need for Rhino to win the NWA World Title at Bound for Glory, or alternatively, for Jarrett to take it back two weeks ago on iMPACT?
Will Jeff Hardy or Monty Brown become the Number 1 Contender to the World Title?
Are you looking forward to the Elimination X tag team match featuring Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, Alex Shelley, and Roderick Strong vs. Chris Sabin, Matt Bentley, Sonjay Dutt, and Austin Aries?
As mentioned earlier, what will Christian do?
Plenty to go on there!

Edit/ This just in...Eddie Guerrero is dead.

poor eddie :(
on a lighter note, i used to be a huge fan of wrestling (in secret at school though), but i don't watch it anymore due to not being able to get enough time with the sky remote (curse you disney channel, why must you put shit shows on that my sister enjoys)
however, last week i went out and bought a preowned copy of "here comes the pain" and haven't stopped playing it. wrestling games ftw

I suppose you could count wrestling as a proper sport, it has its own league, players and many people enjoy it over the world, including me. I think its great and ive been watching it for many a year, I was ficsated with it when I was little.

Same here. I was obsessed, now I'm more of a casual student if you will.
Eddie was due to win the World Heavyweight Championship tonight. My thoughts go out to his family.
Ditto as I was I a big WWE(WWF) Fan untill I started secondary :p
Very sad to hear about eddie, he truely was a credit to all that made the WWE what it was...
He will be greatly missed. :(
My thoughts are also with the Guerrero Family tonight.

I used to be a massive fan, then came secondary school. Now I'm lucky to see the PPVs. I still play the games though.
Anyway, I was shocked to see Eddie was so old. He was one of very few wrestlers who was successful without a gimmick. Such a shame.

Used to be a fan of wrestling but I don't like it anymore. I didn't have satellite tv for a while and I just stopped watching it. When I had sky again it was all weird and I didn't have a clue what was going on.
I still have the memories though of what it used to be.

I was a massive fan when I was younger and I still am. eddie was the best thing on the smackdown brand. WWE will not be able to replace him anytime soon. The best entertainer on smackdown is dead and I am so sad about this whole thing. I know it sounds stupid because I have never met the guy but I have watched him for years.

i just find it weird how it's changed so much from when i was watching it. eddie was a minor play who fought for the european, and sometimes intercontinental championships. he was in a group with benoit, malenko, and saturn who attacked mick foley and were then beaten up by kane. he then "went out" with chyna. And that's all i remember really.
I didn't even realise he had become number one contender or anything

I remember him from "Back in the day".

Wrestling has changed so much since then.
Yeah wrestling has changed so much and not much of it has been for the good. Theres so many things that have got worse, notably Stephanie McMahon controlling whats on TV every week. And because Triple H is screwing her (lucky bastard) he is the champ for 8 months out of 12. But i still love it.

Yeah, but to be fair to Eddie, he was always a class act; it was inevitable he would eventually become a challenger for the big one(s), displayed by his win of the WWE Championship in 2004.
And "H's threefold" seems to have learned in recent months that it's not always his ball to play with.
Of course, he will take it off Cena at Wrestlemania, methinks.

Tripper isnt the champ yet because he wants to beat the one man he idolises, Ric Flair. he wants to convince himself that he is better than Nitch but the truth is that Trips will never be in Ric's league. After he beats the Nature Boy the title will be his about 7 more tinmes. Once again getting one over on the nature boy. 17 time champ eh? How long until that happens? I say about 2 years.
I actually like Trips though but he is no Ric Flair.
WOOOOOOOOOO!
Dingbat
14-11-2005, 11:21 PM
I actually reckon Flair will come out the other end of this feud as the victor, you know; Hunter will lose nothing by being beaten by Flair, but Ric gets to show that he still has it, that he can still go and that he still is 'The Man'. Triple H will beat Ric Flair at Survivor Series but lose to him at the Royal Rumble or New Years' Revolution, perhaps winning the Rumble itself afterwards. Flair along the way will drop the IC title thanks to HHH-erference, but that's become just a secondary factor anyway.
Judging by how good the Cage match was, we have a lot to look forward to.

I'd just like to post here to pay my respects to Eddie Guerrero, he was one of my favourite wrestlers, I'll never forget the day I saw him live. It may have been a small show in Newcastle, but he put 110% in the night I saw him and I'll always respect him for that, he was a wrestler who obviously loved what he did and tried his hardest ever night he performed.
As you can tell I'm also a closet fan, I was shocked to read about this yesterday and still am, it hasn't really hit home yet.
Anyway, I no longer live at home so don't get to watch wrestling as much as I'd like any more (very annoyed to miss the tribute show today:(), I only really read off websites, www.lordsofpain.net seems to be a good one, they have all the regular rumours and the like, as well as quite detailed results.

Ahh, the memories of watching WCW on a friday night with my brother - The only night we were allowed to stay up late on.
Wrestling is probably the only sport I'd ever call myself a 'Fan' of, I find most other sports boring and pointless but even though it wasn't real, wrestling entertained me very much.
The fact that it isn't 'real' doesn't really matter imo, it still takes just as much dedication, fitness and skill to be a wrestler as needed to be a footballer or rugyby player.
They still have to keep in peak shape and do training like any other sportsman. It also requires acting talent which is quite rare in the sporting type.
I guess I kind of lost interest when it merged with the WWF though really, I never much liked the WWF as I did the WCW, although I did watch it occassionally and when they first merged it was incredibly exciting to watch.
My best memory is when the NWA Red ambushed Goldberg and spray painted him and electricuted him, that was awesome! Especially since I was only like 12. :D
I'm very sad to hear about Eddie though :( He was a great wrestler and a great entertainer, he didn't need silly costumes or anything, he was just excellent anyway. He will be greatly missed.
RIP Eddie Guerrero.

I haven't watched wrestling for a while, but it's sad to hear about Eddie Guerrero :( I have a few DVDs of WWE Pay per views (Backlash '04, which is amazing, despite the most predictable ending ever). I also have the Mick Foley 'Hits and misses' DVD, which is damn cool. Foley is god!.
ECW was cool, if only for the chants of 'you fucked up' and Joey Styles' (sp?) commentary. Oh and Terry Funk. Raven whacking Tommy Dreamer with a chair while Dreamer was handcuffed to a cage (may have been the other way round, cant remember) looked seriously painful, ECW also had possibly the funniest thing ever, When that tag team (was it Public Enemy or something?) got covered in chairs thrown by the crowd during a match against Cactus Jack and Mikey Whipwreck (speaking of whom, Cactus Jack once broke a Leonard Cohen album over his head).

Triple H will beat Ric Flair at Survivor Series but lose to him at the Royal Rumble or New Years' Revolution, perhaps winning the Rumble itself afterwards.
Ric Flair will not win the royal rumble. He is on WWE Tv to put young stars over and to fill space. Tripper has a long time future with the company as a performer and Ric doesnt. Ric will lose the feud to HHH no doubt about it. How will Trips be able to be a legitiamte champ when he cant beat a 55 year old man? I cant believe you would even consider that Flair would win the rumble!
Dingbat
15-11-2005, 04:22 PM
...No, I mean Triple H will win the Royal Rumble, not Flair
And do you honestly think the fans will care if Triple H can't beat a 55 year old man? It'll put Ric over as a genuine threat. All that the Game has to do is beat up Cena or something and he'll be considered legitimate again. If Flair loses this series, his career is over.
Cryomaniac; Joey Styles is now the voice of Raw is War if you're interested. They also held a one-off ECW PPV run by WWE: "ECW One Night Stand". I have the DVD and it is very faithful to the ECW legacy.

i wouldnt call myself a fan as much now as i used to be, i used to be huge on wrestling, my dad managed to get me tickets to a WCW pay per view, and i loved it, i remember canting "you fat bastard" at some generic for about an hour non stop, and the pyrotechnics(i think thats the word, fireworks and stuff) are even better live than on the box.

If Flair loses this series, his career is over.
Ric flair doesnt have a great wrestling career anymore. He is old and out of shape and does not have a long term future. He is only going to be used to put young people over. He will always be over with the fans because of his legacy, he doesnt need HHH to put him over because he will always be over. Just watch the end of the fued and see who comes out on top. I guarentee it wont be Flair.
Sorry for confusing confusion about Flair winning the rumble. Confuddled I be

Eddie's funeral took place in Scottsdale. Quite a few wrestlers attended including JBL and Konnan from NWA: TNA.
Friday Night SmackDown! last night featured more tributes to Eddie, but this week SmackDown! comes from Sheffield, England!
Up the road from me. :D

LIVE from Sheffield, United Kingdom
Hosts are Jerry Lawler, Joey Styles, & Johnathan Coachman
Right off team RAW walks out to the ring, followed by Eric Bischoff. Eric adresses the Smackdown! situation, but says that he hasn't seen any signs of Smackdown! showing up tonight. Grisham is on the watch outside just in case anything happens. Bischoff starts talking about his soldiers when Show interrupts. Big Show starts talking about Batista when JBL's limo pulls up. The Smackdown! team comes out, and Dave says that if team RAW had any guts they would come out to the parking lot right now. So, team RAW heads out.
Commercial break.
We return with team Smackdown! waiting outside. Team RAW finally comes out, and they begin to brawl. Bodies fly everywhere, as Masters hooks on the Master Lock on Mysterio. Batista gets Chokeslammed on a car as security seperates the two teams.
Commercial break.
Ric Flair vs. Trevor Murdoch
Lawler on Murdoch, "He's the only guy I know who can see his bottom lip without looking in the mirror." The two exchange offense, but Murdoch gets him down and drops the elbow for 2. Trevor kicks out of a Figure-four attempt, but Ric rolls him with some tights for the 3.
Afterwards, HHH appears on the tron and congratulates Ric on his victory. He says that he's going to show Flair something later tonight, and promises a victory Sunday.
Commercial break.
We return with Tajiri in the middle of the match when JBL runs in and clotheslines him and his competitor. He grabs the mic and calls out Chris Matsers to the ring. Eric comes out on the ramp, giving the fans a chance to chant "asshole". Bischoff says that since he wants a match tonight he will get one...with Shawn Michaels.
Commercial break.
Footage of Cena on MadTV.
Kurt Angle vs. Shelton Benjamin - Special Guest Referee Daivari
The "U Suck" chants are still being censored. Angle gets a side headlock takeover, and gets a shoulderblock to knock him down. Shelton gets a hiptoss and applies the armbar. Benjamin gets in some punches but runs into a belly to belly suplex. Backbreaker gets 2 for Kurt. Vertical suplex gets 2, twice. Shelton comes back and goes for the T-bone, but Angle reverses it into a vertical suplex attempt, which Shelton counters into a neckbreaker. Angle dodges a dragon whip, but Shelton lands on his feet on a german suplex and hits it for real. On to the apron, where Benjamin hits a DDT. Back in, Shelton goes for the T-bone, but Angle hooks on the ankle lock. Benjamin grabs the bottom rope, but Daivari won't break the move. Shelton counters it into an inside cradle, but Daivari rolls them over, allowing Kurt to pick up the quick 3.
Commercial break.
We return with Kurt still in the ring. Angle says that he and Daivari have both been abused by the people. Kurt says Daivari is a proud American, and that he is now his personal ref for every one of his matches. Cena appears on the tron, and apparently it's time to get superstars' opinion of Kurt. Cena accidently walks into the Diva's locker room, where he get flashed by Candice. John sees Snitsky giving a backrub to Tomko, and Gene says it isn't his fault. Cena then goes on to the Boogeyman. John settles for asking the fans instead, and they all chant for Cena. The crowd expresses their feelings on Kurt, being that he sucks, and Cena comes to the conclusion that Angle still sucks. John hops in the ring and the two brawl. John backdrops him out of the ring as we go to a:
Commercial break.
Triple H vs. Val Venis
Venis gets the punches and chops to start and sends HHH to the outside with a clothesline. HHH lays him out with a chair shot! The DQ is of course called.
Afterwards, HHH destroys Val with the chair and hits the Pedigree.
Backstage, Theodore Long is demanding to see Eric Bischoff.
Commercial break.
Candice Michelle vs. Mickie James
Joey announces that HBK vs JBL will be a Lumberjack match. A couple of masked guys run out and abduct Trish, allowing Victoria to kick James, giving Candice the win.
Commercial break.
Backstage, Trish is tied up. Mercury and Nitro are revealed to be the men behind the masks, and Melina challenges Trish to a match at Survivor Series for the Women's Championship.
Meanwhile, HBK plugs his book and tells JBL that he's going to find out what it's like to get RAW.
Commercial break.
Shawn Michaels vs. John "Bradshaw" Layfield - Lumberjack match
Shawn opens up on JBL, but JBL fights back. SCM is ducked by JBL, but he quickly goes back in . Michaels gets the boot and starts chopping. JBL gets a swinging neckbreaker and sends HBK into the corner. Michaels tries to fight back, but JBL gets some fingers in the eyes. Elbow is dropped by Bradshaw for 2. HBK gets some chops and goes for the cover, but John grabs the bottom rope. Sideslam gets 2 for JBL. Michaels goes up, but JBL gets him down and hits the shoulderblock for 2. HBK clotheslines both of them out, prompting the Smackdown! team to gain up on HBK. The RAW team makes the save as we go to a:
Commercial break.
We return with HBK getting a sunset flip for 2. Shawn gets an elbow to send him out, and the Smackdown! guys once again deal the beatings. JBL gets a couple of elbow for 2. Michaels keeps getting cheapshot, and John gets a vertical suplex for 2. Crowd chants "HBK", but Bradshaw hits the fallaway slam for 2. Michaels comes back with the forearm and goes to the top. The elbow is dropped, and HBK tunes up the band. JBL is saved by Smackdown! from eating the Sweet Chin Music, so Michaels goes over the top. Back in, Orton pushes Shawn off the top rope, but he ducks the Clothesline From Hell, and hits the Seet Chin Music. Orton comes in for the RKO and it's mass chaos. Batista runs out of nowhere with a lead pipe and hits a spinebuster on Show.
RAW results.

For those of you that watch wrestling I just want to say that Kid Kash is a fucking legend. This guy has so much talent and it wont be long before he's US Champ and it wont be long before he's put with some random big guy to make himself look tougher. With his talent and charisma he could be a major star in WWE if he is used properly.
Oh and Simon Dean for World Champ
Dingbat
05-01-2006, 10:06 PM
Can't see Kash or Dean getting much of a push in WWE, sadly; cruiserweights never really get the shots that they deserve. Kash's highest limit is probably where he is right now, with the Cruiserweight Title.
Simon Dean, meanwhile, has an interesting gimmick, and is ace; hey, it's Nova for God's sake! Unfortunately they're using him as comedy job fodder. :/

Right so cruiserweights cant go that far then? Ok then. So I take it Rey Mysterio isnt a cruiserweight then. You are right that whilst most cruiserweights cannot go that far because they are restricted by their size, cruiserweights with a character can go very far in their careers. It can be said that Eddie Guerrero was a cruiserweight as he was WCW cruiser champ. that also goes for Chris Jericho. And hey, they havent gone far at all now have they. Shawn Michaels isnt exactly a heavyweight but because he had a character and talent his size didnt matter much like with Guerrero and Jericho. CM Punk who should debut soon isnt a big guy either but he will be a star because of his in ring talent and his charisma. Kid Kash and Rey Mysterio are cruiserweights with characters and so they can and should go far. Im not saying the notorious K.I.D will be World champ but he could easily be the US Champ well for starters at least.
Oh and AJ Styles is a 3 time NWA champion and he's a cruiserweight/X-division wrestler.
And with Simon Dean, his charcater has always made me laugh and with Gymini (Shane Twins) joining him, the future looks right for Mr Dean.

I'm talking about in WWE... Rey-Rey hasn't won any titles higher than the Tag Team title despite being in the main event for years. AJ Styles is in a company that KNOWS HOW TO BOOK, not in WWE.
Mark my words. Kid Kash will never win the US Championship.
Guerrero and Jericho...sure, they were given the titles, but for how long? Not long enough and they only reigned once each. Jericho's was arguably bigger, I suppose.
Don't get me wrong, I want them to succeed...but statistically, you could only name three or four who succeeded in WWE compared to half the TNA roster.
In other news, Edge beat Cena last night with MITB. He is now the WWE Champion.
Im so happy that Cena isn't the wwe champion anymore. I hate him so much! I can't wait till the Royal Rumble...man. I had to pick between NYR and Royal Rumble, and I picked Royal Rumble. Best PPVs are SummerSlam, Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania.

Kid Kash Breaks Arm
WWE Cruiserweight champion Kid Kash did indeed break his arm due to a stiff kick from Tony Santarelli while working for WWE developmental territory Deep South Wrestling last Thursday. There were some who were hoping it was just a bad bruise but we've confirmed it was in fact a break. At the Smackdown house shows this weekend, they did a strange deal where the injury was announced and a match was held to crown a new Cruiserweight champion. The match then ended with a DQ, so Kash was ruled still Cruiserweight champion.
Can't see him even staying Cruiserweight champion with that.
TNA does know how to book, in AJ Styles' case. The X Division is always very well booked and entertaining. Apart from the hinderance of Jarrett keeping the title for himself like a baby, which will soon be sorted when Sting turns up and starts making demands, TNA's booking is still unanimously more sound than WWE's.
And calm down, lad. No need to try to use sweary words.
You really think that you know everything dont you. You really are a fucking axe-wound. Yes youre a axe-wound. A FUCKING axe-wound! With your point about TNA knowing how to book, thats bollocks. Anyway...spoilers for SmackDown this week are easily found on the WWE website. I'd suggest avoiding that if you don't want to find this out:
Batista relinquished the World Title because of injury. He maintained that he would be back to win it once his injuries had cleared up. What followed was a 20-man Battle Royale to crown a new champ. Kurt Angle was announced as the shocking 20th participant but was thrown out through an announce table by Mark Henry before the start. The match came down to Mysterio and Henry, with huge 'Eddie' chants. Henry eliminated Mysterio only for Angle to return, eliminate Henry and be crowned World Heavyweight Champion.
Shock news again from WWE.

The match came down to Mysterio and Henry, with huge 'Eddie' chants. Henry eliminated Mysterio only for Angle to return, eliminate Henry and be crowned World Heavyweight Champion.
Shock news again from WWE.

Herein lay childish ranting for which the poster was duly repped in a minus fashion.

WTF? Calm down, take a break from the internet or something.
If a message board discussing wrestling gets you this riled then you are heading to heart attack city on a bullet train in later life...
[edit] And what the fuck is with your profile? Homophobia is not condoned on here especially if it is displayed in such a negative way as you have.

So, not being a regular in this here section of the forum, I accidently came across this thread, and was surprised and amazed. Yeah I used to be a wrestling fan, WCW and WWF, those were the days etc etc, I remember alot of the "underdogs" of WCW and loved it all to bits, but stopped watching WWF in say...2001.
My mates are all still very much into it, and I'm getting back into it myself. I got a TNA PPV from september (um...it was bound for glory) and was amazed to see alongside some great new faces a hell of a lot of my old favourites mixed and paired up, such as K-Kwik and road dogg with konnan from WCW, jeff jarrett, sabu, rhyno, raven, the works, I absolutely love it.
Oh and I also got WWF royal rumble 2000, the classic where the rock wins but did his feet touch the ground etc etc. I just couldn't resist the pairing of JR and the king, with cries such as "ROCK BOTTOM, ROCK BOTTOM, ROCK BOTTOM" and "OH MY GOD, HE'S BUSTED WIDE OPEN".
Sport? maybe not. Entertaining? HELL YEAH

Interestingly, you stopped watching when I think most people did; 'WWF Attitude' ended and they started the fateful 'InVasion' storyline that they fucked up entirely. Since then there have been some good moments, but none as good as in the ol' days.

You've got that right. "ROCK BOTTOM, ROCK BOTTOM, ROCK BOTTOM" and "PUPPIES!!" as Digga said, was quite possibly the best part.
I was just remembering HHH vs. Cactus Jack in Hell in a Cell a good six years ago, damn that was a match.
"Cactus has got the two-by-four wrapped in barbed wire!"
*sigh*

I actaully stopped watching just after the invasion when the two shows got seperated. But now I want it back for some reason, and I can't (haven't got sky anymore)
Mick Foley is a legend and pretty close to being a hero of mine

I don't know if i like the new WWE much, they've screwed around with my favourite wrestler (kane) and it's just so different i dunno if i'll ever get used to it though. I'm lovin TNA though, is it televised in the uk? if so, what channel, cos i don't have the time/hard disk space to "acquire" it all really.

Well if you have Sky, it's on The Wrestling Channel these days. Soon to start airing up-to-date episodes as part of a new deal, too.
