Avast ye scurvey forum chaps :yarr:. I was watching news highlights of the late George Best's career. It was watching some of his amazing skill that I realised my pitiful knowledge of the world game extends little beyond the 1990's. After some consultation with my Dad he produced a video tape called the 'Greatest Football XI' or similar from a decade or so ago showing some British football analysts deciding on, as the title suggests, the world's Greatest ever XI. The film was mainly old and fuzzy, and I must admit the hairstyles of the players was almost as entertaining as the football itself, but the skill of the players was just, well, :ultra:

So basically I thought maybe this would prove entertaining in the form of a thread over at the weebls-stuff forums. The aim of the thread is determine the greatest ever football XI (including coaches) as voted by the weebl forumites. It would be determined by nominations from forumites, then a series of voting threads along the lines of 'Keeper' 'Strikers' 'Coach' etc. with a list compiled of the nominations for those categories with the most voted for players making the final line-up.

This thread serves the purpose basically of expressions of interest and, if there is enough interest, nominations. Simply list the player/coach and position and perhaps a comment on why you chose to nominate them e.g. Zinedine Zidane - Midfield: coz he's got mad skillz yeah

GK - Peter Schmeichel - Great all round goalkeeper.
CM - Ronaldinho - Best player ever. Consistantly does things out of the ordinary. Genius.
Manager - Bob Paisley - The trophies speak for themselves.

I'd say Shanks actually. Praise be to Bob, but Shanks will always be my most respected manager of all time.

CB- Emlyn Hughes - 2 European cups, 2 UEFA cups, 4 league titles, FA and League cups, and Englands best CB in the 70's. A true legend.

The manager has to be

Bill Shankly

because there has never been a better manager.

I would also like to nominate

Gordon Banks in goal.

George Weah: magical on the pitch, a gentleman off the pitch.
Karel Poborsky: criminally overlooked Czech player.

Dixie Dean- striker- Anyone who scores 6 goals a season HAS to be there*60 goals a season.

Franz Beckenbauer: Only person to have won the World Cup as player and manager. The driving force from midfiled that won Germany the 1974 World Cup. As Keir Radnedge wrote in Soccer: The Ultimate Encyclopedia: "He was the puppet master, standing back and pulling the strings which earned West Germany and Bayern Munich every major prize."
Ferenc Puskas: This man is Real Madrid's history. Only player to have scored 4 goals in the European Cup final. Also scored 83 goals in 84 caps for Hungary. Oddly capped 4 times by Spain. Hungarian captain when England were beaten 6-3 in their first loss on home soil.

Now for someone predictable.

George Best - Sure it's predictable, but he was pure class. Anyone who can get 7 goals in one match is awesome imo.

News from my grandad. I wasn't alive in the days of him, but my grandad said he did.
Must have been wrong.

Just for laughs, Gazza!

Just for being serious, we need some attacking power in the air in this team. Step forward John Toshack.

Good old Toshack. I base my game on him.
Can't believe some of the names that have been thrown in so far. We are talking the greatest ever XI...

Shanks and Paisley is a close call but I always preferred Bob. Must be my Geordie roots...

Cruyff, Kempes, Paulo Maldini, Zico, Marco Van Basten

To name but a few which have yet to be mentioned. Alessandro Del Piero?? DO ME A FAVOUR!

Exactly what I was thinking. He wouldn't even be in the top 10 forwards playing today. Let alone from the past.

Surprised Di Stefano hasn't been mentioned either. He is the best ever all round player and was arguably better than his Madrid teammate Puskas. Maradona and Pele both dropped from the scene at 30/31 but Di Stefano went on til his 40's and was the driving force behind Madrid's European Cup wins.

League - 218 goals in 282 games
Scored in 5 successive European Cup finals.

Streety... Ronaldinho best ever???

Anyway, Bobby Moore: Because people forget about defenders.

Although Maldini, Emlyn Hughes, and Beckenbauer have been mentioned.

Sorry, I didn't think to search :(

Anyway, Garrincha - Right wing. Not too many wings mentioned yet, and according to my Grandad in full flow he was the best player he'd ever seen.

Scored in 5 successive European Cup finals.I was going to mention him alongside Puskas but would have felt greedy as I already had 3. ¬_¬

Jarzinho! Second most influential player in the 1970 Brazil side.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge! Was the boss of the German side in the post-Beckenbauer era. Was a crying shame he lost in 2 World Cup finals running - but never mind, Germany lost! :)

Paolo Rossi! Suspended for three years following an alleged "fixing" scandal in 1980, which was shortened to two years. Good luck for Italy. His goals propelled them to the 1982 World Cup.

Bobby Charlton! The only United player I love more than George.

People forget about defenders.

Although Maldini, Emlyn Hughes, and Beckenbauer have been mentioned.Beckenbauer was a midfielder ¬_¬

I think that he is up there with Pele, Maradona and Di Stefano. We'll just have to see how the rest of his career pans out. The things that he does with the ball haven't been seen before. There are only a handful of players you can class as genius and he is one of them.

Need more defence, thus:
Franco Baresi, had an amazing ability to control the games pace, as well as read play exceptionally well.

Del Piero is past his best now, but remember him in his prime.Hardly set the World alight. I remember Keven Phillips had a few good seasons, but it doesn't mean he's worthy of inclusion to an all-time greats list.

Mike Basset for manager, methinks. ;)

Seriously though, glad to see Banks is included. The goal he saved against Pele was arguably the greatest save of all time. (you know which one I mean)

Hang on, who says it's only players from the past who are legends? We've only got Ronaldinho from today in there. Methinks our very own Steven Gerrard is easily good enough to be up there!

Oh, and Andre Schevchenko

Gerrard is a great player but he wouldn't get into an all time world XI. Graeme Souness was a better midfielder.

Shevchenko hasn't done it at International level so I don't think that he should be included. There are much better strikers than him... Di Stefano, Pele, Puskas...

Peter Schmeichel

I agree. He has been the best keeper I have seen. Better than Banks, Kahn, Zoff, Meier and Yashin.

I thought i posted him. Musn't have done.

Another Keeper.

Neville Southall - Awesome keeper. He can also still do it. (Celebs V Legends he had an awesome game) ( I also think the word awesome is awesome) ( I might over use the word awesome though)
