I've received a delightful series of emails today regardin Footy Badgers. You know... The toon I made over a year ago.
Ulstershaker wrote:
That is RACIST and very offensive! To describe Scotland as nothing but Haggis & Scotch Eggs, Wales as nothing but Sheep and Dirt and Ireland as nothing but Fighting is a disgrace.
Please remove it and offer an apology.

no.
it's not racist and you're missing the point.
Maurice Dickson wrote:
Despite having a doctorate maybe I'm just thick...explain to me how seeing badgers in England shirts and having those phrases isn't insulting to the Scots, Welsh or Irish....
Would you repeat the same toon with Badgers in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland kits and having the words "Mongrel Nation" across the piece of map where England should be?
Weebl wrote:
Not heard of irony then?
It's a pastiche of the bombastic songs and fans behaviour around such events. Of course if you take everything out of context and just want to accuse someone of racism (Scottish isn't a race. You must be confusing it with xenophobia what with your doctorate blocking your view :) )
Maurice Dickson wrote:
Yes, I've heard of Irony but that hasn't got an ounce of Irony about it....
You fail to explain just what "the pastiche" is. Looking at the website as my children do you'd be hard pressed to find an explanation or do you expect children to be able to understand your sense of Irony or go understand "the pastiche"?
I am quite aware that the Scots, Welsh and Irish are not races but I think you'll find that under the common law of this land that to display images such as those on your website would be considered offensive under the race relations act as it is illegal to denegrate "races" in this way.
I will forward the link on to the CRE and ask them for their opinion.

Lol, at least he has something relevant to say, instead of just bad-spelled insults. I don't agree with him, though. Myself, I'm part Irish, and my uncle's scottish, yet I see the irony and appreciate it, and I know plenty of others from those countries who do also. He just has a crappy sense of humour...

Surely if Scots, Welsh and Irish are not races, then the race relations act don't apply to them?

Complaining that the "English Mongrels" are being racist. Idiot ¬_¬
And he admits that Scots, Irish and Welsh are not races, then rants on about how what's on the toon is illegaly offending these races. ???
How would we live without these people? :p

I think that that's someone else, saying they aren't races.
Timmeh
31-01-2006, 06:09 AM
Um. OK.
If he wants to play it “legal”.
Now, you said in your flash cartoon that Wales contains sheep and dirt, Scotland contains haggis and scotch eggs while Ireland contains Guinness and fighting. Obviously, due to the size of the font you selected being fairly large and the map you chose to write on being fairly small, this is only a tiny portion of the things contained within these countries, but a good enough starting point.
Is he therefore denying that any of the above countries contain such things or even should be allowed to contain such things? I live in Wales, I can tell you most defiantly that it does contain both sheep and dirt. If need be, I can provide photographic evidence to back this up which I would be more than happy to pass on to the gentleman. I am, likewise, almost certain that Scotland contains haggis and; correct me if I’m wrong Scottish forumites, there's most probably one scotch egg going on there somewhere too. To the Irish forumites: has there ever been a fight in Ireland? Has there ever been any Guinness? Upon confirming that these things do indeed exist/ take place, I think it should be requested that he retract the statements in his e-mails and acknowledge that he was, by telling you that these things should not be on your cartoon attempting to revoke the basic human right of free action to the Welsh, Scottish and Irish. He is, in fact, quite clearly telling you that these things should be removed from these countries, thereby forbidding access to sheep and dirt/haggis and scotch eggs/fighting and Guinness to the respective nationalities.
I notice also how he also chose to target Scotland, Ireland and Wales but not England. This is a classic example of discrimination. While you made a comment of equal visibility and value that England contains ninjas and lasers, he chose not to comment on this. Does he deem that England should follow a different set of rules to everyone other country in the United Kingdom? That is blatant prejudice against a nationality which according to the 1976 racism act is illegal and this infringement is further strengthened by the 2000 and 2003 acts. As he brought up the CRE, maybe he’d like this quote directly from their website.
What is discrimination?
On grounds of nationality
“the requirement or condition cannot be justified on non-racial grounds.”
By his own definition, Mr. Maurice Dickson is a racist.
He also needs to realise that 1) doctorates do not make you clever, they make you someone who can learn something then repeat it with a tiny amount of researching a few things mixed in. 2) If he’s offended by that, maybe he should turn off his computer and go outside, he’d probably hear some political incorrectness that would cause him to die in horror.
There might even be some naughty words.
I wonder if that's how he settles all his arguements.

I'm being a racist again? I thought we'd already both agreed that Scottish isn't a race? Your complete lack of logic and circular arguments are displaying just how flaky the basis for your tiny minded rant is.
What exactly is your doctorate in? Being a hugely stuck up prig with an overbearing sense of self importance? How very very sad that you have such a need to wave it around to prove how mighty your intellect is in the opening sentence of an email. That's not pretentious in the slightest. Oh look I'm being sarcastic again. Well at least you seem to understand that. Clearly using such low humour is the best way of getting through to you.
Flame on you crazy diamond.
Go contact your racial equality society or whatever it was and see how they laugh you out of there.
"Oh noes! He said Scotland contains both Haggis and Scotch eggs! How very dare he. We have neither. And look England contains ninjas and lasers! This is clearly not to be taken with a huge heaping of salt at all."
Let's make this as clear for you as possible. Not every joke is aimed at children and yet most teens actually get the irony that you are so blind too. Just because you don't get it doesn't mean it isn't true. Nor do I have to write a huge thesis explaining my cartoons point for the ignorant (who probably wouldn't read it anyway and just get in a huge froth).
So to finish up. I don't care about how bunched up your panties are getting over a cartoon that was made over a year ago. You want to complain to some sort of authority then do so. You will get no joy from us as your inane bloviating is both baseless and boring.

if you look hard enough for racism you can find it anywhere.
most of the things people siad to be racist in the media usually have the effect on the particular racial group in question of "what the heck are they taking about, it isnt racist" and in my line of work I know people from a wide range of backgrounds..
I was born in Scotland and was brought up in England so Im between camps here. but my clan is Scottish and I feel a pull towards Scotland that Ive felt all my life. gets a bit awkward cos I ll shout for Scotland or England in matches so I always wondered where my loyalties lie.
Hell and England Vs Scotland game now I can see who I cheer for..

Exactly your point, I'm 5/8 scottish (3/8 English give or take 0.0000001/8 for irishness) and i found it hilarious, i have lived in England for all my life but i know where my roots are, it was a large font and a small map, i didn't see any japannese people complaining that it was them who had ninjas or any comic strip writer complaining about lazers or any Englishmen about the inaccuracy of the cartoon, i found it funny and this dude is just one idiot who i'd like to punch and his one opinion means NOTHING

Also Scottish, and don't find it offensive. God knows we do the same sort of thing up here if a miracle occurs and we actually qualify for something...
On a side note though, in law they can complain that it is racist - remember when Ann Robinson got investigated for insulting the Welsh? Nothing got done about it in the end, but it is indeed illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of being Scottish/Welsh/English/Irish, apparently. Though I think really what they meant was stopping people sacking folk, rather than a twat complaining about a badger animation
(Scottish isn't a race. You must be confusing it with xenophobia what with your doctorate blocking your view :) )
im sorry but that just made me laugh a bit too much.

is ten days considered a bump? dear God, i hope not! but i do believe if i was to find a toon offensive it wouldnt be this one. infact its like the least offenseive you could find.
1. There will always be people who, whether in jest or earnest, have offensive/negative things to say about certain groups of people
2. There will always be people absolutely looking to be offended
3. When 1 and 2 collide trouble brews
the only solution: If you don't like what someone is saying about this or that vote with your feet and have nothing to do with them. If they are up in your face saying it over and over that is harassment
cartoons are voluntary. and honestly.....there are so many crazy groups on the internet it makse me wonder why someone would single out a relatively mild-mannered cartoon for their lectures
