i seriously don't like them. Their songs are all the same, rappy verse bit by one bloke, and then that other bloke just shouts some random shit and claim's it's a chorus. NME say (and i agree) that they are for 15 year olds and under. Their new single is so...crap....that they deserve to have their vocal chords cut out by their mob of "grunger" (grunger my arse, nobody knows the meaning of the word anymore) fans.

god i HATE people who complain that music is too commerical for them. What the hell do you want, your band to split up because theyn't not being noticed and nobody's buying any of their records? Because most of the time its that, or being commercial. So shut the hell up about bands being too commercial for you, because you either become "commercial" and actually sell CDs in record shops, or you stay unknown and fizzle out.

linkin park is more commercial than other bands in this sense:

I think they are knowingly cultivating their teenage angst, which they themselves haven't felt for ten years.
They sing about topics they know will sell..

that's what I like about them... they pick the best sounds from different sources and manage to sell it world wide....
they are, speaking as a songwriter myself, very good in writing a catchy tune.

this all combined make them objectively one of the best bands around...

only thing is, there are thousands of bands I enjoy more, who are subjectively each the best band in the world

i think all of their songs are so predictable.
1- Classical/other non-metal loop at start
2- Loud guitars fade in
3- random yelling
4- suddenly quiets down for verse
5- rapped verse
6- loud, yelling chorus
7- ooh, lets name the song.... scars. or flesh.

A lot of people here seem keen on telling others that their liking linkin park is bad.

I like them, the music is simple, loud and chester has a good voice. Seeing as I'm not under 15, that kind of disproves that theory.

Having studied the Nu-Metal Genre academically i find Linkin Park extremly formulalic. Which is great if you what music that "does what it says on the tin" with every recording.

Personally i dont listen to them in my own time. I did however like their first single and i do own "Hybrid Theory".

The issuse with not liking bands because they have become too comercial or have "sold out" is often viewed from the wrong perspective.

It is the effects that the procces of comericialisation and "selling out" have on the music we should consider.

I dont like some bands because they are too formulaic and their sound is far too overproduced. These are products of commericalisation. The band has been marketed to a certain sound and the music has been produced in a certain way. My ear prefers recording that are a bit dirtier than the sounds most major label recordings turn out.

When you decide you dont like a band because they have "sold out" think about what you actually mean. Are you jumping on a musical elitsist band wagon or are there actual reasons?

oh that's not me, I hate them with a passion. The most freakin' bland band ever, linkin park spares no expense to be unoriginal and just uncool. Mike Shinoda is the WORST rapper I have ever heard and completely ruins any chance they would have of being cool at all. They give nu-metal a bad name, they give rock music in general a bad name. Nu-metal is on the brink of death. Kerrang, who used to love nu-metal now hate it. I think they'll all move on to metalcore. Metalcore's kind of pretentious in the way that the bands try to sound intelligent, by having names like "When I Die Again" (it's made up).

I've got Hybrid Theory, and that's enough for me thanks. Reanimation (I think that's what it's called) looked pants and unoriginal toboot, and their new stuff can be quite samey.

They did some good tracks, with some original music in there too, but I wouldn't buy an album of theirs without listening (and liking) at least half the tracks, unlike David Gray, say, where I'll buy an album of his immediately if I see it (though I've a horrible feeling I've got them all now :( ).

ok so heres my views on linkin park.

1. hybrid theory- a good album in general, some damn good songs but a few were a bit tame
2.reanimation- overall ok. some really good remixes and others were just really really crap. the remix of my december was awesome
3. meteora-really put me off linkin park. for me it was a horrible crap album. listened to it twice and got sick of it.

so in general linkin park are OK. not amazing but not complete shite ether

My studies of Nu-Metal were for my undergraduate dissertation (part of my degree) at university.

It was a 12,000 word dissertation titled:

"How does the Form, Structure and Materiality of Nu-Metal Music affect the Social Practices of it's Fans."

It used mosh pits in nightclubs that play rock music as a case study and used Papa Roach "Last Resort" as an example of the genre.

My view on LP;

I've got Hybrid Theory coz, to me, it kicked ass. Reanimated i thought was a cheap rip off HT with only one or two good remixes on it ("Crawling" remix was quite good), but on other tracks it tried to intergrate rapping with nu-metal (which i don't think has worked). As for Meteora, there are some okay tracks, but "Somewhere I Belong" is the best one on there (i think)

Chester does have a good voice, but he's got 3 modes for his voice:

1) Shouts - boring after a while
2) Trys his best to sing high, but succeeds in sounding like his voice hasn't properly broken
3) Sings - this is the mode where he sounds quite good and respectable

Their repetitiveness makes them quite boring. However I still hold a liking to "one step closer" the only standout for any reason on hybrid theory (could it be that mike has a minimal role?). The thing about them is though, they have such a large fanbase they need not venture out creatively for the sake of sucess. Although I do hope the band finds new ways of doing things the next time around, just to save their name a bit. And part of what makes the band so accessible is the horrible rap, teeny girlies think that is cool because they can't stomach real rap-core (hed PE anyone?) and are hooked on eminem anyways. It's a happy medium.

may i suggest that any linkin park fans out there go out and buy themselves a proper metal cd. y'know, some slayer, or (early) metallica, or SOAD, or rage, or maiden. real bands don't sing about failed relationships. we want proper topics like war and death and politics and prostitutes and vampirism and werewolves and nightmares and freaks and insanity!

they are the archetypal nu-metal band. they have whiney vocals, repetative chords, and a vast deficit of guitar solos. the rapping is shoddy (i don't like rap, but i like this less), the singing is mediocre, their music is totally predictable; as i read earlier in this thread, "it does exactly what it says on the tin". just about the only thing they have going for them is that they play their own instruments. they do play their own instruments, don't they?

i know, not an original thought in all of that. what do you expect? there's only so much that can be said on a band like them.
