Hi all I am looking to upgrade my PC and was wondering if you could help with some parts... I will be using my PC for gaming and internet downloading.

Which CPU and Motherboard would be suitable Intel or AMD and what spec should I go for ?

Memory will I be requiring 1 or 2GB memory ?

and Which graphics would be good for gaming ?

Budget is about £250-300 for only these items.

Thanks.

Hope this helps a little

Decent motherboard atleast £40
Processor (based on 3ghz) - Celeron : £85
P4 630 : £125
DDR Memory (Crucial PC3200 DDR400) - £60 a Gigabyte
ATI Radeon Graphics card 9550 series - £50

So Celeron with 1 gig ram total would be about: £235

Pentium 4 with 1 gig ram total would be about: £275

Also note that both the Celeron and Pentium 4 have 64bit support and are both as good as each other.

What are your specs at the moment? For gaming you'd be better off with an A64 and depending on your current specs you might be able to get away with a 3500+.

If it's for gaming, an AMD processor would be better than a P4, also, if you want to save yourself the trouble of ugrading the mobo at a later date, go for PCI-E instead of AGP.

Motherboard - £40.99 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17006780614&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=100515)

Processor (AMD Athlon 64 3200+) - £106.37 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=88109)

Graphics card (nVidia 6600GT 128Mb) - £76.99 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=94363)

RAM (1GB Crucial) - £58.33 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=65719)

All in all: £287.96 (inc. VAT + p&p)

This is probably your best bet, the CPU is good for gaming and overclocking, the Graphics card is a good, un-expensive card, you have enough RAM and space to upgrade if you want. It's also a flexible mobo if you want to upgrade anything later.

Hope this helps! :eng101:

I would try and go for an AMD 3000 or higher, they're great for gaming and most other applications aswell (plus they don't run hot :p)

Also try and get 1GB RAM, you can definitely tell the difference over 512 !

And for a graphics card i'd say an X800GT0 which retail for about the same as 6600GT's but i think they're slightly better.

Maybe try searching for eBay to save some money ?

if you need information on computers visit:http://www.weebls-stuff.com/wab/upgrade-pt2/ by the way, broadband is a very very good thing to get, weebl and bob is so much faster downloading with it, it used to take ages!

Erm, this thread should be in the general Techy Bollocks section. I'm sure a kind mod will be along shortly to move it.

Thanks for all the replies :)

Ok I am going to leave my mobo and CPU at the mo (I was thinking about changing it as i said earlier because its a s478) but its 3.2GHz so I will leave it for now.

Ok sirch - thanks I am going to stay with my P4 now :)

Lewigi - My current specs are 3.2GHz P4 HT (s478), I have only currently got a nVidia FX5500 very poor i think/ I had a better one but it got damaged. and the memory is 1G would I be better with 2GB as its PC2700 :( ? How can you check what the max memory is from the pc ? as I dont know the type of mobo

I do already have Broadband :)

and flapjackboy... I did accidetally put this here (I must have read the reviews and posted without realising i was in the wrong section) I am sure though if its got to be moved a mod will do it :)

Thanks all -

EDIT: also could you tell me what would be a suitable keyboard + mouse ? for gaming ?

:)

If you want additional specs on your computer then try SiSoft Sandra (http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=&location=downandbuy&langx=en&a=), it gives you a lot of info, even if it doesn't show you maximum RAM then just google your motherboard and see what turns up, it should be no less than 2GB though.

2GB is obviousley better than 1GB, but remember that it'll only run as fast as your slowest stick, so if you have PC2700 and buy a PC3200, then it'll run at PC2700 speed.

Yeah, your CPU'll be fine at that I should think...

Graphics-wise, I'm not too well read on that card, but it's AGP, yeah? So if you want to upgrade then maybe an ATI X700?

Waits for someone to shout and say I'm dumb...

Thanks Private Bob that program you directed me to has told me the max memory I ca upgrade to (2GB) So for now I will upgrade the memory to 2GB, I am going to wither buy a thermaltake case or a 'Hipoint' one which has 4,300 air holes and neon cooling fans. And I am going to buy wither a ATI x700 or x850.

Thanks for all your help If you have any other input please reply :)
