View Full Version : What makes life worth living?

Well, there's a ranting thread and I've posted in that enough times, so in a futile attempt to look like something other than a miserable old scrote I thought I'd slap a thread up to balance out all that vitriol.

Let's hear about the nice things for a change. The simple little pleasures in life that make existence a bit more bearable?

I'll get the ball rolling: Clean, dry feet and a pair of clean socks. Nothing on earth like it. Sure, it's hardly the definition of comfort or luxury, but I always feel better for having them.

What about the rest of you?

The hours between 4 and 6 in the morning, in your room. Playing Timesplitters, and the sky outside is vaguely blueish purple. You sit down in your yellow plastic swivel chair and realise that everything is good in the world.

At the moment for me it's that feeling I get when I'm writing or drawing and I suddenly get a great idea or something turns out exactly how I want it. Doesn't happen very often though.

To avoid the obvious talks of girlfriend I'll add one that's universal to everyone..

The smell of rain on the ground after it's been hot.

mooatr
02-04-2006, 01:33 PM
The scene is this:
It's raining outside, and outside people are mumbling about how it's raining, and I am in a tent, in a comfy dry sleeping bag, in the knowledge that I have no obligations at all. Companions not necessary.

I have longed for that twice since the start of the year, and I have to wait until summer before GV06 (If you're in the know, you're in the know).

Yesterday I took the SAT, a standardized test which has monopolized my every thought for weeks. The test finished around 12:30, and I walked outside to 70 degree weather, the warmest we've had all year.

For me, this basically means my freedom; I have very few responsobiliities for the next few months. So a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders, the spring day beckoned, and I felt great.

Probably the most enjoyable feeling is when you know you have to do something but you are dreading it and then it being called off.

Also you get a similar feeling when you are in bed and you have to do a job of some sort and are just sitting there so relaxed but trying to convince yourself to go when you find out you don't have to do it.

gobby chav girl: "people with legs as fat as you shouldn't wear skirts that short!"
me: "people with faces as ugly as yours shouldn't leave the house without a paper bag over their heads, so what's your excuse?"

all her friends laughed at her so she just swore a little and stomped off. incidentally, my skirt was only just above my knee, hardly a mini-skirt.

Watching a fireworks display in another country, preferably one with a common tongue different to your own. The same could go for any other celebration at night, I suppose, but it's most apparent with fireworks. Everyone is feeling the same as you, but you can't understand exactly what they're saying. You're part of the group, yet at the same time totally isolated by the language barrier. It's quite profound, but you have the best feeling inside of you.

There are too many songs that make you feel better to listen to them all but at the moment i seem to have fixations with the following:
1. Embrace - Gravity
2. Blur - Coffee and TV (that milk carton makes me laugh)
3. Sum 41 - Noots
4. Embrace - Looking as you are

Tho like i say there are loads more ;)

doing something spontaneous. last night i came back from a trip to london to see some people from uni. the trip was organised for wednesday and i didn't decide to go until about 10pm on tuesday! we went shopping in camden, but i didn't really know any of the people really well, so it was cool to get to know them as well. making new friends is always good. :D

The effect fear and adreniline have upon yourself. I love those moments. Under circumstances where one feels intense fear they experience an immense adrenaline rush, and then be able to accomplish something that they didn't know they could.

Adreniline is one of lifes natural and most powerful and wonderful drugs.

Girls are good too. Love love love.

i love putting on my underwear, when they have come straight out of the tumble dryer.
Quoted for truth.
Seeing my girlfriend ria who unfortunately lives in Alresford [a lovely place, but I live in London]
When everyone has left the house and I can just muck about and improvise on the piano really loud.
Listening to an amazing album the 4th or 5th time, when you are familiar with the lyrics but it still has little nuances you've yet to discover so it can still wow you.
Lunch with all of my friends.
The fact that I have to go back to Japan and Kenya some day.
Skiing.
Things that make me laugh.
Long walks-this is quite odd, but I get an immense sense of achievement when I complete a long walk/hike.
My French Grandma's house [I'm half french] in burgundy in the snow.
Cousins.
Thinking about something in a way you've never thought about it before. Philosophical discussions with my mates falls in to the same category, assuming they don't become too heated or happen too often when they get a bit tiring.
Good food.
My brother who has been my best friend for all of my life. Best. Person. Ever.
And finally I've yet to experience so much I want to do!

I could go on for a long time here so I think I should stop now, I may make more posts later if I've forogotten something major. If you bothered to read this post, thank you, it was really enjoyabole to write.

Lying in bed with each other talking about the most random stuff then looking at each other and laughing. Listening to his heart beat.

Like a lot of other people have said, love makes life worth living. It makes you feel all special knowing that someone cares for you more than anything in the world - and it's a helluva feeling. For me, my girlfriend makes life worth living.

When I was a young, I used to believe that there was an afterlife, and that there was some higher purpose to life. Then I realised there wasn't and knew that absolutely everything is pointless beacause the future may not exist and you could die in a few seconds, and eventually everyone would die so everything is therefore pointless.
I still believe that, but now I know that the very present and the probable future are not - so you must try and get the most out of life as possible, and get as many experiences out of it as you can. Therefore, experiencing life itself is what makes life worth living. Even if your liife is bad, at least it's better than nothing. You only live once, so you should make the most of it.

I just spent a week in Madeira and went on numerous walks, I would highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys walks and views. From the peaks the views are fantastic and the landscape is just stunning generally. The terrain isn't particularly strenuous so if you are looking for a challenge look elsewhere.

Memories.

I have so little to do but think now, what with life becoming a blur of alcohol, depression, and disappointing myself and everyone around me...

Just like in the absolute pinnacle of the movie American Beauty, after he's been shot and is reliving all the moments from his past... the car, his wife on the apartment roof, his childhood.

I remember sitting on my porch, smoking a cigarette with the woman i love, watching the ever-shifting sheet of rain falling just inches from my outstretched toes, the occasional droplet wetting my foot. So dark the only real illumination coming from the cherry of the Lucky Strike between my fingers, lighting the water, my hand, the crummy wood of the balcony... Not to sound too emo or melodramatic, but times like that make me wish i could just fade away, just evanesce into the past, slip into the memory and never return, all time passing by in the mere instant when the cigarette brightened as i inhaled, hearing the gentle crackle of the ember stretch out through centuries. or when i recieved my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor at the end of bootcamp to that haunting melody from Black Hawk Down (Leave No Man Behind, i believe it is called.) or the last time i saw my dog. or the last time i cut myself.

or the last time that i did something right.

yeah, memories and imminent demise are about all i have to look forward to.

so bring 'em on, i say. one right after the next, right after the first.

Anything that contains ginger. I love the stuff. Local fancey-foods shop has crystallised ginger on special offer; two 500g bags for £4. Which is a lot of ginger. Sainsburys has brought out a new ginger beer that doesn't contain the sorts of additives that make your mouth taste like an ICI laboratory. And they also make cheap ginger nut biscuits. I love the stuff.
