So, uni's starting soon and me and some friends have decided to move out and get our own flat up in Glasgow. There are 4 of us all in and we'll be working part time. Anyway, my main reason for starting this thread is to ask for advice, where are good places for a group of students to move to? We're all going to Glasgow uni, but the underground goes near enough straight there so anyway, does anyone have any advice for where to stay/not to stay?

Thankies.

Well I'm living up in uni residences in the North West of the city and it's great, the west end is a great area, there are loads of supermarets close by and it's very close to the uni and therefore the union, also Hillhead subway station is there if you do want to go into the city centre. the only drawback is that places can be a bit expensive around here as there is a high demand for flats, but that is just as true in the city centre.

There are a few forumites who live in Glasgow and I'm sure one of them will be able to give you better advice than me.

Well thanks. We did go into a few estate agents a couple of weeks ago. Somewhere recommended some flats in Otago street I think. Would it be easier d'you think to get uni residences? Are there any drawbacks to them?

I had absolutely no idea where Otago street was, but now I do (<3 Google local). I've never been down there so I've no idea what the area's like.

As for uni residences, I'm moving back into mine next year as it's fantastic, well Murano Street is anyway. (I feel like I've said this too many times on this forum.) You have pretty much everything you need provided, there's a Tescos in spitting distance, there are buses every fifteen minutes to the city centre, and the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. nearly all the mates I've made this year have been through my halls and not my course and if i had moved into a flat and not halls I would be having a way worse time, but that's just me I suppose.

The drawbacks are I suppose that you are moving in with strangers and there are some assholes out there and you don't want to have to live with someone you hate for nine months, do you? A thing to bear in mind is all the residences are non-smoknig and have smoke alarms fitted in the bedrooms so if you do smoke you have to go outside or you can just do it out the window, but security will come and bitch at you if they catch you. Also our flat has been repremmanded for excessive noise by security on a few occasions but I reckon you'd get the same problem at any private flats due to neighbours, landlords and the like.

...roomies are a mixed lot. some can really get on your nerves. mine does, but i don't say it often 'cuz we're related and i'd hate to make things more awkward with my family than i already have by moving away from the rest of 'em.

will only have to put up with it a few more months though.
