I've downloaded the 30 day Fireworks trial before and I found it a good program to use.

Fireworks is just the Macromedia program to use for slicing images for the web. It is the equivilent of Adobe ImageReady.

You can do the basic things in there like cropping etc but for high end grapgics use PSP or Photoshop.

Btw, it would look much better if you used arial as the font. The concept isn't bad, so stick with it! :)

I recommend flash MX, very good program to use, if you've ever used paint you won't find the jump to much.
Also I like the picture.

I'd go with flash 8, it is superior
and has more filters etc.
Infact i'm using it right now :D

Older flashs are cheaper though.

Streety you of all people here should know Fireworks 8 is a more than capable program to use for making fan art. It is all I use for my actual graphic design, then I use Flash 8 to animate it (like my latest work).

I made this completely in Fireworks:

Filters you say?:

If you have played Doom 3 you will recognize this from Delta Labs 4:

(the one on the left is mine, the screen shot of the game is the right)

So please do not tell me you can only use Fireworks for cropping images. Macromedia Fireworks 8 is meant to be the competitor for Photoshop, while Flash 8 is targted torwards web development and animation/mulitmeda. Yes you can use it for graphic design/fan art, plenty of people have shown this here, but its main purpose wasn't meant to be graphic design.

I know you can do amazing things with it but it seems like a watered down version of Photoshop. That is why I compared it to ImageReady. There are filters and effects that you can apply and all the vector based drawing tools you will find in most applications.

Everyone prefers different software packages to draw in. I am most comfortable in Illustrator and then exporting to Photoshop though lots of people create images in Flash.

Download the trials of a few packages and see what you are comfortable in. If you can afford Studio 8 then get it. It is very cheap with a student discount.

PS. Lovely truck :)
