Argh. OK this is rather confusing.

My sister's PC has decided it won't budge from these settings. Apparently she was playing the sims 2, it froze, she turned the PC off and when it turned back on it was like this.

The hardware manager says that the card "can't find enough free resources" - I'm not entirely sure what this means, but I've disabled various things to no avail - it also does this in safe mode. I've tried older drivers too, and I'm continually rolling back, so we'll see.

The only thing I've discovered through google is that it's a problem that isn't uncommon with nVidia cards running on non-nVidia boards, and it's something to do witht he AGP GART driver.

I may try an XP repair install. hmm.

A lesser man than I would probably say "owned,"

As the official drastic situation guy, as a last resort you could backup all your data and reformat C: to see if that helps.

But that's my solution to everything.

I am no expert at all in this, so this is just a random suggestion - one thing you could try is booting in a different operating system to see if it's Windows that's at fault - have you got any Linux LiveCDs you could use?

I am aware that this is probably a useless suggestion, please don't laugh at me :p

If it says something about the AGP GART driver, maybe a driver update?

Edit: You tried a system restore? Could reset any changes to hardware...

Yes - First thing I did after I posted the thread. Ubuntu Live CD worked fine. I'm doing a repair XP install, so far so good, it asked for a CD for an AGP driver so that suggests that somehow the AGP GART got uninstalled.
