Hi all I need a new MP3 player but am a bit confused about all the choice.

I had a iPod 5G last year which became faulty so I sent it back. But now my unbranded Mp3 player has broke (after a good 2 years) and I need advice on what to get.

I am looking ideally for 2GB + video unnecessary

Any help would be appreciated looking to spend less than £200 (for unit only)

thanks :)

You can raise your standards to at least 5 or 6GB for £200

2gb SumVision mp3 player from Big Pockets (http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?lang=&submenu=&menu=&product_id=7534&session=4bdfd91623854583071340c455242af6)
Found that just now, dunno about the mp3 player but it is a good site!

Sony NW-A3000 (http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=3TQC&CategorySelectedId=11212&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11212,50417&InMerch=1)

Provided you don't use the bundled software, they are excellent mp3 players. If you're not botherd with photo, video or iTunes compatability, they are better than iPods, I'd say. 6GB model available for £140.

I got one of the 20gb versions for christmas for £175 off amazon, It works well but I'd say it is disapointing if that is better than an iPod.

I'd recommend and iriver. Not afflicted with ipod (a common mistake) it has all the properties of an ipod, but is a lot more reliable, faster and easy to use. And pretty much indrestructible too. I dropped mine down some steps, its still fine. My friend dropped his ipod, and it smashed into lots of little tiny bits.

I'd get a H10. I've got the 6gb, because it has a radio in it, which I use a lot.

Looks good too (in my color):

I got my 6gb for £150, you could get a 5gb (lowest space they have, except the 1gb.) for much cheaper, especially if you got just a pure (color has radio, pure doesn't. Nothing to do with color at all.). I'd say it'd probably be £100 to £120. Or less.

Ok. for the 5gb pure, it was £115 on the site. You can probably get it cheaper if you search the internet for one.

Build quality is much of a muchness on all of these things. Most mp3 players are pretty unreliable, still resonably new technology I suppose. I've fallen all over my iPod, dropped it onto concrete, stood on it etc and it works alright...though it needs a new battery, you can buy those easily and replace it yourself.

Though I would recommend those Sony ones. They look nice and they playback music bloody well and that's all most people want in an mp3 player. They're nicely priced too, it's just the software is shit and it can be hard to see the screen in bright conditions. I have used them, a few of my mates have got them, and I'm very impressed, despite generally not trusting Sony as a company.

My brother has had no end of trouble with his sony software.

And thts why irivers are so good. They work off WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER!

Meaning they are so easy to use. Unless you have an apple.

I think my Windows media Player is corrupted, because no matter how many times I update/install it, the videos are all fuzzy etc, with like the same picture (Badly done) 3 times across the screen. Would this matter for the quality of an iRiver?

I myself dont own an mp3 player, but my friend had an ipod. Its been back to apple 3 times already, once for a repair, then a replacement, then another repair, and now hes got it back and its still faulty. And i dont like itunes. So i say dont get an ipod, you will be different from everyone else too :) (IMO)

@tehmoogles: Try downloading WMP10 again from M$ website and reinstall it. And i dont think that would affect the iriver unless its a stuffed video

My brother has had no end of trouble with his sony software.Solution: don't use the software and just drag and drop files onto the player. You can do that with a Mac too.

I seriously dont get all the ipod bashing that goes on on these forums. Apple make feking awesome mp3 players. My ipod is a 3rd gen and is around 2 and a bit years old. I did have to change the battery myself a couple of months back, but it still works fine. Its been dropped more times than i care to remember and apart from a few scratches, it still plays on. itunes is a decent music program (especially around college with mytunes but :ssh: )

Another company you should look at is Frontier Labs (http://www.frontierlabs.com/). Go there and check out some of their players. The Nex black is 4 gb and $140 plus shipping. Or the 2gb Nex 3+ is absolutly tiny and only around $160 dollars. Worth a looksie anyways.

I have an iRiver h120 something (no i don't mean h10), it is beefy and box-like but it has lasted me a good 4 years without any problems.
The only attraction i think apple have with the iPod is how they have made iTunes (the mp4 buisiness) uncompatible with other jukebox devices. In my opinion iPods fail in all other respects.

As far as my opinion with sony, they bring out some really good MP3 players, but as soon as they have done so, they bring out another one, and discontinue the stock of accessories and players themselves of the last one.

Hope that makes some kind of sense, i can't be bothered to make sure.

Also consider the Creative Zen Micro (http://uk.europe.creative.com/shop/product.asp?category=10&subcategory=30&product=921&) (6gb) or, for £20 more, the Zen Micro Photo (http://uk.europe.creative.com/shop/product.asp?category=10&subcategory=30&product=1080&) (8gb).
