Basically my new pc runs great apart from when I try and play half life 2 (havn't tried any other games yet, apart from max payne which didnt work either).
After 2/3 minutes of gameplay the game starts stuttering and eventualy restarts the pc.
I have a Geforce 6200 LE Turbo Cache and have updated to the latest drivers. before I updated it wouldnt even get passed the game intro before I got the blue screen of death reporting something about the nv4disp.dll

Anyone else have the same problems or know any way of fixing it?

The two minutes of gameplay isn't smooth and there's tearing emiting from the crosshair. I've turned the details to medium and resolution down to 800x600.

I really didn't think it would have a problem what with being a brand new pc and it's driving me nuts. I just wanna play half life two :(

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Jeez half life 2 causes so many problems these days...it happened to me a couple times, but being the persistent bastard I am, I kept at it until it eventually stopped when I uninstalled Windows XP Service Pack 2. Don't know what it is, it might just have had a problem with that file. Do you have that installed?

I think it came with it installed yeah.
how do you go about removing it and what does it contain or do?

Right, I'm looking into that right now. Okay, I've written a step by step guide on how to get rid of it.
1.) Right, you know how to get onto Add/Remove programs? If you don't, it's in control panel. Go to that.
2.) Now scroll down to somewhere near the bottom, where you'll find a file called "Windows XP Service Pack 2".
3.) Click "Remove" BUT READ THIS BEFORE YOU DO:
---If you read the pop-up window that will come up, that will say "the following programs may not function correctly if service pack 2 is uninstalled", ONLY uninstall it if you're sure you don't need those programs (haven't checked out what happens when you uninstall it for the second time) - so don't unless you're absolutely sure.
4.) Try running half life 2 again.

Like I said if you're not sure, don't do it, as I didn't have things like MSN Messenger 7.5 installed when I uninstalled it the first time. See how it goes if you're sure.

Adam

P.S - Could someone possibly check out what happens if you uninstall it when MSN Messenger is on? Thanks.

PPS - If you don't want to risk it, ask some of the incredibly experienced and techy dudes about it.

A 6200 should be able to run HL2 at low resolution.

Tried running it at 640x480?

Also, how much RAM does your computer have?

The site I'm reading from tested it on a computer with 1GB of RAM and 3.6GHz processor and said it works ok on up to 800x600.

Shit, I run Half Life 2 at 1024x768 at medium to high custom settings, with a Geforce 4 MX 440, 512Megs RAM and a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with an average of 35-45 FPS. lowest I've ever gotten was 26 or so.

Should I be worried at my good performance?

Add -dx_level 81 to the command line for your HL2 shortcut, this will force you computer to use the DIrectX 8.1 path, as opposed to the more demanding DX9, and this may produce improved performance as well.

No, you're just running in DirectX 7 mode, that's all. :)
