View Full Version : North or South? Ideas\Recruitment\Questions thread

Please read this even if you are not British, you could still help us out.
So the debate has long raged, which is better? North or South? My esteemed fellow forumite Mr WhiteTotem would have you believe North is best whilst I am of the opposite opinion.
“Well how can we settle this argument?” he says.
“TO THE FORUMS!” I cry.
And so here we are, this thread is going to decide once and for all whether those northern miners are better or us southern bankers (not rhyming slang ¬_¬) in order to do this myself and WT shall set a challenge on a regular basis (regular basis yet to be defined, possibly once a week) and the teams of North and South shall have to fulfil these tasks and we shall judge the entries and award points to the best. The tasks will vary between the skills and knowledge required to fulfil each task and equally the tasks will vary in the amount of people required to complete each task.
For example the majority of the tasks are likely to require just one entrant from each side meaning the team would have to sort between themselves who is nominated to do the task. However other times the task will need say 3 or more entrants from each side and on occasion there will be tasks that all team members must compete in.
The tasks will be judged upon how well you complete them as well as how funny you make them should the contest be something along the lines of article writing, we are looking to have a good laugh with this thread and to not be too serious about it.
Currently we are looking to see what sort of interest there is in competing in this competition so we can sort out some more specific details. (We don’t want to plot out 20 tasks and a massive operation only to have this thread fall flat on its arse due to no interest)
So post below if you are interested in competing (this in no way binds you to competing but please only post if you are serious about it.) We also require an impartial judge or maybe more than one impartial judge, myself and WT haven’t decided upon what our exact role will be in this competition beyond setting tasks but clearly we would be biased judges so we may need a non-Brit to judge for us or decide in times when there is a tie.
So if you are interested in participating or judging please post below stating what you wish to do (no Brits applying to be judges please, we can’t take you on due to possible bias) please state whether you wish to be in the South or the North team as it will not always be clear based upon your location and even if it is just to make sure we'd like you to state which it is. Ireland is included and to help you decide if you are in the North or the South here is a handy diagram:
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/2989/linegoeswhereog3.gif (http://imageshack.us)
If you are on the line then decide for yourself or back the team with the least supporters at the time.
The line is temporary to create a rough 50\50 split of the country, it is likely to be moved later once we have an idea of how many participants we have! So don't complain as it is a virtual certainty to change but it was necessary to give a rough idea! Any more complaints as of the time of this edit (11:20pm) will be getting minussed!
Please note this thread is still in it’s very early planning stage so ideas are welcome, please PM me or WhiteTotem on the forums, also we are on IRC in #cheesebin most of the time so you could stick your head in there and if we are on then PM us or stick us on MSN if you wish. Any ideas on how to improve or how best to run this are welcomed as at this stage there are many questions that even we haven’t got an answer for.
Having said that if you have a question please ask it in this thread and we will do our best to answer it for you or work on a possible solution.
Please note that whilst this thread bares similarities to Forum Wars it is different and will be far more spontaneous and less planned (which may or may not be a good thing) so don’t bother complaining about that.
So step forward, your half of the country is counting on you!

I actually like the sound of this.
I actually live on the line (or around it) but count myself as coming from Yorkshire (as most of my family do) so I'll back the North, as most of Yorkshire is actually (IRL) in the north.

I couldn't make it any lower or it'd be two thirds of the country vs a third due to Scotlands inclusion.
I know some of you will have a problem with this *cough*Hitpoint*cough* but get over it, it's just a laugh. and the line needs to be there to create a 50\50 ish split of Britain, if we have an abundance of players for one side then we will re-examine.
Irrelevant of whether you deem yourself to be Northern or Southern please go by where you are on the map.

Im sorry but I cant deal with the line. Liverpool is the generally regarded boundary of 'the north'. I am aware it is 2/3rds of the country then but bear in mind a good deal of the population is situated below Liverpool (London, Birmingham and environs, London feeder towns) so I think its fair.

New map used, again don't bother complaining if you don't like it (not that my saying that stopped you last time) as it may change again depending on interest and suchlike.
Again I want to make it clear this is in the very early planning stages and we need your ideas and suchlike, where the line is on the map is the least of our concerns at the moment so please read the whole of the opening post and keep your ideas coming in.

Pretty much - to me, you're all "the south". And "the north" to me would be Fort William / Aberdeen / Inverness areas.
I've never understood the English north / south obsession, but to balance out teams I will play for the north.

As soon as we've sorted out our impartial judge (and we may have someone up our sleeves for that) we'll finalise a few details and be on our way.
It will almost certainly be ready tomorrow so more details to follow then.
EDIT: Yeah him what posted above is the one we had up our sleeves. He was a tight fit mind.
EDIT2: This means that the next 24 hours (or however long it takes us to finalise the details) are all you have to sign up for your side, we will start with uneven sides if necessary but it would be nice if we could have an equal number on each side so one more for the South team if possible please.

methinks the line should be lower, say about where the bottom of the north west is... Also North ftw, we have dave spikey (his local is about 15 minute from me) and that bolton lad peter kay. (who has a house aboot 5 minute from me, even though he's never there)
North has to put up with a lot of southern steriotypes about us all living on farms or in cottages with horses and such, we just laugh it off though because most of the southerners aren't educated enough. :p
Paul12345
07-09-2006, 10:14 AM

Oh no you don't! We've had enough hassle, it's staying where it is thank you.
Also if you are applying to be in the North side then I'm afraid we can't let you in just yet, the North already has an extra player so we need some more for the South first, then we can let you in.
EDIT: Also smartie I've had a think about the issue you've raised and the only solution I've come up with so far is to add your captain onto MSN and send your entry to him in a text file. I'll keep thinking though and see if WT has any ideas later. If anyone else has a solution please let us know.

07-09-2006, 10:58 AM
Does WT have to be online when I send the file?
Other than that I'll e-mail it to him.
As I recall the last time I logged onto my MSN was about 10 months ago, as all I get is shit from arseholes because of my username, they think I'll just add them because some twat in a chat room has given my username to avoid giving their own, or people are just too damn stupid to type in the correct profile. No, anytime will be fine.
Other than that I'll e-mail it to him.
The simplest solutions are often the best, I would recommend everyone does this but be specific in the subject title. I can't speak for WT but my junk mail filter is set to exclusive so if I don't know what it is I'm gonna end up throwing it out.
EDIT: Stalefish is now on the Southern team, people will now be admitted to teams 2 at a time, one to each team and only after the challenge in progress at the time of application has been completed.

That's fine, the only reason we didn't start with a challenge similar to this is we knew some members would not want to put photos or videos of themselves on the site so we wanted to start with something simple that everyone could do. But since we still got very few entries we thought we'd try something very different to see if we got more entries.

I think I'll sit this out for a bit, until I know where I stand. Or until one side gains a clear advantage, whichever comes first.

Thank you to all those of you who have entered so far (which isn't many of you to be honest.)
I can't speak for WT but both the entries I've had have been absolutely top notch so give yourself a pat on the back CoX and Shane.
Those of you who haven't entered have until 7pm Thursday night if you wish to enter and the challenge (in case you've missed it) is here: http://forums.weebls-stuff.com/showpost.php?p=1363492&postcount=20

After the once more poor showing of only receiving two applicants for the latest challenge we'd like to throw the doors open to you lot to suggest what might be a good challenge and myself and WhiteTotem will take your ideas under consideration and stick up a new challenge in the next couple of days.
So ideas for the next challenge, go!

I liked the idea of an essay type challenge but missed out on the last one. That seemed like a good idea because it would allow for people to create at their own pace, 5 mins here or there, whereas videos and pictures take a little longer to set-up. Don't know if thats just my feeling or not.
Maybe paint competitions or something like that could also turn up at a later date.

Yeah. A paint related comp would be interesting... like draw a picture in MS Paint which sums up your half of the country or something.

Maybe it should be in any medium?
because I can't use paint for shit, and don't use any computer programmes to create art. I use something called a 'pencil'.... ;)

Well, I guess the medium doesn't matter, although I love Paint :)

I do agree with AP as I had no video facilities and due to being very busy missed the last essay.
