View Full Version : Plane Hits New York Building

A small plane has crashed into a building in New York City's Upper East Side, causing a serious fire.

Apparently the FBI say it is not terrorsit linked but it does look very serious regardless.

It is being covered on BBC News 24 and the fire seems to be contained on 2 floors of a 50 storey building. Is causing a lot of smoke and disruption in New York however.

Story will develop here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6042306.stm)

edit/ Now it seems the plane was a 4-seater.

i hesitated about responding to this thread...

but i had to, just to point out that an FBI investigation was unnecessary (fire and police combined can do just as good a job figuring out the cause); it could only have been done to remind people of the 'terrorist threat'. :p

I reckon the US Government will say it was flown by a North Korean and use it as an excuse to invade!
[/absurd conspiracy theorist]

Seriously though, I hope no bystanders was seriously hurt.

I wasn't sure if making this thread would fuel the "zomg we're under attack" feel of the story, but then I thought it deserved to be posted on its own newsworthy merit.

i'm amused at how the thing at the bottom of the article says "Are you near the scene of the crash?", and includes a box for Town and Country, anyway.

Bah, the local news showed a brief segment during the commercials played in between segments of LOST, but all they said is "There is a fire taking place in Manhattan since a plane crashed into a skyscraper!" and then went on to list the other headlines without giving us any further details. Quite annoying, considering I don't believe many westerners can hear the words Manhattan, plane, crash and skyscraper without thinking "Oh f*ck it's 9/11-2!" I tell you, it's a goodt thing we get CNN so that we could get some more info on the thingamabobber.

It's an accident.

Small fixed-wing aircraft. That's all we've heard on that.

2 fatalities reported so far. Only one is in the plane (THIS JUST IN THIS SECOND AS I WRITE). "There is the possibility that the other fatality went into the river." I just heard that on the TV as I'm typing.

And now they're just noting on the TV the people noticing it's the 11th, etc etc.

At least it was a just a four seater, it could have been alot worse with a proper commercial plane.

CNN so that we could get some more info on the thingamabobber. Biased info, of course.

It's a pity I don't get Fox News to see what their response is (probably even more over the top than even CNN).

I seem to remember a week or so after 9/11 a plane crashed into a building in Florida. Seems exactly the same sort of thing to me.

The plane is reported to be registered to Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle.

A member of the Yankees organization was on the plane.

Who it was has not been reported.

CNN says he was alone.

Not sure why it matters that much who the pilot was...

Bicycles are quite safe.
Also, if it was a terror attack, would the white house (or whatever...) go
ZOMG TERRORIESTS!!!!!!!!!!11
or would they cover it up?

Not saying it was or anything.

Big overreaction, if 9/11 had never happened we'd be talk about it for one day, wonder why the pilot was an idiot (assuming it wasn't a suicide and there was a lot of fog like I heard on the BBS) and then nothing.

So, what's the latest hockey/cricket/fooball score then?

According to Ali G, it's trains.
Utterly reliable source.

Well it was the local news.Well, they could at least have said "However, it's not 9/11-2!" ;)CNN so that we could get some more info on the thingamabobber.Biased info, of course.Yeah, I know, but I figured they probably couldn't spin this story to too great an extreme. I tend to flip through the different news networks and see what they agree on, and then label those tid-bits as pseudo-facts.It's a pity I don't get Fox News to see what their response is (probably even more over the top than even CNN).I do get FOX News, but I'm careful not to watch it too often. Sometimes I watch it for the sake of humor, but sometimes it just gets to be to much for me and I feel as though O'Reilly and co. are making me physically ill.

It really annoys me when something happens and it's instantly connected with terrorist attacks. Just because this happened a month after the anniversary of 9/11, it doesn't mean it is connected in anyway.

Surely it would be more productive to examine the case properly first before even mentioning a potential attack. When you tell a country that they may be the subject of a terrorist attack they will instantly begin to panic because that is the natural human reaction. It's all a matter of the government getting easy manipulation of said country.

Meh, I know you're all thinking similar, I just felt the need to write it all down and have a mini rant about the state of the media. :p

It's sad to hear this, but I'm just waiting to hear more details about it.

maybe Lidle committed suicide because the Yankees are out of the playoffs and he's upset about Joe Torre possibly being fired? seriously though, it had to be an accident, if he was trying to terrorize people wouldn't he do something a little more dramatic and destructive?

I heard the death total is 4, 2 in the plane and 2 in the building.

More likely pilot error. The pilot (or the player) lost control of the aircraft for some reason, when you look at how much space buildings make up in Manhatten, hitting one was highly likely. A tragic accident, but at least it shows the vigilance of the authorities - jets were scrambled over other major cities. Had it been real hundreds of lives could have been saved.

I think I heard eye witnesses saying the plane was doing loops and flying erratically before it crashed so it was either silly stunt making or technical error and the movement was result of attempted levelling.

Is it just me that sees cruel irony in the fact that one of those killed by the plane crash was a flying instructor

captain canuck
12-10-2006, 06:49 PM
i thought cnn decided it was just Liddel since there was no evidence (that they knew) of anyone but him in the plane at the time of the crash.

i suppose that changed.

The two killed were New York Yankees baseball pitcher Cory Lidle and his flying instructor, officials from the baseball club said... The plane was owned by Lidle, whose passport was found at the scene of the crash, police officials said.
He was still learning to fly, his registration was still pending at the time of the crash. The instructor probably handed him control and it went wrong.

On the plus side, it wasn't a terroist attack.
However, this accident shows that another attack similar to 9-11 could still be easy in New York, even after the tightened security (for example, asking if you are a terrorist  ).
