I am looking into purchasing a new monitor, a flat panel in particular seeing as I currently own an ugly, cumbersome Dell CRT. After looking into them, the prospect of a widescreen flat panel monitor has aroused my interests somewhat, although pricing seems to be predictably steep. Now, I am not all that accustomed to widescreen, as we do not have a widescreen television, so is it really practical to have a widescreen monitor? What are the main advantages and disadvantages towards them? Whatever the case, I will at least be buying a flat panel but the ability to watch a movie in proper widescreen on the monitor seems worthwhile, though I hear that they can sometimes interfere with incompatible games for example and produce odd looking webpages.

I have two monitors, a 24" widescreen and a 19" that isn't (both tfts). Now, I find it extremely handy; it gives you a whole lot more side space for things like bars (in applications like photoshop, visual basic... even games like World of Warcraft etc), and gives pretty much all games a very nice feel. I've never had a problem with any game running, a few things don't support widescreen resolutions but look fine in a normal res.

Widescreen monitors are fantastic, the space is so much more usable than a standard 4:3 ratio monitor.
I'd love to have a widescreen monitor just for the sake of watching movies....i dont think i really need the extra desktop space to do other things.
I don't think the ones dell sells are that pricey......... isnt it about 200 for a 20 inch??

I was looking at theirs seeing as I would like it to match my Dell components, but it was £400 for a 20" I believe.
hmm yes that extra inch is more expensive although on the US dell sites its onsale for about $350
the 19 inch monitors start at 191 at the moment (which i think is a very modest price). If i wasnt planning on replacing my entire pc in a month or so i would buy one
