it depends on what you want to do with it.
work or play.
mac = work
pc = play

Ok mac's have the look and amazing color displays, but i hate the layout of them.
I prefer working with pc's, so that's my vote.

plus there's a lot more software readily available for pc's than mac's

I am a heavy gamer, and as someone said before me, PC's are for gaming, Macs for work, especially Graphics work, from what I'v heard.

I havnt used a Mac, so BUT, since there are so few things released for Mac, I pick PC...

My main quibble with macs is that apple wont allow other companies to make components and have the ability to build a custom computer meaning you need to buy a whole new one every time you want to upgrade. As for windows vs. OSX from my limited experience with OSX it is much more stable and nicer to play about with so it'd get my vote.

I maintain 8 PC's at work that are set up as non-linear editing suites running in:sync Speed Razor. I often have students asking why we dont use MAC's and Final Cut Pro. The simple answer is that pc's can easily be upgraded as technology advances. I can stick a couple of sticks of RAM or a new CPU in one of my machines to speed it up. With a Mac you have to buy the newest model complete.

I use a PC at home because i like to fiddle and i like the option to upgrade it a component at a time.

I like windows XP pro better than OSX, but anything lower I prefer OSX for stability and windows for speed. I prefer Linux over all of them but for compatibility I run Windows on my work comp and Linux on my messing about comp.

/me didn't vote...

i think everything has its uses...
pc - games
mac - graphics
linux - servers
c64 - tape players

I'm the opposite of C. Red. I can't work on PCs because for the Windows GUI... I hate how every program has to be in a box... But that could just be that I learned Photoshop and QuarkXPress on a Mac and not on a PC...

Apple makes computers, they don't just make software like Microsoft does. That is why you don't get all the third party choices that you get with PCs...

i disagree with the upgrading issue... i ran a 400mhz g4 and was quite fine with it for two years... even after i made the move to Mac OS X...

One thing I learned... never go to apple.com to buy a mac... go to a dealer. Apple.com's upgrade pricing is horrible! 250 bucks for a 512mb ram upgrade! Thats one thing I dislike about apple! They never update the upgrade prices. They still want $300 for you to upgrade an ati 9600 to a 9800. Which is another thing... Macs are suppose to be graphic machines, but apple.com never offer professional graphic cards. They just use mac versions of the popular pc gaming cards...

I have two macs at work a g4 and an old g3... at home i have two pcs... one is a pc that i built for gaming the other is old 233 that is running linux...

And I think that is how it is... if macs and pcs where cars... The Mac is the Cadillac that you use to get around town... The PC is the race car that you tweak and upgrade, then take to the track...

I will personally seek out and kill all who vote for mac.

PC deserves every vote, it's so much better.

if you actually just want to do some decent work, running smoothly, and not crash, macs are good.
just because some fools find them confusing, doesnt mean that they are crap.

As much as I love macs (and yes i do love them) history hasnt been kind and unfortunatly they arent really an option unless you are doing graphics, or just want to do basic things. Unless of course you want one as a second computer with the PC. Then that is quite a good idea but otherwise PCs are better for most people unfortunatly.

PCs are much better because of windows. it gives you all the support and stuff you need for hardware, and i find them a lot easier to use.

I've been working on pc's for about seven years now; the first real encounter with a mac was very funny. It took me over 5 minutes to work out that, yes, you have to click the apple in the corner to get all the programs :).

My first real encounter was at my current school (I'm in year one) where all the pc's are constantly occupied. Since not a lot of people know macs, they on the other hand, were always avaible. I started working on them just for fun at start but really starting working when I heard I could help a teacher assist in DTP class (Desktop Publishing; in this case > adobe photoshop and quark express) and get some important grade for it. Within a month I got used to them; it's quite simple.

When I have to choose, I will definitely choose the pc though. Of course pc's/mac's at schools aren't top-notch, but still I find it much easier/faster to work with a pc.

So pc's it is :) .

Theres one thing that always troubled me about Macs, and that was the one button on the mouse thing.

You have to hold a key on the keyboard to access the equivalent of the right click uin windows. Why not just have right mouse button???

Mac computers are not as good as the company would like you to believe. The company used misleading and false advertising for the new G5. Click here (http://spl.haxial.net/apple-powermac-G5/) to read what I mean.
The quality of a Mac is usually high, but if you go with a good manufacturer, an IBM clone should be a reliable machine, also. As for the operating systems, I've never worked with the Mac OS, but as far as reliability, Win XP works quite well.
The biggest reason the PC gets my vote is that Macs are NOT worth what they price them at. You can get a PC and a huge load of software for the price of a Mac with an empty hard drive.

even if they are trying to mislead customers the fact still stands that the g5 is the only 64bit processor that is both widely available and ready for use with a widespread OS, personally ive got a powerbook and i love it ill be honest i do have major problems with OS9 but OSX.3 is working perfectly for me ive had no real problems. ok price is a factor i paid 1200/1300 quid for mine (with a student discount) and its so pretty come on it has a glowing apple on the back. (and yes that does make it better so ner :p )

I do feel honoured having a thread dedicated to me and what I am going to spend my money on. It is a bit of a dilemma and I still don't know the answer.

I have used a pc for years now and have only recently used a mac. They were annoyingly retarded to use at first but I have kinda got the hang of them now. I think this is the main reason that people don't like them. People are so used to being brought up using a pc and feel comfortable using them. Why should they use a mac...

I will probably still be making the same decision next year.
Till then I will have to refer to myself as mac curious...
Does this make me a lesbian?

but i do like macs, they have the edge on pc's.... if only they would be cheaper, i would consider getting one
But like everyone has been saying, it heavily depends on what you will be using the machine for!

As of right now, yes, but AMD has several 64 bit processors out, and there should be a 64 bit windows out soon. I saw the tests with the bete version of windows, and the thing absolutely SCREAMS. I don't know how soon a windows laptop with a 64 bit processor will be available. If you switch to a 64 bit machine, you have to update any software you have, even if the OS is 64 bit, otherwise it will still be in 32 bit mode.

I'm from Texas, I use Winders. Ye-ha.

The PowerBooks look nice, cost more and are a bastard crossed with a monster to repair. If anything goes wrong, you will be in tears having a nervous breakdown within seconds.

PC laptops are less expensive, do everything a Mac will and more, since there are worlds more software and tons more support available for PC. If you buy a Dell laptop or notebook, you will experience fewer problems. If you experinece problems, tech support will hold your hand and take care of your problem in as timely a manner as is humanly possible if not faster.

Some people still prefer Macs. I have serviced and used both Macs and PCs. I am firmly in the PC camp now. Even journalism is going the PC route and giving up all their Macs.

Between PC and Mac, I would say Mac.

I'm not a heavy games player - only game I play like mad is Battlefield 1942.

Everything else is purely creative - video editing, graphics, typing(?!?) can be done on a Mac and it'll score u cool points with the chicks.

Only problems are the price and the implementation into my current PC network.

In the end, it's up to usage.

I hate the idea of owning a machine that has anything to do with Microsoft, but the sad reality is where I live macs will always be in the minority.

For me it would idealy be Mac, BUT!!!! because of the limitations of Mac im forced to use Windows with all it glitches. If only IBM hadnt have sold DOS to microsoft all that time ago, Microsoft might not have kicked off and we would have operating systems that runs everything and dosnt always crash!

I forgot that my favorite use for my old Mac was playing games. I had some beautiful games on it that have never shown up in Windows format. Poo.

Microsoft was launched as much by their success with the software they wrote for Apple as it was for the version of DOS they did not license to IBM. I hate Microsoft as much as the next techy geek, but I have to give credit where credit is due: all that nonsense about what Bill and Paul stole is utter urban legend. They built their corporation from the ground up and did it all without stealing anything from anybody. IBM never sold PC-DOS to anybody, they bought the rights to it from Bill and his partner Paul. Apple bought their original OSes from them, as well.

The evil comes from Bill trying to monopolize the entirer computer world. Thank God for competition.

yeah its true however apple did have some serious inovations for their time and infact AT and T did too little is it known that they developed the mouse but never patented it they have/had a development lab in the states and IBM and apple were being showed around one day and they saw this little device and were amazed and decided obvisously to use it.

im a techy geek ill admit it, but i must be the only one who doesnt have a serious problem with microsoft/bill gates the way i see it is that people have a choice what they use (computer-wise) and if they dont like it use an alteritive.

oh yean and some of the old mac games were amazing.....ah the good old days of strip mac errr.. i mean marthon.
