Could do with a bit more specific info, for example error messages etc...
Also saving as bmps, I think it depends on the file type, because a lot of the time this happens to me too. It's because microsoft didn't include GIF conversion into explorer, only JPG, so you can save JPGs as JPGs or BMPs and GIFs only as bmps.

I think you have to re-install the operating system, but what sometimes makes stuff like that happen is when you're un-installing programs, it asks you if you want to delete certain files which are in the windows system file, and it could mess up your pc. most people dont read what theyre being asked if they want to un-install, and just say 'yes to all'. thats whats happened to me before.

Running XP?
I used to have a similar problem, just reinstalled Windows.
Anyway, click Start, then Run, and type "sfc /SCANNOW".
It should check all the Windows system files for changes, just in case you picked up something nasty.

Ther is a bug in I.E that when the cache is full it will only save images as BMP's. Clear your cache.

I just got the XP disc, but I don't know how to reinstall it. And I got a virus which won't let me open programs unless I right click and do run as. How do I do it? I want to recover me comp.

If your CD is an XP boot disk, you basically insert it into the drive, leave it in there, and start the computer. If the boot order is set right in the BIOS, it will actually boot the computer off the CD and give you some options. It is pretty straightforward to use, just follow the on-screen help.
If it doesn't boot off the CD, the boot order is wrong in the BIOS. If your computer has something like "press F8 for boot menu" in the very first startup screen, press that and choose the CD-ROM.
P.S: Be very careful with an XP boot, there are plenty of options on there that format your hard drive, erasing everything. Make sure you read everything very carefully.

A "Robot Wars" style chant builds in the background:
"Pit! Pit! Pit! Pit!"
I recommend the drop zone first, though.
Actually, after you have tried the sensible suggestions listed above, try to uninstall the dratted game and then run a virus scan. Buy, borrow or steal a copy of Norton System Works and run Win Scan too. If it doesn't fix the problem(s) then burn the damned thing at the stake.
Please note that I endorsed the sensible suggestions. Do not go for the drive wipe just yet.

If you have a recovery disc, it should be bootable-put it in, wait for the CD screen to pop up and press R to pop up the recovery console. Type Chkdsk to check for hdd errors. Type exit to exit

Same for Time, bloody hell - my laptop... I have no install CD for Windows and no drivers  My boyfriend is doing convoluted things to try and format and reinstall (he has a Windows ME CD but I have no drivers, and Windows Update doesn't find them...)
