View Full Version : Non-video, non-electronic gaming (*gasp*)

Being more of a tabletop gamer than a video game fan, I'm wondering if anyone else plays any... you know... paper games?
Don't get me wrong, I have spent more than my fair share of money on video games too, but I was a little surprised to see /no/ non-electronic/non-video games talked about here.
Anyone play anything that's not plugged in?

Used to be a (whisper it) Warhammer and 40k player. Until I moved house and managed to completely destroy my armies by putting the TV on top of the box they were in, squishing them into teeny pieces.

I used to play Warhammer 40,000 as well. Not really interested in it anymore. I still have most of my figures though :p
But other than the occasional board game or card game, I mostly only play videogames, I'm afraid.

I play table football every week with some mates. I usually beat them though so I think I need a new challenge.
I'm going to be building a table football after christmas for my product design A level.
Also play poker when I get enough people to play, not many of my friends like it which is a shame. I entered a tournament not long ago, I came 5th out of about 40 which was quite cool.

Former 40k, still really love the universe, ignoring all the recent race additions (Necrons/Tau - both waste of time imo, necrons were ok when just mysterious terminator like raiders which nullified power weapons and didn't have blummin gods etc.).
Play poker with friends occasionally, usually just £5 buy in, winner takes all bar £5 for second place.
Looked at a pen and paper rpg once, got the GURPS discworld book but not really that interested.

I, too, used to be a Warhammer guy. I also dabbled in WH40k and Necromunda, but Warhammer was where it was at. Eventually I got bored of spending so much money on tiny plastic dudes and just sold off all my stuff, though. I don't really miss it, getting a game together was more of a headache than it was worth.
I am all about Monopoly, although I haven't played for a while. I got into it pretty hardcore with 3 friends a couple of years ago and we'd play 2 or 3 times a week with each game turning into an epic emotional rollercoaster of alliances, backstabbings, gloating, and arguing about rules. Just so you know, the rulebook in the Edinburgh edition (and presumably all regional editions) is bullshit, it's way too short and vague and completely misses some things out. It basically assumes the players know how to play monopoly already. Good thing I had my parents set from the 70s with the huge wordy rulebook to bore everybody with. :)

Used to play some Warhamemr games, fantasy and 40K. But gave that up at the same time I gave roleplaying up. I focused on my music instead. I've also played alot f Diplomecy. Own the game(bought it just for fun and if some friends was interested in trying it out). But I've got a recent urge to take up Warhammer again, or just paint the models. I've got loads of cool configurations and ideas for an army and characters.

I used to play 40k, but not anymore, it seems to be a fad, but I love the story of the universe and read some of the books that are there which are quite groovy really.
I also used to play cards, loads of card games at school before the morning started.
Nowadays the only paper based gaming I have time to do is doodling while in phone conferences.

I do have a pretty big army of Wood Elves and Necrons, but since my local club stopped, I haven't bothered playing them at all, since I can't be bothered going to a Games Workshop every time I want to play. Star Wars Miniatures (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Miniatures) is a fantastic board/ war game, but it's hard to find places that sell them, and there's literally nobody I know who'll play with me.
Other than that, I play all board and card games on 42 all time classics...

I used to play warhammer, 40k and a bit of DnD on tabletop.
As well as the good ole monopoly and mastermind.
Now I normally play poker or blackjack ;D

I like to play Poker quite a bit, Guts is probably my favorite game other than Texas hold 'em. Ialso play Pool (Billiards) as much as I can, but I don't have a table so I don't play too often. Foosball is really the best though.

Yeah, Warhammer does have that interesting backstory stuff going for it. Did anyone ever play Warhammer Quest? That was quite good. Rather less taxing on the mind than the big strategy games.

If boardgames count, I actually made a boardgame last holidays called "Head of State".
It's a mix of Monopoly, Risk and some weird ideas - it's awesomely fun though.
I lost the board though, and I lost the file on my computer which had all the stuff.
Sad'd.

with the right group of people, allowing profanity and other naughty trerminology to be used can make things quite interesting ;)

Had some Warhammer, two starter box sets meant I had Lizardmen, Bretonnians, Empire and Orcs & Goblins. Though I also collected some Wood Elves. I only ever had one battle and that was in a GW Store. I just liked painting the guys and creating scenery. Best discovery was useing grape stalks as tree trunks.
Anyway, the my only battle was a result of one of the GW making fun of me, making 'save the trees' jokes because of my Wood Elves. So I had 75% of my army as Archers and the rest was Wardancers. I love Wardancers - greatest models in my opinion. Anyway I just ripped the guys army apart with my archers and the two units that did get close to my archers, I just had my Wardancers leap over and attack. I left very smug.I would love to take part in more RPG games, but find there are always too many rules and I don't have the time for them. Maybe I just need to give them a chance and they are actually easier once you do know the rules.
I used to play Magic:TG for a little bit if that counts?
Also I bought some Warhammer and couldn't be fucked to paint it.

I play Magic online and with a physical deck, but only like three of my friends have decks, so.
I "auditioned" for a DnD online group but the group was kind of sexist, racist, and annoying, so I decided that I didn't want to play with them. Also the program they used seemed kind of dumb, or they just didn't know how to use it. I'd like to play with a real group sometime, though.

woo, I am officially more nerdy than you all. I get to be the first person to say I play DnD or similar tabletop RPGs.
In my opinion, if you're GOING to spend time pretending you're an elf, you might as well do it with some friends rather than sitting on your own at a computer. There are no problems with coding and you can technically do anything, so long as your DM is moderately useful and has a sense of humor.
God I feel like such a geek admitting this, but it IS fun, I swear

I D&D'd for a bit, 3rd ed and 3.5 were awful though and most of the group suddenly discovered booze and/or Never Winter Nights so it all sort of fell apart. Played Warhammer until their constant price rises got too much. Played Magic the Gathering, but only one other chum played that so it got dull quickly. Ger,am flatmate is obsessed with Monopoly, to quite an odd degree considering how bad at it he is, that got old fast but he still forces us to play. Someone invent a good game which doesn't cost the earth or get boring too fast!
Oh and there's nowt wrong with being geeky ;)

Yeah, I guess not. But we still dont ADMIT it >_>
Anyway, yeah, 3rd ed wasnt so bad, since it was customisable. Sure, there were lots of stupid additions and changes, but its up to the DM how rigidly you stick to the rules.
I randomly got into tabletop stuff when I got invited to a game randomly by some people I met in college and got quite into it. Then, oddly, new people kept joining our games and suddenly there was a fairly large group of 20 or so people doing several games at once. If you get good roleplayers who dont take it too seriously, the games can be awesome.
We mostly use DnD, but we've also tried a D20 Star Wars RPG and amusing little systems like risus and mascot tan for little improvised games. I'm also about to run a cyberpunk campaign using modified GURPs rules.
They're trying to get me into Magic the Gathering, but I've yet to see the appeal
I was going to buy the CSI board game...
but I thought that noone else is obsessive enough about that show to play it with , so I just got the new CSI PC game.

I've recently taken a liken to Texas Hold 'em Poker, as i've just learned it. Too bad my set is so crappy compared to the briefcase ones.
Black bitch, a variation of hearts, is also fun.
Speaking of homemade games, we made a game called Impossigame.
Rules are simple. You have 900 and something squares. First to the end wins.
Roughly 1/3 of the squares have fluro colours on them, either green pink or yellow.
You pick up a corresponding peice of paper of that colour, and it has things on it.
2/3 of the cards say you loose.
1 says you almost win but unfortunately you loose.
1 says you are eaten by [insert random persons name here] and therefore you loose.
1 says go to square 973 or so if you are gay, or go back to the start if you aren't.
Only 1 person has ever won, but not really, because they aren't actually gay.

Yeah, Texas Hold 'Em is quite fun. I'm not sure I 100% understand the rules though, and I don't really have enough people for a really interesting game.

I played Magic:TG when I was at school, but now I only know 1 person who plays - my brother - and we haven't bought new cards in ages. I like to kick his arse at it every now and then though. Also, I like Monopoly and Scrabble, even though I'm fairly shit at Scrabble. I like Poker too, particularly Hold'em, even though I can only play online because I don't know anyone else who likes it.

I play both pool and snooker, I enjoy a good card game (learning poker at the moment) and I love pictionary.
And I am proud to say I have never touched a Warhammer figure!
Also, a few of my mates and I recently made Dictator Trump Cards, which is bloody hilarious, so that has been played recently!
