Dusk Till Dawn. Brilliant film, although was badly received but it has got a huge cult following now. Its not supposed to be taken seriously either I don't think, which, in all honesty it would be hard to take any other way. Anyway, recommended if you haven't seen it (but i'm guessing most of you have)

Bad Tatse by Peter Jackson - You watch this (and his other horror flick Brain Dead) and wonder how he got the job making LOTR. I'm glad he did though.
Anyway, Bad Taste. Over the top, cheap, independnant, gorefest. I love it.

are you saying brain dead isnt a gore-fest?
i can't belive that, as it hold the record for the most amount of fake blood used in a movie.
i love that movie, its so funny and different to anything else, who else uses a flymo as a weapon?

bad taste is a great film! I love it!
I dunnow if the shining is really considered cult, I assume it is, but am not sure. Some slightly less terrifying films are, Harold and Maude and eraserhead (ok eraserheads a bit wierd. Oh and the bit where a teenager and the old woman kiss in harold and maude is a bit gross but, hey! thats what makes a film a good film, and then a cult film)

Oh what a suprise.
The 'you’re too stupid to get it' tactic.
Nice try.

Like I got the Matrix & Requiem for a Dream.
I just happen to think that they are awful awful films.
I can go in-depth if you wish, & give an analysed critique but I'd probably just be slagging off your favourite films & then you’d get all upset & defensive.

I wouldn't say my favourite films were cult films, so this is a little off topic, but since you asked (I assume you asked so you can diss my taste in films, but feel free. Everyone is entitled their own opinion & if I can dish it out then I can take it as well.)... Waking Life, Alice in Wonderland, The Virgin Suicides, American Beauty, Magnolia, Amelie, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, Ghost World, Schindlers List.

I haven't seen these films yet. To some degree, you could call both of them cult, as one of them is independant and the other is in a non-commersial Language for films (As in English).
Also, notice how non-English speaking countries have a much stronger film industry than we do.
The British film industry is picking up quite well at the moment, but as we speak English, we tend to get Hollywood films first and there is an unwilling part to finance British films - look at the Ealing Comedy's for example.
But Film Four is our best bet for a distrubitor - They tried to hit America, releasing films like Death To Smoochy, but unfortunetly, Film Four didn't quite make it big, so they are just staying in the UK for now.
And no, I can not spell to save my life.

ehe the book was stunning, i loved it, if you liked that you should check out the dice man and high rise, which probably has the best opening line ever
later as he sat on his balcony eating the dog dr robert laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months

Cult movies are some of my favirotes...I don't know if you'd call some of these "cult" or not. They are lesser known, but entertaining nonetheless...
1. The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy
Samuel L. Jackson as Col. Ron "If they hadn't shot my dick off in 'Nam, I'd whip it out and piss in your face!"
2. The Big Lebowski
"The Dude abides."
3. Young Frankenstein
"Hearts and kidneys are tinkertoys. I'm talking about the central nervous system."
4. Swimming With Sharks
"I told you, it's gotta be loud loud loud! The audience should feel their balls tremble, their ears should bleed!"
5. The Last Supper
"I say we bury the cracker and have dessert."
6. Dark Star
7. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension
8. Cube
9. Brazil
10. Harold and Maude
Just to name a few....

I would like to recomend the movie Black Samurai too you. It's probably the worst movie ever made. It even tops Plan 9 From Outer Space, and that's pretty damn extraordinary.
WARNING! spoilers ahead!
I don't really think it will spoil the movie for you though, as it's so insanely bad and the sound quality is so low you will probably have to see it twice to understand what's actually going on. Some of the events and some of the dialogue is still a mystery to me and I've seen it 3 times...
I can even provide pictures from it:
http://home.no/magnarmuller/bs1.jpg
Here we see Jim Kelly, playing the black samurai (secret agent for D.R.A.G.O.N.), driving his purple sports car.
The plot is amazing. He is sent on a mission to hunt down the leader of a crime league operating in the fields of prostitution, drug dealing, black magic, satanic ritual murders and the occult. Here we see the black samurai at a party held by the leader of the league. The party is filled with prostitutes, and the leader of the league reads the samurais mind and blows his cover.
They actually used the same recordings over and over again because they couldn't afford shooting all the footage they needed.
http://home.no/magnarmuller/bs3.jpg
Jim Kelly at the party
Later in the movie the black samurai grabs a jetpack (you can see the threads he is being kept in the air with) and flies to an island for no apparent reason. There he battles a midget swinging from tree to tree on a rope.
http://home.no/magnarmuller/bs5.jpg
The black samurai at the island.
Later on he is put in a prison cell filled with snakes. He torches the snakes with a flamethrower in a pen and then escapes by torching the iron lock with the same flamethrower. I'm not sure if that scene was meant to insult our intelligence.
http://home.no/magnarmuller/bs9.jpg
FACT: a flamethrower is a decent replacement for lockpicks... especially iron locks on iron bar doors.
See the movie and laugh your ass off.
Looks like that is where they got the inspiration for undercover brother from then ;)

I love this movie I've only seen once, "Heartbeeps" (1981), with one of my favorite divas, Bernadette Peters as "AquaCon 89045", a female robot and Andy Kaufman.
They play two robots who decide to escape and be free and they are so sweet and innocent. They find other robots and one of those robots is a comedic robot, so he can only communicate what he means to say through jokes and puns. It's very moving when he tries to say something sad and it only comes out a sadness related joke.
I remember a scene close to the end of the movie where they have sort of run out of batteries and are getting paralyzed. She's already perfectly still and he's almost saying that he loves her when he too comes to a complete halt. But if I well remember it does have a happy ending, although it's a tear jerker. Innocence and naiveness always make me cry pool of tears.

One of my favorite cult movies is the Japanese film "Battle Royale", mainly because its soo strange. About a class of grade 9's who get transported to this deserted island where they have to kill each other to be the last one alive, otherwise they all die.
I know there was a sequal to the movie but I haven't seen it yet.

And let's not forget "Bagdad Cafe" and "Sugar Baby" both starring Marianne Sägebrecht. Bagdad Cafe's soundtrack is a cult music in itself. In that movie Marianne is a foreigner who comes to this café stuck in the middle of nowhere and begins to stir things up and get people unstuck from their monotonous, dreary lives; a bit like Mary Poppins, like she's a magical person who can make things happen.
In the second movie she's someone with a humdrum life herself, but she decides to take action when she falls in love with a guy when she hears the sound of his voice. Although he's married she decides to try to seduce him anyway. Their affair is really touching.
I think both movies have a fairytale like simplicity about them.

I've heared a lot about a movie called Bubba Ho-Tep.. But since I havent seen it, and it would be such a waste to get a dvd from the states just to realise that it's crap, I'm wondering what you think about it if you have seen it..
Not sure that it is a cult movie, but people say that it is so...
Littleshore-- Bubba Hotep was a great movie. I was prepared for crap, but my husband made me watch it. If you are a bruce cambell fan, it's a must see

All time best ever cult movie in existence is undoutecly Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. This movie has played a crucial and monumental role in warpping and twisting my mind into the ooditiy it is since before I can remember. (Which is why I'm all psyched up for an upcoming film of his, The Corpse Bride. Burton returns to stop-motion animation! And it's coming out Halloween of this year!) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121164/

Heh,
I love you guys. You ask for cult movie recommendations and give mainstream movie answers - brilliant :p
I would recommend Sergio Leone's not so well known movie "A Fistful of Dynamite" sometimes known as "Duck, You Sucker". It forms the second part of the "Once Upon a Time In..." Trilogy.

Hmmmm, cult movies not mentioned so far....
Withnail and I: Perhaops one of the ultimate cult movies, I only saw this for the first time recently, genius. Moderate/heavy spannering.
Human Traffic: Perhaps more a movie about the cult than the other way round. Spannering at record levels.
The Blues Brothers: Superb work of cinema, maybe escaping the cult category even. Spanner free.
Drunken master (2): I've only seen the original, but thats pretty cult as far as kung fu fulms go. Spanner free.
Up in Smoke (and other Cheech and Chong films): Classic stoner action. Heavy spannering.

Thanks! I have spoken to quite a few people lately, and noone seemed to hate it, so i'll take my chances and get it shipped from the states. I think I'll buy it when I get my money from the local authority(done 3 weeks of work for them and still nothing>:( ). I saw it on Amazon.com and it wasn't that expensive.. Hope the shipping won't be too steep..

Oh, and Luc Besson's "La Femme Nikita," the french original, not the American version. If you liked that one you should also see his "Atlantis," it's so beautiful.

They're one and the same. The whole title of the film is "La Femme Nikita," not just Nikita as it came to be known.

City Of Lost Children
All brilliant films + very cult.

well, I 've only seen some of Donnie Darko...I obviously have to get to a Blockbuster...anywho, Leon/The Professional is amazing, even though it's already been mentioned. and I don't know that Immortal Beloved is cultish, but it's not exactly mainstream. And I love Jesus Christ Superstar! Another one that's not real mainstream. You have to see the Norman Jewison version, though, with Ted Neely as Jesus. There's another version out there that really sucks. and I loved Snatch, and Sid and Nancy. I guess that's it for now.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned 'cept:
Clerks, Fight Club (didn't do too well at the box office but had a good cult following), Planet of the Apes (and sequels), the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Thing.

I think I've heard Pitch Black described as a cult film. If it is, it's probably one of my faves. I haven't seen that many of the films mentioned here, but the ones I like that have been mentioned are Fight Club (awesome), Leon (Gary Oldman = awesome), and probably Nightmare Before Christmas (not quite sure why).

Night of the Living Dead and the original Dawn of the Dead. Both by George Romero
There's also Day of the Dead, which I haven't seen.
They're now making another in the series, with Zombie Cameos from Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright after George Romero saw their work in Shaun of the Dead, it's called Land of the Dead.
But you lot probably knew that already...

Day of the Dead is the best one, so you have to go and see it now.
Well, best from an entertainment perspective anyway

Assalt on Precinct 13, classic
And the original 1927 Fritz Lang Metropolis which in my opinion is the oldest film in the world thats still actually good.

before you say you don't like anime, you must watch "spirited away".
it's one of the best movies i've ever seen, and even my friends who hate anime thought so.
also, watch the cowbow bebop movie. It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense unless you've watched a couple of episodes, but it's not like you won't understand anything. Plus, it's still overflowing with the atmosphere of the series.

Godzilla (the original 1954 Japanese version)... it is quite a dark film and miles better than the sequels it spawned through out the 60s & 70s.

If by cult you mean excellent, non mass media film, bit kooky and admired by nearly all who watch - then please watch Slingblade.
Awesome film.

I've just finished watching 'Cannibal - the musical' and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Trey Parker's first film, made pre-South Park while he was still in college. Bloodthirsty, incredibly low budget, and the writing certainly needs to be refined a little bit, but it still throws up a lot of genuine belly laughs. Particularly the "Native Americans". Matt stone's performance is typically irritating but, as with every Trey Parker film, Dian 'Squeak' Bachar totally steals it from beneath everyone's noses.
I'd definitely recommend it, though. If only to see how far Parker's humour has come since then.
