ok, i was on hotmail, checking my emails(as you do) and i go to the junk folder(coz i always check it and clear it)and i come across a funny looking email subject and address,

the address was something like: aimeescott99@hotmail.....
and the subject line was: your IP was logged

but the funny thing was, it had a attachment icon and the email size was something over 100kb

i didnt open it or anything, but now im starting to get slightly worried...

what was wrong with it?was deleting it the best thing to do???

HELP ME PLEASE....all suggestions and stuff greatly appreiciated

If it's in the junk mail folder, then it was put there for a reason.

Ignore it.

yeah, deleting it was prob best thing, dont worry about it, there wont be anything to damage your pc if you didnt open it!

Social engineering.

That file is most likely a virus, and by telliing you your IP was logged (most likely not), it is trying to trick you into opening the attachment.

I wouldn't advise opening it if you weren't expecting it.

Delete unknown junk = GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!
Open and run attachments on unknown junk = BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD! VERY BAD!

Feel better? You did the smartest possible thing you could have done. I'm proud of you.

Always remember: When in doubt, pitch it out! Don't forget to empty the trash, too.

awwwww...thanks dr e.

im proud of myself too!

i just empty the trash every day, or when i really need to, i used to open attachments on fowards but i dont anymore(slightly paranoid is why)

it probably was a virus, and im sooooooooo glad i didnt open it, but anyways...

If you don't know what it is and it looks dodgy (100kb in an attachment that looks like a document is an awful lot of text) ditch it...

If people get angry you didn't reply to their mail, shout at them to use an understandable subject title and the email account you know them by...

Also, mail the next link to people who keep sending you forward mails

http://bob.bob.bofh.org/~robm/manual/virus/gullibility.html

Helps a a lot :D

heh

i just delete every foward, usually...yeah that over 100kb with an attachment did look strange..very strange

ah well,

better to forget it,

yep, never open funny looking attachments from people you dont know,

somebody kept sending me an email with an attachment claiming to be a 'cool screen saver' claiming it was different every email.

i warned em if they email me again il spam their email box so they can never email again.

they sent me another email...

so i signed em up for about 500 spam emails a day and i never heard from them again

Do you realise it might not have been them sending the email? It could have been a virus they had...

It's also possible it wasn't them at all.
Consider this: it's easy for you to send an email from someone like b.gates@microsoft.com (no idea if this addy exists, just using it as an example). Of course, if the person replies to this email, the *real* b.gates@microsoft.com will get the reply (unless whoever sent it added a changed reply address).

Just a thought before anyone tries to sign up every spam emailer for spam, purely on the displayed origin address- methods like this are used by several.

I sent a few people a picture of a public outhouse ( looking down ) with the caption "Don't send me yours & I wont send you mine"

The problem is this doesn't work with automatic systems, because no one looks at the picture. Besides, most 'remove me' buttons just invite more spam, because now they know that the email address is good.

If you get a file sent to you from an unknown person or someone who doesn't keep up the anti-virus software on their computer, deleteing it is the best thing to do. Even if it was something you may have liked, you will survive without it.

One particular moron would not leave me alone and kept sending FWDs of chain letters in batches. I signed him up for all the news letters for little children, new parents, retired people, school teachers and religious leaders. I spent a whole weekend fixing him up for things he would never have wanted in the first place. I enlisted the aid of several family members and friends to sign him up for spam mail as well. One family member mailbombed him in the end, but that was done independently and I only found out about it over a year later.:D Oh, such wickedness that dwells within the best of us.

Hm! Never thought about a parrot raising dragon babies! They do hatch from eggs, but parrots have notoriously tiny butts. How would you keep them warm?

*cackles a silly dragon-y cackle*

We also stopped an online stalker in the same manner. I know some of you kids do it for fun, but this sicko was not in it for the funzeez!

Way off topic: Go google your own family name. See how many hits you get. Look for celebrity tie-ins and hospitals named after your family.

Dr-Electro

I thought mine was too common, as well. I was surprised at how many hits it turned up anyway. Don't forget to google your mother's maiden name while you are at it. Never know what lurks up the old tree on that side.

My family name turns up about 627,000 hits. Mother's maiden name gets 21,500. Not an impressive number, but the first five hits are links to big-time scientists in the States and Germany. (Shame I'm from such a dumb family. [/sracasm])

There are no cowards in my camp, mini. Square up those shoulders! Be brave! Google that name! (Only kidding, you don't have to if you don't want to.);)

Google somebody else's name instead.

Well, since we were on the subject for some reason, I did a Google on 'Dr-Electro', and one of the things I got was a referance to this (http://www.supermegatopia.com/comics/wb01-01.htm) online comic. ( That link is to the first page, as far as I can tell. The story line is a bit odd ) I stayed up WAY too late reading it, absolutely great!

By the way, I also did one for 'cainam', and I got a lot of referances to some musical group I've never heard of.
