I've had a couple of emails now from otherwise sane friends claiming that "if meltdown@hotmail.com adds u, don't add it to ur list cos its a virus"... How would that possibly work? Could it work? I assume not...

It could work, if you added the person and they then sent you a file with a virus hidden in it. Can't think of any other way, but I'm not too hot on the whole 'virus' thing.

Exactly... I worry about people who think that just adding someone to MSN will cause instant computer death.
No I don't think that adding someone to your MSN list will enable a virus to be present on your machine, unless you accept and run something they give to you.
On the other hand if you already have a virus present on your machine or somehow a virus could spoof you with a message to add someone to your MSN but by clicking yes you ran an executable or whatever.
if you get my meaning?
my head hurts..
mommy?

Nah, that isn't possible, UNLESS there is some kind of buffer overflow vulnerability in MSN Messenger ( ) that allows people to run code on a users' system, just like the Blaster worm.
However, that message is most likely BS, and just a prank against that person in paticular.

Once upon a time in the far, distant past, like three years ago ro so, MSN Messupperer (er, messenger) had a security hole the size of the Pietanic. It was fixed.
The security hole allowed people on your buddy list (or whatever MSN calls those lists) to run code right through your messenger when you were on line. It was even possible to do it trransparently, that is, the receiver of the bad code never knew what was driving right up their arses.
No more security breach, no problem. If the person who wants to be added to your list is a total stranger, make them send you a plain text e-mail stating why and who the heck they are in the first place. Don't just add "buddies" you don't know.
Ellie, always ask Daddy first. You know, Father knows these geeky techy things.:D
*huggles*
obviously a form of revenge or hatred simply replace 'meltdown@hotmail.com' with 'yourname@hotmail.com', voila! Youve got no contacts! Theyve all blocked you.

I have seen these silly things numerous times. It's really getting boring so I'm just going to clear things up a bit. You can not recieve a virus through MSN Messenger without accepting a file transfer from one of your contacts. Be especially careful when accepting executable files (.exe). Don't fall for these 'copy and paste' warnings which usually look something like: If some@emailaddressx.com adds you don't add it because it's a virus tell everybody on your msn because if somebody on your list accepts it then you get the virus too. Don't spread these rediculous messages around. They're not viruses at all, just some lonely individual.
virus rumors nowadays are sadly almost as bad as the virii themselves.
ive lost count of the amount of times that ive received mails from friends saying "virus warning bah bah bah its in your windows system directory but because its so new virus checkers havent got the "cure" for it its got an icon like a teddy bear or something stupid like that" and what do they go and do delete the fucking thing...the guys that write those mails should be rounded up and shot.
