Props to them for trying to resurrect glam rock, but I think Britain is still too ashamed of the whole genre to have it dragged back kicking and screaming by a bunch of twats in spandex.
Give it another 5 years or so, then they can do as they like.

kudos to the darkness for making it big time. I still haven't worked out if they're taking the piss or not though. They sound good though, and kind of remind me of AC DC.

I wish I could say I really like them (I certainly did when their music first came out). Unfortunately I've had the Darkness rammed down my ears at school nearly every day by people who think the whole bloody sixth form want to listen to the same album over and over and over again.
It's happening now with the new Muse album (which is very Origin of Symmetry-ish if you ask me). I just can't stand hearing the same music day in, day out - I try to introduce people to new music, but it just scares them before they get the chance to listen to it (so far I've tried The Farm, Brand New Heavies, some David Gray other than White Ladder, Doves - almost worked).
I agree you shouldn't try and force other people to appreciate your own favourite music, but they should at least listen to yours if you're willing to put up with theirs.
/sorry for going a bit ot there

it's true cadex. Nobody knows if they're taking the piss.
They're either playing old-style cockrock, or they;re taking the piss out of old-style cockrcok, but nobody knows for sure...

You guys do know that their song growing on me (or something like that) is all about their drummer's (or something like that) genital warts. I do not lie.

How dare you compare them to Queen.
I'd hardly call the darkness rock legends

ok... Justin Hawkins can not only sing as fantastically as ol' Freddie, but the guy can also plank spank like Brian May. And he's just one of the 4. Booyah!
Oh, and don't make the mistake of overating Queen. Fabulous singles band. 90% of their album output sucked in comparison. Greatest Hits I & II are essential, and if you buy any Queen albums, best make it Innuendo and A Kind of Magic (aka: Highlander OST). Leave the rest alone ;)

You lie.
Queen were a fantastic band, and there are only a few people comparable to mr May on guitar, such as the bloke from Led Zep, and paul gilbert.
Dont let me hear this blasphemy again

Street Spirit (http://www.thedarknessrock.com/mp3/streetspirit.mp3)
Quite possibly the best cover you'll hear for a long time.
Really. It's just pure Orgasm in about 2 and a half minutes.
But yes. Of course they are taking the piss.. Just LOOK at them. They ARE Spinal Tap, only beard-less, no combusting drummers and new.
[murray]
27-09-2003, 12:18 AM
The best cover ever?
I sriously doubt it.
Reel Big fish - Mmmbop (In the style of James Brown)
Now THEREs a good cover.

And i didn't say Best Cover EVER, i said best cover for a long time.
Oh, and Reel Big Fish... a bit shit really.
Funny lads tho, interview for the Download festival was amusing.

no escaping The Darkness at the mo. the jury is still out for me on their merits. i rather like the singles but from what i've heard i won't be rushing out to buy the album.
when you get your head around the fact that they're taking the piss out of a genre you feel protective of, they're really pretty good musicians.
... so yeah, i think i like them.
rumour is they might be playing a secret gig in Swansea before they head out on tour. although this seems highly unlikely....

When I first heard the darkness I didn't know what to make of them.
But I took advice from a friend and bought the album.
And I must admit, they are growing on me. (meant seriously, not making a joke)
Although lots of the songs have a very similar set-up (and lots of guitar solo's).
I think I like them.

People of the world! Listen to me! The Darkness are rock legends waitin to happen! To address various subjects addressed in this forum i must put them in points.
They can play the guitar as good as Queen can!
So what? They're ugly. U don't need to look good if u can 'spank plank' as well as they can
His voice is special, i hope he gets over his larengitus soon!
I can do quite a good rendition of "I believe in a thing called love". My falsetto impression goes quite well.
People who do not like them are to all be put in a mental institution.
I could listen to that album over and over again! It's class!

once again, are you sure they arent just taking the piss?
JD & Pie
26-10-2003, 11:21 PM
The Darkness ARE jus taking the piss, that's the whole point. They've taken glam rock, which they really enjoy and was never suppposed to be too serious in the first place and parodied it. The whole appeal of the band lies in their reluctance to take themselves seriously, thus the dressing in spandex and sqeaking. The kind of people who don't like the darkness are the pretentious types who think all music has to be either a four to the floor beat or angsty serious stuff. The darkness are (ironically) the lighter side of music. And as for playing guitar as well as Brian May, it's hardly difficult is it? The man made riffage, stuff that's great to listen to, not technically complicated music that's hard to play. If you want the latter then listen to Steve Vai (the man's a genius, although he can't write a song to save his life).
dizzy
27-10-2003, 05:01 PM
The Darkness don't piss me off, it's the pretentious gits who hate them because (for some unknown reason) they are popular as fuck that annoy me.
It's obviously not about the music then, is it?!!?!?
Honestly. Those who willingly brand bands as "sell-outs" (like, for instance, the supposed debate going on about the Bl*ck-*y*d P**s) are just a load of smarmy misers who have nothing better to do than sit around listening to their favourite music and getting it into their heads that the list of musician rules they wrote up in their tiny cretinous brains when they were in Fantasy Fucking Booboo Land are abso-jolly-lutely RIGHT! everyone else is wrong and should be shot. Commercial stuff evil, eeeevil. They don't even give it a chance which. Is. Just. SAD.
guh
P.S. I think the Darkness are superb.
P.P.S. A prize for he who can correctly count up all the times the phrase "nuff said" has been used in this thread.
