What was stolen actually only makes up about 2% of the entire soure code. It's still bad, but could be worse.

Can somebody explain why this is bad? After all, who gives crap about 2000 :p? Yay xp
You have to look at a business level where software upgrades happen over long time. For a personal uses we do a lot more upgrading. My whole department runs 2000. We are not even going to XP. We will wait for longhorn.

hahaha microsoft, i hope it was taken through the bug in outlook, where the hl2 source-code was stolen. Or at least please let it be a bug in windows that caused it. I want microsoft to finally realize that their systems are nowhere near secure and need a little bit more work

I've got longhorn, and TBH it isn't much different to XP. They say it has improved security but I haven't seen the difference.

where did you get longhorn from?
source code information (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/35564.html)
read the last paragraph or two
and this (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/35547.html)
if your too lazy
Whereas it's not really, it's just stuff, and not all of the stuff either. There's an outside chance it could give you information about how you could screw up the world's Windows installations, but the world's virus writers appear to be doing that splendidly without recourse to source access, and carrying on without such access is probably quicker than trying to benefit from it. Finally, this is very important: if you propose to continue working in the IT industry, and somebody offers you a look at the source, just say no. Remember - if you learn too much about the internals of Microsoft products, you may find yourself unable to work for anybody except Microsoft. Yikes. ®
im surprised they're making such a fuss about it really apparently microsoft has been giving the source code out to some goverments (such as russia) so they can adapt the OS better to their needs in an attempt to get to grips with the threat of linux.

microsoft are just being foolish and paranoid because their "wonderful, unique product" isnt hidden from everyone. its not like its really going to make much difference

If you have Longhorn, you barely have a pre-beta, unless you went to the PDC. In either case, you shouldn't expect it to be hugely different, though it is more secure.
Speaking of security, anyone compare the security/virus alerts from Microsoft to those put out by Linux/Apache? Why does the press only cover Microsoft's?

Because 94% of the world's personal computers are running Windows, I would imagine.

Good point. Though, in the Web server market, they're about 50% (I think).

*applause, laughter, standing ovation*
That, my friend, was hilarious. In '96, there was a parody song titled, "Lock Me Up," to the tune of the Stones' "Start Me Up." I wish I still had a copy of it. Your link reminded me of that silly song.
