Make sure the file has the extension ZIP.
If it does, you need to make sure that your file associations are correct.
Load Windows Explorer
Go to the Tools menu and select folder options
Go to the file types tab
Find ZIP in the list and make sure it is associated with Winzip.
That'll probably fix it.

It may be easier to delete any file associations for the .zip extension and then double click your .zip file. When you do, you should be able to just select Winzip from the list that pops up automatically. If that doesn't work, make sure there are no associations for .zip and reinstall Winzip.
Happy unzipping!!!

Or... throw winzip away, throw the .zip accosiation away and just use XP to unzip everything. Whenever you click on a zip file, it'll open as if it was a folder. Very handy..

I turned that off, because it's not so handy when uploading zip files. Usually it's fine but sometimes XP suddenly kicks in and says 'this is actually a folder' and therefore the FTP client creates a folder with the same name as the zip. I use winrar, much better compression.

View THEN Folder Options in Win98
Click on File Types tab, scroll all the way down to ZIP and click Remove. You'll probably have to confirm it.
Following that, download something like WinZip/WinRAR/Win{insertfavouritecompressiontoolextensionhere} and make it associate itself with all archiving formats.
I recommend Power Archiver.
