View Full Version : Putting the fun back in fundraiser (clichéd or what?)

In the last couple of years my life has been affected twice by that super fun happy thing (please note sarcasm) known as cancer. In 2005 I myself was diagnosed with, treated for and successfully recovered from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and recently my mum has been diagnosed with an as yet unknown form of cancer which it turns out will be uncurable.

Myself and several other forumites and non forumites alike, some of whom have also been affected in some way by cancer have decided to organise a fundraising event. We did not however want to do something along the lines of getting sponsorship for performing some silly dangeroud activity like freefalling out a plane from 40000 feet whilst wrestling an alligator and landing in a pit full of rabid Charlie Chaplin impersonators or something like that because its not fun for you.

We've come up with the idea of a charity gaming tournament. This way, you can participate and have fun whilst at the same time doing something good for charity.

We have finalised NO DETAILS of the tournament yet, other than that it will have an entry fee, which will go to a cancer charity, probably Cancer Research UK. It will be open to anyone, not just weeblers, and it is likely that a fair amount of people from a couple of other forums will take part.

The format will probably depend on interest levels, but may take a brackets style or maybe a league or maybe both. If we get lots of people from several forums then we could have interforum matches depending on the game.

I thought I would involve everyone, so here goes. It is up to you to suggest the way the tournament could work. We need suggestions for the following:

Which game we play. It must be free to play, playable online and involve a competition of some sort that does not require a player to first achieve a character level of 50 or some jazz.

What form the tournament should take. Brackets, league, world cup style or maybe another format I havent previously nicked fromt he world of football.

How much the entry fee will be. Bearing in mind that ALL entry fees will go to charity.

Current suggestions for games are: Soldat, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Some form of Poker

What the prizes should be. I will personally pay (only up to a certain amount mind, I'm an unemployed student) out of my own pocket for trophies if thats what people want. They wouldnt be fancy things, but just a little token to show people how awesome you are. Any other suggestions welcome.

I think thats it for the moment. I'm sure that many of you will also have been touched (and not in a sexy way) by cancer at some point in your lives, others of you may have been lucky to escape it and will do so for the rest of your lives. Either way, here is your chance to not only give something back, but actually have fun doing it at the same time. I don't want anyone to feel guilt tripped in to doing this, I want you to do it because YOU want to. If you don't, then that's fine with me, but still feel free to suggest things for this, any input is welcome.

Sorry for the exceptionally long post. If I get admin permission (pretty please?) I will duplicate this thread in to gaming so people who don't check Pap can see it.

Peace

Brilliant, I can't join in due to having dialup. I'll still donate though when I get this damn paypal account working, it's to a good cause.
