I was just thinking earlier when I was playing tennis with a posh girl, who kept swearing. Usually, this is a bit of a turn-off for me but she said 'shit' in a kind of nice, quintessentially English way that I liked. So this made me wonder, what accent do you find the sexiest or most alluring?

Irish accents!

Because if you're able to discern that someone is Irish, it means they're not plastered, and are in fact sober. Which is good, and sexy! :)

Canadian? I'd agree, except that there's no uniform Canadian accent, except the stereotypical one (actually closest to Eastern provincial, isn't it?), which also assumes you discount anything but the European-Canadian linguistic contribution.

on the poll, I voted Australian. I don't know why, but an Australian girl can not even be that hot, but I generally bump her up like, 2 to 3 points based on the sexiness factor.

but, the one that's missing, is I also find Northern English accents really sexy as well. Not Geordie, but Yorkshire and Lancs and places in that sort of area. I know a girl from Doncaster and I would plug her hard.

But male Scottish accents are lovely...

Posh English can be pretty hot (I'm playing Tomb Raider at the moment :p). Australian is quite nice too, but then again I think all my experience of Australian girls has come from soaps and the girls in Australian soaps tend to be better looking than average :D

Also, and it's not often I stick up for the Americans, but it seems unfair to me to just have 'American' on the poll. There are loads of different American accents. Southern/Texan can be nice :)

pebble_rebel
16-06-2007, 10:53 AM
Canadian accents!
How can they be forgotten all that haphazard american cool imbued with the sophiostication of Brits but with the poetry and vulnerbility of french accents. If I was gay, scottish accents are pretty up there.

I don't actually care. There are people who say their accents like liquid chocolate and there are other with exactly the same accent who make it feel like nails down a chalk board. I voted posh english because I thought it was a "what's your accent?" poll. I should learn to read.

Generally I prefer smoother and slightly deeper to the normal screech of the common lass. Too high just does my head in.

16-06-2007, 02:33 PM
It really depends on the person who's speaking... I love Anthony Head's voice, and David Bowie's, and David Tennant (both his Scottish and his Dr Who/Casanova one). Italian can be nice, and the less 'harsh' sounding Scottish accents as well.

A list: Posh English (i.e. clipped RP, not inbred 'charch' style), Australian (it's the kind of sound that usually I would find annoying, but for some reason I don't), French (hm, mellifluous), German (quite scary on men, often a different effect coming from a womens), Southern US (I have no idea why), Washington DC (a bit obscure, but still), Northern Irish (quite harsh-sounding, but southern Irish just makes me think of Father Ted), South Welsh (although it's more pretty than sexy) and Edinburgh (because it sounds better than Glasgow and those are the only 2 Scottish accents I know).
All others that I can think of in the entire world are either weird, 'meh' or just plain bad.

And out of those ones up there, English, Australian and French win equally.

Ofcourse I know what sexy means.

eg. 'that fan-art is sexy' The person who is saying that is not trying to imply that his/her thoughts on the fan-art is that it is sexually stimulating, but that it rocks. That's why I'm asking in what way does he mean "sexy accent", because it could be either.

Japanese singing voices are awesome, but I think it's more of a personal thing than just about nationality.

For example, one person's (for example) chelsea accent might make my ears bleed, while another would cause me to melt through the floor.

Russian accents can swing very wide too.

Bah, I'm from Durham (nobody knows where that is and anyone who does is lying and a shit) so I'm northern enough to class anywhere south of North Yorkshire as the south. It does all depend on where you live though. Someone who lives in Cornwall would easily call Liverpool 'northern' but I'd quickly reprimand them for it, being an obnoxious sod-hat and all.

Awww man, Durham. My brother went to uni there, and my mate's there at the moment (well, not at the moment, it's the holidays). It's kind of Rubbish.

Also, that is quite a good description. I accept that Doncaster isn't "proper" north, because that is Yorkshire and Lancs and Cumbria and that. And I always imagine that the only people who live North of Yorkshire are all old men who drive steam engines like Fred Dibner.

He went to Durham Uni. How can you find Durham City rubbish?! (with a capital 'R'.)

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m55/Svelter/cathedral.jpg

I love the city of Durham. It's sophisticated, friendly, tidy. It's got a cathedral beautiful enough to film Harry Potter there but not be a terrorist target. I was at the regatta there on Sunday. It's just nice. Sorry, if that sounds like a bland description or like the place seems boring, but it is. It's got the same intellectual aura about it that Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge all possess.

Heh, I practically live on the borderline to North Yorkshire. I bike there quite a lot with friends and there aren't really any Fred Dibnahs. They're all fairly posh and look down at us for being middle-class. Well, that's the people that are out. Most of them seem to live in there houses, and by that I mean, permanently.

Jesus, Baabaa, why not just push shit through my letterbox?

GorillaBearBear
16-06-2007, 10:50 PM
Fred Dibnah was a Lancs man anyway, as my English teacher got ver indignant to me about when I thought he was a yorks man (my english teacher comes from leeds, he is apparently very proud)

Anyway, Durham is a very nice city. Undeniably beautiful, I just found there isn't a whole lot to do if you don't have much money, which both my brother and my friend complain about.

We should probably stop.

Weird - my maths teacher not only comes from Leeds but takes the train up there everyday. It's like 80 miles to travel!

Yeah, it is nice but expensive, admittedly. When I go to see friends there we usually end up in Pizza Hut or somewhere where the prices are generally the same in each shop. Oh, and I was joking before. Wasn't being pissy on the internets.

So, I shouldn't have been surprised when someone mistook me for being Canadian while we talked on the phone? I meant much like it, in the sense that both countries have many accents.

But there are certain regions where the accent is similar. Most of the Pacific Northwest has roughly the same one, regardless of which country, and there's a similar pattern in the Midwest, etcetera. Basically anywhere in the southern part of the provinces and northern states, along the border, you get some overlap.

There are other exceptions, though, some of which defy geographical logic.

Not really. I go to a private school but that's about as posh as I get. I lived on a farm for 11 years and was raised on a building site and have a pretty neutral accent really. I mean, it's not like I have a team of butlers but not like when someone gets out paper plates my Mum tells them to put away the fine china. I'm just sort of middle class, although some people regard that as posh, but that's just because they're being hostile.

I'd be interested to see two polls- one for men, one for women. The men seem to like the softer, higher pitched accents (I mean c'mon, Japanese? Usually sounds like a bunch of hamsters on nitrous oxide), whereas the women seem to prefer.... a variety. I think we women aren't really that bothered- I'd still love David Tennant even if he was a bit of a chav.

I sometimes London accents really annoying, which sometimes means I hate the sound of my own voice, which isn't helpful when I'm trying to listen back to me on the radio to see if I made any major cock-ups.

But I stick by earlier comment of Irish accents. Scottish accents are cool too, although only when I can understand them. My Uncle is from Glasgow and there are times when I just guess the right time to nod or laugh, but I suppose it works two ways. And most European accents are lovely too.

i have often tried to think about what an american accent might sound like to a british person but it is hard unless there is an american talking with british perople .

My theory is that the only times we ever hear them is from the women on Neighbours (who usually end up as singers) and the trillions of Australian barmaids in this country.

And all those people are usually rather lovely. Usually.

My theory is that the only times we ever hear them is from the women on Neighbours (who usually end up as singers) and the trillions of Australian barmaids in this country.

Naw man, I just find the accent really sexy, and somehow find australian girls automatically sexy as well, even if they aren't 10 out of 10 lookswise. Of all the girls I have ever pulled in clubs, the australian one was easily the sexiest, even though she wasn't the hottest.

Shame I lost her number really :(
