Much maligned and generally un-pc comic dies in hospital (in the same hospital I was born in).

You never know, they might be.
Or this thread may just turn into a hate filled bucket.
I've been to his club as a family friend had their 21st there :S

The only time I've ever laughed at Bernard Manning was when they showed that clip from Tiswas where some guy was trying to lift him and big daddy and he fell and ripped his trousers. Lolworthy moment.

Awww man, now I'm going to feel slightly harsh every time I call him a dickhead from now on.

Ah well, I mean, he dissed The Mighty Boosh! When he's like the lowest comedic talent going. How dare he?! Plus the whole general dickheadness.

Berndard Righton was AWESOME though. I guess without Manning, we'd never have been treated to Righton, so it was worth it.

I didn't find him funny at times. But he wasn't that bad a guy imo. I think you should lay off him a little, at least out of respect.

I remember reading that he was under investigation a few years ago for making racist jibes at a waitress serving him food. He claimed it was just a bit of light hearted fun or some crap.

He should be remembered as the kind of person you aspire not to be.

Agreed, he wasn't the best comedian/person in the world, but I saw him on a documentary a few months ago, and he seemed that he loved comedy. He didn't just make non PC jokes, its just that he was (in)famous for the non PC joke.

R.I.P Manning.

Fat and Northern?

Oi! Nothing wrong with being from up t'north and a bit rotund.

Tbh, maybe he was a bit Roy Chubby Brown. I mean, RCB was 100%, but maybe Bernard didn't feel entirely the way his act came across.

He is a fucking brilliant man.

Look past his act, which appeals to his target audience, and you see a nice, friendly man who donates shitloads to charity under aliases and is nice to everyone.

See above. His act is exactly that. An ACT. Thats like wanting an actor to die because he played the role of a baddie.
Idiot.

The number of people saying he deserves to die because he didn't like Mighty Boosh, grow the fuck up.

He worked in the same club for ages, and dedicated his life to the club, and was heartbroken when it was burnt down a few years ago.

Seriously, your worse than what you think he was.

It may be an ACT but who came up with it? Just because you give money to charity doesn't mean you aren't a racist. When he isn't doing his ACT he still says racist things. Thats like giving someone money to make fun of them, which is worse- taking someone's dignity away twice.

Also, past ACT? You mean his current ACT. He is still peddling his 'Black people live in Africa and throw spears.' tripe. How friendly.

i am entitled to my opinion about not liking someone who says racist things to entertain other people. If it is an ACT then he is still an awful person for playing up to people with racist views. Idiot.

A target audience of ignorant zenophobes. Im a big supporter often slighty touchy racial humour (we should all laugh together. yay! peace and love!) the problem was that Bernard and Chubby just aren't funny. I must tell you i did do a glee little gig when I heard the news of his death. Whoopee!

Learn to read, douche. I said if you LOOK past his act, he is a nice friendly man who isn't actually prejudice against anyone. Its just a larger scale of "lol nigga wut" in the Cheesebin or other things. But people benifit from at the same time.

Hoping someone dies because they sacrifice morals to save lives and stuff, tbh I'd rather you died than he did.

doctor_fruitbat
19-06-2007, 01:52 PM
He sacrifices morals to save lives? How exactly? I give to charity, but you don't hear me trying to affirm the views of an audience comprised of ignorant xenophobes. You also haven't told us which charities he donates to. Prove that they are charities that are devoted to causes that run counter to what he preaches publicly and I'll reconsider my views.

And there is a big difference between cleverly playing on racial disharmony and simply making racist jokes that are only funny if you think asians really are a big bunch of pakis. Take the example of Alf Garnett; with him, we were meant to be laughing at him; indeed, the actor used to become very upset when all the racists in the audience sat there agreeing with him. With RCB, we're supposed to be laughing with him, and that makes a big, big difference.

He had happy relations with his black neighbours, sent a sick Asian child he heard about locally on a no-publicity trip to Disneyland, gave money privately to anti-racist groups and was a major benefactor of Jewish charities in Manchester.

You did my hard work. I forgot half of those.

Anyway, before we all got nasty. Bernard Manning wasn't funny, but he still didn't deserve to die. The Royston Vasey(RCBs real name) issue I'm glad we've dealt with.

i think that a lot of people forget that his racist humour was very much of his generation. he was an anachronism in 21st century britain, and despite the fact that i find his humour offensive, i can accept that not everyone finds it as unsavoury as i do.

as much as his opinions may (or may not - i never knew the bloke) conflict with my own, that doesn't necessarily make him a bad person. those of you who said that you're glad he's dead etc. are a bit pathetic really.

Never heard any of his stand-up until now, and not surprising really - he wouldn't have known comedy if it bit him on the arse. All he did was regurgitate some hackeyed one-liners that any idiot in a pub could have made up, and everyone started laughing.

On the subject of his constant protestations that 'a black person being English because they're born here is like a dog being a horse because it's born in a stable' - I rather think that most black people are more a part of modern Britain than he was.
Anyway, what did he think he was? Pure-bred ancient Briton?

Obviously I'm not glad he's dead, but I doubt most people will mourn the loss of his particular brand of 'entertainment'.

i guess the charities he gives money to kind of make him a better person. but all the bad things he has said (and its more than an act, its a mindset) overshadow the money he has given in my opinion.

but its my opinion, you don't have to agree with it. i'm just saying that i don't like a man who is famous for mysogeny and racism. he gives money to charity. fair enough, he's not all bad. he has good relations with other people, even those of different race. isn't that expected? we shouldn't need to congratulate him for having black friends. the charities thing has slightly redeemed him in my eyes, but i still dislike him.

i'm glad its over. sorry to get nasty.

Luna
20-06-2007, 10:21 AM
Giving to charity sort of makes up for it, but I give to charities and I sure as hell wouldn't be allowed to say racist things.

Still, wishing death upon anyone is not something I do regularly, especially for something as trivial for him "cussing" The Mighty Boosh (which some of you are saying, others for the racism thing, which is much fairer, but still a bit extreme in my opinion). That's like wishing Keith Richards would die because he said all modern music is crap.

i was worried that the normal weebl forum attitude would come into play here and people would raise their hypocrisy sticks and start preaching "respect the dead because they are dead"

good job that this man was offensive enough to break that mould for most people. this guy was the epitome of shit, old, tacky britain, and the sooner this generation of racists "but they're not racist it's just because they were raised that way" are flushed out the better

and this charity shit is so redundant. like you can wash away what a prick you are by giving money to people? that's bribery. fucking old man
