View Full Version : An afternoon wasted (though not wasted as planned)

I had planned to spend my afternoon out in the Sun - on my bike and at the beach. It's just one of those days that's too nice to waste indoors, but with just enough lack of obligations to waste outdoors instead. But then something came up. Okay. So I'm not entirely inclined to complain, because this is related to a a job interview, but it has left me with a rather excellent inconvenience that I have a few hours to resolve. So I just can't help a rant. Please forgive me.

I have just received a call from the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee, with a job offer pending an interview. What could I possibly do for Vanoc, you say. Well. They will have a Resource Center going, and I'd seem a natural fit for the job (just an Assistant, mind you, but it's valid experience). All is good so far.

Except their only open interview time is 10AM Thursday. As I moved away from Vancouver, I'd have to rather magically transport myself over there in the early AM if I left this untill then to work out. See, they're located in such a part of Greater Vancouver that I would have to get off the Ferry way down south in Tsawassen at 9AM just to make it in time, even if I were driving. But I'm at the mercy of the Buses, which connect in such a way that I have to set out at 8AM just to make it.

Problem: the earliest Ferry arrives at the terminal at 9AM. I.e. if I were a driver, I'd make it. But I'm not. My obvious (and only) alternative, then, is to arrive by ferry Wednesday afternoon or evening, stay in a hotel or hostel for the night, then arrive on time and at least somewhat rested. I'm seeking work for a reason, though. I have no moneys, and an obscene credit card debt. So the hotel half of the equation is right out of my budget.

Overall it's not a huge conundrum; I just have to spend the next few hours (or less) on the phone to Vancouver's various hostels, seeking one with space for the previous night. I just hope I can do so with only one day of advance notice.

And my other plans are on hold - a bummer since the weather forecast for tomorrow calls for something a bit less pleasant.

Good luck with it, were do you live exactly? (I'm an expat who grew up in BC and still have family there).

Do you know anyone with a car?

No friends/relatives in Vancouver? :)

katox; I have one relative in Vancouver, but she occupies a tiny apartment with no space for something like a sofa for guests to crash on. The best I could have done is buy an air mattress, which would have cost just a bit less than the average hotel room anyway.

As expected, the hostel situation was virtually impossible due to the presence of a major Jazz Festival. I'm kind of surprised I managed to find even a hotel room given how many of those (as well as transportation means to Vancouver) seem to be booked up.

Cpu, I now live in Oak Bay, i.e. "Victoria" to the non-locals (even though it just neighbours the City of Victoria); but untill the end of last month I was a resident of the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Who needs an air matress, just sleep on the floor. Gives you neck pains but it's free. :)

True. But I don't think I would have been completely welcome anyway.

It's all sorted out, though I did in fact not get to waste my afternoon in a completely unproductive manner, so I'll have to save it for the weekend.
