Never a good way to decide on anything. Just sort of shows you as a twat, really.

You can't go wrong with a Fender Strat.

Good for learning on, they look good and they're versatile.

Good for learning on, they look good and they're versatile.Yeah but they don't look even remotely hella cool.

Not like a telecaster, they definately make you look indiehip.

I have one!

Yeah but if you're a crap player, no guitar is going to make you look cool.

Get a strat. You don't want to end up, to quote "The Meaning of Liff", like the guy "who owns all the latest sporting gadgetry and clothing (gold trolley, tee cosies, ventilated shoes, Gary Player- autographed tracksuit top, American navy cap, mirror sunglasses) but is still only on his second golf lesson."

You really don't. Everyone thinks that guy is a twat.

I played a Fender strat once and i really didn't like it. The action was way too high and so was the price.

I learnt on a Squire Strat, and the action was perfect on it. I now play a Les Paul but thats a really bad idea for learning on, necks a bit thick for getting to grips with chords etc.

I started on my dad's Aria strat replica, but then bought myself a Burns Brian May signature. It is the sex.

Then change the action

:eng101:

Engerica used Strats and they were fucking cool.

I could be playing any guitar and still look like a fucking goon, whether it be a Telecaster or a Super-Strat looking Maverick.

That's because I'm in a wimp rock band. We could get our asses kicked by girls. And usually we do.

I learnt on and still play a squire strat for that very reason!

I have black listed both Fender and Vintage for having outragously high action. I bought a vintage and as soon as the novelty of the floyd rose wore off i reallised that it sounded and played like shit. Lowering the action just makes it buzz everywhere. Now i have to get the frets filed down or changed. Fucking stupid guitar.

Get a cheap guitar (of the type you want of course, I.E electric, acoustic) then learn on that, see if you can do it, before spending several hundred on something to "make you look good." Oh and this topic made me think of this.

If I actually owned the squire strat I learned on I'd have kept it, it was awesome. Could have do with a rewire and some nicer pickups, other than that it kicked serious ass.

Well the fender I played just plain sucked I suppose. The thing that really shocked me was that on a £900 guitar Fender couldn't be bothered to put the right control knobs on it (I'm left handed and they were backwards). But the squire has everything left handed.

Lyricaus
24-06-2007, 07:35 PM
Oh get used to the right handed world. I'm left handed, yet being raised in a world with products aimed at right handed people, you adapt. I do most things right handed. Rulers, computer mouse, guitar, etc. Only thing i do left handed is writing and tv remotes. :p

So you once tried out a Fender Strat and you thought the action was too high and it was too pricey. But you learnt on a Fender Strat and continue to play it to this day.

Still confused.

no - I learnt on a squire strat and still play it.

I tried the Fender because I wanted to test a stomp box out and it was the only left handed guitar the shop had.

It wasn't an American made one so maybe that's why it was so bad.

but squire strats are fender guitars.

25-06-2007, 10:35 AM
I think what he's saying is, you'd expect better from their more expensive lines.

If I was gonna buy a fender strat, I'd be an American made one though. I know they're about £200 more, but at least its the "real deal".

LeoZ

My Fender strat was bare cheap but I've never had a proper go on any other type of guitar so I have nothing to compare it to :/

Beh, I rewired and nu-pickup'd my old squire strat but it still played like crap. The guitar itself was hindering the pickups...

People will laugh at you.

02-07-2007, 07:58 AM
Definitely don't get that first one without the dot inlays on the neck. If you're a beginner, you won't get anywhere without them.

(and the positioning of the ones on the second one looks stupid)

Lewiji

Those 2 guitars posted last are shit. Don't even think about buying them.

Okay bit of research led me to see that they're around 100 quid. Any guitar around 100 quid will be shit, but you're gonna get more value for a strat copy than a "metal" styled guitar.

It doesn't specify a body wood so it's gonna be plywood. Your guitar will sound weak and tinny.

It has 24 frets, which on a good guitar is fine, but on a cheap guitar your harmonics will be way out and the intonation will probably never be right.

2 unbranded humbuckers which probably produce a lot of hum anyway, they'll make it sound muddy as hell.

What looks like a plasticy floyd rose copy which I can guarantee will wear down with in a week and cause your guitar to go out of tune when simply playing chords.

Aside from all that, it's a copy of a BC Rich guitar, who's expensive models are shit.

Well I'm learning to play and I can get these rather cheap so it appears like a good idea.

Ledloonus

You may be able to get them cheap, but since you're a beginner good luck trying to tune a floyd rose.

If you must insist on getting a guitar from that site, and you don't want a strat, I'd get the SG.

Being a beginner using Floyd Rose guitars is a HUGE no-no.

So you want the best quality (not looks as you're not gonna be gigging?) for your money so you don't have to buy a new guitar so soon once you've mastered the basics.

X-Ryan-X
02-07-2007, 06:35 PM
You should never go for a guitar for the looks. Take B.C. Rich's lower end guitars. Sure they look awesome, but the body wood used is Agathais(sp?), the cheapest wood there. If you want an awesome looking guitar you need to look at the specs. But at this stage, you shouldn't be majorly hunting for an axe.

I think right at the beginning of the thread someone said they'd ruled out Vintage because of the action... My SG copy is Vintage, the action on that is fine. Sounds good clean, whack a bit of distortion on it and it makes even my shoddy playing sound loads better. It's a cracking little guitar for £150 quid. It's quite small with a fairly thin neck, so there isn't the problem of chords being a pain in the arse. I've got tiny girl hands (what with being a girl and that) and I couldn't do barre chords until I got the SG because my Strat was huge and my fingers didn't fit.

By the way, I do apologise if I sound retarded. I've only been playing for just over a year and a half so I could be talking bollocks:)

Yes that was me - But I think it's just because it has a floyd rose. For how much I paid for it it's not that bad, I quite like it now.
