OK, last night, I was watching "Catface" through my speakers. Now, a few seconds after the introductory jingle, the sound just went "foom". I've reset my computer, that doesn't work, checked that all cables are secure in the back, they are, and tried 4 of my headphones to see if they work. They don't.
A system restore has been done, but that doesn't aid me. The sound card that I'm using is:
C-Media AC97 Audio Device
There are no sounds playing from the computer, not even system sounds. Is this a hardware, or a software problem? Anyone help me identify it?

Right click my computer > Properties > hardware tab > device manager
Sound, video and game controllers
C-Media AC97 Audio Device
Device status?
Properties tab
Whats listed there?
I cant suggest much other than its died. perhaps open up the case and look for somethng like this on the motherboard:

Look for that C logo somewhere.
Anything look fried?
edit: Dont know if this helps, but try using sound recorder to see if the mic input is still working. Could perhaps help diagnose the problem (drivers or hardware or whatever)

I honestly think that perhaps it has bit the dust, but I'll have a further look into it. I'll open the case up ASAP.
EDIT: Microphone works. Hmm.

C-Media is your problem. My sound went all funny with it as well. Try and see if there are any drivers on their website.

Tried that, didn't seem to work. I'll have a snoop around for other sound drivers, but I'm doubtful.

OK, last night, I was watching "Catface" through my speakers.
there's your first problem: should have used the monitor for that.
actual advice:
if your sound card's kaboomed you may have onboard sound - but looking at that screen shot it's not dectected, you'd have to go into your bios to turn it on then you could use that for sound.
If you don't have a sound card in there then you are already using the onboard sound, in which case you'll have to buy a new soundcard. You can get really cheap ones if you're not an audiophile, if you want top quality sound though I'd suggest a creative x-fi.

Hmm....here's a few questions that might help you diagnose the problem.
1) Are your speakers plugged in?
2) Is your computer plugged in?
3) Are you using Windows ME? If so, throw your computer into a pool of acid because ME blows.
4) Do you like ice cream?
I hope this helped. =)
Edit: Lol at the joke above me. I just figured it out xD
