View Full Version : Certain sites timing out

Got a feeling there is an incredibly simple solution to this that I'm not getting.
Hasn't been like this all day; just recently. Some sites just get stuck at connecting and time out, and I know the problem is at my end for a fact.
My ISP is NTL (Well I guess its virgin media now, but the only thing that seems to of changed is the name)
I've tried both Firefox and IE, Rummaging around in Tools > Options, doing the 'unplug modem for 30 seconds' method, a virus scan, restarting pc and even a system restore, all to no avail. Even as I'm typing this, the ad thats at the top right of the screen has timed out.
I've googled around and found my links that would probably help fix this little problem of mine, and ironically, none of them load.
I have a strong feeling I'm making a mountain out of a molehill here, but its frustrating as all of my regular sites wont load.
Scrap that. After over 3 hours of having this problem, it floats away after I request help on it.

hey that's been happening to me a lot recently too, and my ISP is Virgin too...
Must be virgin then.

ntl/virgin are shit
happens to me all the time
solution: get a new isp... we're moving to sky soon... dunno if that's any better though heh

lol
i quick google on "sky broadband reviews" suggests it isn't any better
one even specifically says it's worse than his old isp... ntl
whoops :/

ANGRY BUMP: Happening again; this time its been like it since yesterday and is stopping me from enjoying such services as Steam, YouTube and other online related sites and fancies. Done the usual song and dance (Scan, restart, sys restore etc...)
I don't feel like simply waiting for the cause of this to decide when its pissed me off enough to go away like last time. It's not so much the fact that its not letting me access these sites thats worrying, its the fact that I haven't got a damn clue what sort of problem I'm dealing with, and if it's Virgins end, well fuck them.
Heres the kick in the teeth, I've googled the problem and found many hopeful links, and none of the sites load. How fantastic!
If the problem does go away by itself then thats great, meaning some guy in Virgin in fucking around with his computer (probably true too).
But it doesn't seem like thats going to happen, and the only other thing I can think of doing is reformatting, which is a no thanks.
So guys, anything?

Use Google cache?
Anyway, VM's service status page is at http://status-cable.virginmedia.com/vmstatus/summary.do, so it's worth checking there. Cruel irony if that doesn't load, eh? ;)

Google cache wont load and neither will Virgin.
Cruel irony indeed.

I get this problem quite a lot, but only on my computer and only on certain sites. I'm afraid I can't be much help, as the only cure I've found is to wait until it starts working again. I'm on Tiscali, but it works fine on my Mum's laptop and computer, it's just mine with the trouble.

I'm on Virgin and its being a right pain at the moment. Sites keep on coming and going, and we lost internet completely yesterday. Doesn't seem much you can do really.

Fixed itself again. Still not sure if the problem is mine or Virgins end.
