Windows XP <-> Vista Networking Woes.

We recently bought a new laptop with Windows Vista on it. We're currently trying to get it to connect with our other computers, which are Windows XP. We've managed to get it connected to the internet, via the router that we use for the rest of our network, but the new laptop can't see the old network.

Can anybody help me out with how to get it to see the other computers?

Have you set the network's workgroup on the Vista machine to the same as the old machines?

Found the solution. It was that bloody Norton prepackaged crap. I uninstalled that, and now everything's pretty much fine. The only problem now, is that the XP computers can't access the files on the Vista one. Any help?

I can count on both hands the number of people I've told to remove that shite from their PC over the last few months. Is Norton in bed with Dell and HP?

The security on Vista file sharing is annoyingly tight. Go into the Network and Sharing center and check that File Sharing is on and Password Protected Sharing is off

Where do I find the function for Password Protected Sharing?

Also, I installed AVG. I would have put Avast on, but it didn't work properly. Is that okay?

Avast should work on vista, it worked fine for me on a compaq laptop with home basic on it.
avast is much nicer than avg and i reckon it does a great job. The best paid one would have to be NOD32 - low resources needed and excellent detection.
