Yeah they are great that has been a given for a while...the new album isn't really a fluent album although it has it's great moments. The first two really do it for me. The debut is full of crazyness and the occasional trademark squeel. "WAR" rules. Toxicity was impressive too. They put some nice melody amongst their thrashings...the title track and songs like "shimmy" and "chop suey" rock pretty hard. Nuff said.

They suck to the major, like skum101 only worse.
Seriously, they suck and people who listen to them are just trying to be hard. Their music is not exceptional and their weird is on the wrong side of the wall.

Trying to be hard? They aren't even a hard band, at first I was like, oh I'm cool now, but that was 2 years ago...now I just appreciate their creativity...which by the way, they DO have.

System are a good band IMO, becausethey dont just do that thrash metal shit.
If you listen to their music you can hear lots of different influences, such as jazz, folk, Eastern European music (theyre all descended from Azerbaijanis, as I recall) popping up every now and again in their stuff, and it adds a nice variety to the modern stereotype Korn bullshit.
The mix of styles that SOAD use is brilliant. A truely inspirational mix of genres. Armainian(sp?) folk music with thrash anyone?
Has any one heard Serjat? It's a world music project by the SOAD frontman. Im really interested but havent found it yet.

Wow that sounds so familiar yet I can't quite remember where I saw it...maybe I'll go look for some information and edit the post later with a link...
Sidenote: [murray] is right about Korn

Three albums without selling out is quite a feat in today's market, especially since none of them were really underground. Go System of a Down for being cool since 1998.

Never even heard of them before Reading (I know I keep going on about it, but...).
Listening more & more to them, you find more interesting aspects about the music - whether the style/genre, or that lyric you couldnt understand (meaning or otherwise).
There's more to this band than just the thrashing guitars.

course there is! there are hordes of bands who jump around and play heavy, but none with the err...finesse of soad. They are original. That says a lot.

I'm a death metal fan now. First got into SOAD 3 years ago. I listened to their first album again tonight, bloody awesome. They were my favourite band for ages. Still not heard "Steal This Album" yet. It's only B-sides anyway.

steal this album isnt b sides, they're outtakes which never made it onto toxicity. and if it was their b sides it would be awsome anyhoo. on steal this album the songs end up sounding more or less the same (the "linkin park effect";))

SOAD are my favourite metal band. I actually love every song they have done, which I can only say about a few bands. The first album is definitely the best, and Toxicity is very cool and experimental, you can tell they're stretching their creative wings a bit, and Steal this album is alright, but nowt special. A couple of awesome tracks (IEAIEO, ADD, Roulette). They arwe just so talented, and the way it all just sort of slots together. My favourite part of their music is the Lyrics I think.

Actually, serj was from lebanon and then moved to NYC and found the drummer, but back then they were SOIL, I found that out @ some bio on SOAD.

hmmmm ok let me clear this up soad are all armenian, (as am i :) ) 2 of em were born in lebanon like a lot of armenians, (this is because of some nasty history involving turkey but i wont go into that) and they rule, saw em twice at brixton and went to ozzfest to see them and tool

I don't that much about SOAD's history, but I've listened to them for about 3 yrs(and counting) now... and I'm probably listening to them the next 3 yrs. btw, SOAD ain't death metal or whatever u wanna call it, they try to send a message with their songs... try looking at their website and you'll see what I'm talking about
The album Toxicity was superb. Off the wall, good rhythms and quality lyrics. Some of their other stuff all seems to lump into one a bit though, though to be fair I've spent a lot more time listening to Toxicity than anything else so I should maybe give their other albums more of a chance.

Yeah the first album blurs like crazy the first time, but after a few more listens you realize it has just as many super awesome songs as toxicity "WE WILL FIGHT THE HEATHENS WE WILL FIGHT THE HEATHENS!!!"

I fink the drummer has an amazin drumkit (anyone who has seen it will agree with me) and he is pretty amazin himself, however i think their music sounds like Bhangra with an electric guitar. The singer is demented, the band are twisted, how can people like them?
leeroy

the kits nice but hes got nothing on danny careys kit, tool drummer now there is a stunning kit. the lead singer serj was a teacher.

Yeah.....really? I didn't think that sounded like Serj. Anyway, Marmalade is good.

Tis one of the great SOAD myths that song. I've heard all sorts of crazy rumours and theories (I.E It was a different band but serj was there for no reason) But in the end it's been cleared up when Daron Malakian was on some radio show and someone asked him about it, and the answer about rabbit joint was born. You can tell it's not SOAD because of the guitars mainly, and the drumming also. The style is very different to SOAD.
Eventually I wanna get a beard like Shavo Oadjinan. And shave my hair off. THat is the best look you could ever have

Wooo! Go SOAD!!!
I like the Toxicity album the best. Shimmy is deffinately my fave song on it and the thing that gets me every time I listen to it is the drums. Does that guy have three hands or something?! It's freakin' awesome! :D
