Is there an easy way to change the startup so that some of the programs that show up in the lower right corner as icons don't auto load every time XP is booted up?

Start > run > msconfig
You can change what runs at startup there (under the startup tab).

Autoruns (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx)
Much more user friendly, easier to use etc, tells you the name of the program and company, and when it starts.
Sysinternals make other great stuff too like process explorer and appmon.

Ah, that would've come in handy. I ran into some errors on startup after disabling some of the logitech software for the mouse & keyboard, so I reinstalled it from the disc. Last time I shutdown I got an error pop-up, but the system shutdown before I could really read it. I think I might reformat it with XP in about a month, and leave the logitech stuff off, along with the hp stuff and nTune (use rivatuner instead).

I've found that when I do it on msconfig they always come back. So I use RegSupreme. You can stop things starting up on bootup and do other cool things like clear out your registry, clear up your add/remove etc...

That will give you the trial version.

There are a handfull of free tools that will do all of that, no trials, no cash involved, just altruism.
Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
