What are your favourite British bands, singers or artists?
Hmm, I feel as though I should write more here but it'd all be arbitrary nonsense anyway.

Currently, Sikth. Not that their music is characteristically British. They're just amazingly talented.

I'm sure logically there are hundreds of British artists I like yet for some reason the only ones I can think of are Roots Manuva, Braintax, Mystro and Led Zeppelin

Wow, I'm ashamed at how few of these bands I've heard of. I suppose it's why I started the thread though.
I'm a big fan of the original punk bands - things like The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Adicts but I also love The Cure, The Specials, ELO and Adam & the Ants.

Also, I second ELO. My favourite ELO tracks: Mr Blue Sky and The Diary of Horace Wimp.

I think for me the best british band has to be a dance act. Dance music is like, one of the very few genres where britain really leads the way, I think (excepting Trance which is all dutch). So for me it comes down to Leftfield, who created the only genre that manages to walk equidistant between "intelligent" dance music and club stompers (progressive house), or Way Out West, who take that sort of thing and make it even better by throwing in breakbeats and synth pads.
However, I think really it's no contest for me. Faithless will always be my favourite band, so them being british, it's a bit of a no-brainer.

Well, if I was to choose beteen effing james blunt and effing razorlight I wouldnt because they both suck. John lennon was shite until he got shot, basically for britain silence is the sweetest music of all.

Cinematic Orchestra are British-based according to wikipedia, and they're awesome. I'd add The Beatles, Muse, and Catatonia too, with dressing of The Zutons and The Go! Team. Bonobo is pretty good too. Not the monkeys. The musician.

Radiohead
Faithless
Beatles

There are many other British bands that are really good but if we are going for best

Deep Purple. They're so incredibly British.
Also Orange Goblin, who're also incredibly British in the sense that they're perpetually drunk.
Oh and they both make really really good music.

Led Zeppelin
The Clash
Pinkfloyd (or Pink Floyd, I forget which)

the ultimate epitome of everything british, plus their songs are excellent: the kinks.
not my favourite, but i tend not to have favourites in a ranked order, but a smörgåsbord of favourite things.
anyway, others are:
muse, black sabbath, mike oldfield (artist, not band), pink floyd, the cure, the damned, the shadows, the who, david bowie (again, not a band), the clash, joy division/new order...
i should really stop listing now.

Mogwai, (older) Idlewild, Biffy Clyro, Aereogramme, Mogwai again.
There are no good English bands.
also in terms of musicness it doesn't get much more British than The Kinks.

I dunno if that's quite true. We have led the way in many other genres and played an important part in the development of many more.
Anywah, after seeing them at Wembley MUSE are probably my favourite band. But best of all time? Probably the Beatles or the Kinks.

Swing and a miss!
Contrariness aside though, BSP are pretty good. As are Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, Oceansize, 65daysofstatic, and a load of other English bands. What can I say, I'm a patriot.
People in Planes and Mclusky are also good. Even if they are welsh.

Placebo are british based, and despite Brian's mother being like French and Dad being American (probably wrong, it's been a long time since I read their FAQ), his band is based in Britain and this is where they started playing. Technically, you could argue that Jimi Hendrex is a British artist too as he moved to Britain to get famous.

The british stole dance music from detroit and made it their own. Personally I am a big fan of Roni Size - especially in his Reprezent years. It still sounds pretty fresh, but at the time, it was revolutionary
