do any of you know how to get a Static IP address when connecting to the internet by DSL provided by BT. My friend has a server which needs a static IP to be able to do web-server stuff. its running Linux Debian if any of you have any ideas it would be great!!

I don't think it's possible manually, as the IP is assigned at the BT service. Get him/her to phone BT, and ask if they have a static IP service, usually ISPs provide it for an extra charge.

If he doesn't want to pay you can get programs that update the domains pointers automatically. They run in the background, and when you connect sends the info to the DNS provider.

BT charge for them? Sheesh. I got mine free with Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.net.uk/index.cfm?id=bbhome).
Anywho, yes, Lewiji40k is right (doesn't surprise me ;)). I use No-IP myself (http://www.no-ip.com). A larger list can be found at http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Internet/Servers/Address_Management/Dynamic_DNS_Services/
