The Poker Den

There just isn't enough places here to talk about poker - and I know for a fact there are plenty of regular posters here that are poker sharks, so this be the forum poker haven.

It's basically a place for us all to brag, inform of success, inform of competitions we've won entry/bought straight into and tell us about brilliant hands we've won as well as our bad beats. I will post the odd poker tip from my own experience, and if you have your own - post away. The last part of this thread is for me to post my own poker career.

I would also like to be able to arrange some private sit-and-go's for forum members. I'd need to know whther it ould have to be play money, or if there is enough real money interest.

September 07' Big Win - Qualified to Live Birmingham Virgin Poker Festival

The month didn't start so hot. I lost most of the events I entered. I'm a player that works on confidence, so when I lose it - I can find myself in trouble. I had one good win in the first week though, collecting just over a hundred quid from Skypoker - recouping all my losses with a good few quid profit.

September the 11th spelled my second biggest win this year though. I finished 2nd from a field of 580 players to win my place at the restricted Virgin Poker Festival held in late November. I'm chuffed to bits, because it'll be my first shot at a REAL live game. I've played in casinos, but this is deep-stacks with BIG prizes, and it's spread over two days.I'll be polishing up my sunglasses for that one.

Tonight I am playing in a qualifier to the WSOOP (World Series of Online Poker), which is a $5,000,000 game. Long way to go though, because it looks like a feidl of over 700 with only 10 places winning a ticket.

More to come.

Jonnys Poker Tips #1
The Negreanu Small-ball

The basic concept of small-ball is thusly; to portray the image of a maniac player (an extreamly loose and ultra-aggressive player), while what you're actually doing is playing the maths.

The main objective, that will see your stack creeping up, is the blind steal. To do this the "small ball" way, you want to be stealing as many blinds as you can, while taking minimal risk.

So lets say you're a place or two off the button. Blinds are 25/50, you've just been dealt...let's say Ks 10s. Nobody has bet before you, you're staring at the button, small blind and big blind. A smart bet here would be in the region of 200. In small-ball, you're looking for most your pre-flop bets to be around 4-5x the big blind. This makes it so that the bet is the perfect distance between being enough to scare of those with mediocre hands - but also gives you wiggle room. Every now and again, you're going to get caught by a monster, but since you've only commited a few hundred to the pot and can fold. You can't use this ALL the time though. Silly raises with 7 3 off will only get you intro trouble.

The second big concept - defend your blinds. You NEED to give the image that you're a terror to play against. Make the table scared of you and you've got them in the position every poker player dreams of. They'll be clutching at straws while you're taking all their stack, and by the time they realize what's happening it's often too late. Like before though, you can;t get silly. You need possibilities to defend your blinds. Suited semi-connectors, low pockets, anything that can bail you out. From there on, you need to find their weakness and exploit. Be ruthless, but cunning. Theres no good in stealing the blokes 3-4 seats away from you's blinds if you're going to have your own stolen.

The next major point is to keep with the game plan. You need to carry on what you've been doing all the way through. Keep hammering at them, make the entire table hate you. Remember that alot of this tact is about odds, so if you keep hammering away - the odds WILL keep your stack trickling over.

Finally, a major point i'll give you is to NEVER, EVER....EVER show your hand. The point of all this is so that nobody will ever truly know what you have.

So lets recap.

Play loose, but not with total trash.
Steal as many blinds as you can, always with 4-5x raises.
Pinpoint weaknesses after the flop to hammer home the advantage.
Keep with it, don't lose confidence.
Keep everyone guessing.

Good good. It might be abit though, it'd be nice if there could be a good few members of the forum.

Update on how that game went...

Finished 2nd, won entry into a game with a prize pool of nearly $1,000,000. I was doing so well, was about 10 minutes of play from the bubble (about $380), and suffered a massive bad beat..

QQ....flop, A Q 3 with no possible flush....end up all-in...yup...he has AA..

Ouch :(

that's pretty nasty

I entered my first tourne this summer, a £30 freeze out riley's, so nothing spectacular. came 18th out of 66 so I was happy enough, though I was short stack for a large part of it. I was lucky enough to get pocket rocket twice and won all in both times, but got beat with pocket queens

since i've had a summer of doing nothing, and the fact that sky has recently been installed, i've ended up watching a fair bit of poker and getting seriously into. if only i had the bankroll :p

We played a few games in the common room, not exactly high stakes but still entertaining. Ended up piling up about £5 of winnings (blinds were 10p, so it took a while to get there), then lost the vast majority of it in one poor hand :(

One big top though; organise a home game. If you play alot online - sure you might not win all the time, but you're gaining experience. When you play your mates, you'll notice how much of an improvement it's had on your game.

Tell me about it. Went to an 11 man tournament at a mate's last Friday. Came forth, but the experience was utterly invaluable
