what is it, what is an ftp client,



and anyone knowof a feb hosting service that allows self-installed cgi scripts.

FTP=File transfer protocol

It's the method of transferring files from one computer to another. You use a client like AceFTP or CuteFTP to access the ftp address, which then displays the files in an explorer like interface. It's most commonly used to upload websites to the machines that they are hosted on.

Ok :p

FTP is a way of moving files from one computer to another computer. You use an ftp program to move the files.

Easy enough? :D

i use SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com/), its reliable and free

Ok.. just see it this way:

There's a banana in Africa and he has a folder called "wee" on his pc.

He uses a FTP program (I use FlashFXP, not free) to make sure other people can download and upload stuff from the server.

There's a clown in England and he also has a FTP program.

He can use the program to look inside the banana's folder and download stuff from it.

Basic enough?

You don't need a FTP program to view FTP's (I believe IE can view them if you feel like waiting about 15 minutes :rolleyes: ) but ftp programs are very handy..

Kind of.

Websites are basically computers that send out the pages when a browser says 'hey, i want to see this and this'. So an FTP sticks the files on the computers in the first place.
