Did anyone else watch this last night? New sketch show by the co-writer of Look Around You, also seen as Duane Benzie in Spaced and Pete in Shaun of the Dead, amongst other things.

Personally, I thought it was one of the better sketch shows we've had recently. It's a half hour assault on your senses with some absolutely hilarious bouts of silliness. It's not hugely subtle, with obvious parodies of the Cillit Bang adverts and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (Hi! I'm Derek Bum!), but in a way I quite like that about it. His impressions are surprisingly good, although I suppose they are more caricatures than impressions.

One thing I was particularly impressed by was the use of colour and film to really imitate the things they were making fun of. For example, the gaudy colours of commercials and shopping channels made it that little bit funnier because it looked exactly like those things. Especially good was the take on compensation lawyers adverts.

Anyway, it was fantastic, and the fast paced and erratic nature of the show suggests to me that it won't grow as stale as the most modern sketch shows, with a few exceptions (gay sherlocke holmes, trial-and-error newsreader). Looking forward to next weeks episode.

The best part for me was in the "finding a wife sketch" - when she's walking down the isle and the voice-over goes, "she's at least a 7 today".

I've been laughing about that all day.

Haha, yeah, I loved that one.

I thought it was embarrassingly crap.

Care to explain why?

I can see why you might, but you got my back up with that simple statement which seemed designed to get people's backs up by being contrary.

I quite liked it, but as most sketch shows do it will get stale. It's the law of the damn universe.

I thought almost every sketch in the show had an absolutely brilliant idea behind it or was a fantastic concept but only a small handful were pulled off particularly well. I loved the Cillit Bang spoofs and the Elephants & Trains magazine ad but other than that it all felt a bit bland or something. It almost seems like the ideas from Look Around You without the actual gags, as though he needs Robert Popper to write with him to kind of ground him.

All the same, it is among the best of the recent sketch shows and it doesn't look like it'll just be the same thing every week which can kill a sketch show.

So THAT's where I saw him before.

The HIGNFY episode with the "Guy who created look around you".

Tarr.

I'm pretty sure I sure Popper's name in the credits, not sure what for though.

I thought that on paper, all of the ideas are a great set up for a laugh, you can imagine them kicking it around the office and the concepts being really funny, it just didn't work on screen for me.

Loved it.

Have to say that one of the things I enjoyed the most was the lack of a laughter track.

Oh and "The Worst Man"

I loved it.
I especially liked the Kitchen gun and the acting classes with Michael Caine. Can't wait for next weeks ^^

Haha, michael caine acting classes were probably the best, thinking about it. The sausages/cigar thing was hilarious.

I'm tempted to watch this being as I've heard of him and recognise him from Black Books and Shaun Of The Dead, but sketch shows seem a bit old hat now tbh.

Me too.

I dislike these type of shows especially. They lack so much creativity. They have no original style, cheap unfunny and on-the-nose remakes of adverts. They can't even be arsed to think up a proper name for it. I only laughed at the 'Elephant and Trains' magazine but even that had much more potential to be funny. Overall, it's severely inferior to the likes of Mitchell & Webb, Little Britain and Dead Ringers.

Little Britain
Series 1, agreed, but no way in hell are the likes of series 2 onwards of Little Britain better than this. That show died after series 1.

Am I the only person who didn't find Little Britain funny ever? Same with Fonejacker. To me it's nice to see someone on TV who genuinely is funny. He and Robert Popper should make more Look Around You though. Or something along those lines. Maybe other school programme spoofs. Like those english ones with the book adaptations and then some kind of ridiculously happy person explaining spelling and grammars. Twould be good.

I think I chuckled at the first episode of Little Britain. Then as far as I'm concerned it could have fucked off back to the shitter where it came from.

I really liked it (Sherlock Holmes was the only bit I didn't like), but I wouldn't get my mates to watch it.

This programme is barenaked laughs.

He's great in other stuff too, like Spaced and Black Books and Look Around You.

No you aren't.

"In the court, he asked me what litigation meant..."
"Fair enough, I didn't know what litigation meant. But I've bought a book and I will read it... on my next holiday."

Is it just me or was that like 20 times better this week?

It lacked alot of the feeling of "this is a good idea but they haven't pulled it off very well" of last week's. I actually laughed out loud quite a few times, though some jokes got a bit over-used. Nice to see it's not all going to be repeated stuff each week which can be the death of a sketch show.

I honestly can't decide whether I preferred it or not.

On the one hand, some of the things I really liked about it - the fast pace, the visual and aural assault of the programme, weren't really present this week, but on the other hand, the jokes were better. I loved Dickens Fruit Corner.

Although Actors' masterclass was much worse this week.

Oh, and almost forgot, Cypress Hill ft. Elvis!

I missed it the first week and missed the first five minutes this week, but from what I saw I really enjoyed it, some good characters and features in there. The baby thing reminded me of Look Around You in a way, probably why I enjoyed that part so much.

That bit was incredibly like Look Around You. As were a few other bits. Such as last weeks 'Elephant and Trains magazine'.

It's similar to Look Aroud you in it's entirety, because it's all pastiche's and parodies. The reason this show does that sort of thing so well is basically that they get the way it is filmed just right, normally.

I actually saw that part in passing and it did make me laugh. It still lacks the individual style that I usually associate with good programmes though.

I like it every week - some sketches are VERY Look Around You, while others are almost Dead Ringers, but done in a quirkier style.

I can't stop laughing at his face though, especially after his cameos in Spaced and Black Books and Shaun of the Dead.

Seriously, does no-one else think that the into deserves a slap?

Yes. I also can't stand the bits with the acting classes. But I do like the Butterfield sketches.

The acting classes ones are brilliant depending on who he is doing. Al Pacino and Michael Caine were just hilarious in every way. Kevin Spacey one was a faultless impression, but the jokes weren't very funny. The Ralph Feinnes one I just didn't find funny at all. Apart from the "It sounds how it's spelled" gag, but that's just an easy shot, really.
