Well i am a filthy smoker (please save your stone throwing and tomato throwing untill after you have read this)

Today, i was in a car crash. Well actually a van crash. I was sat in the back of a van that has a table fixed between seats. The driver of our van ploughed into the back of another van and the force of it threw me off my seat and straight into the table. By now you may have learnt that i was not wearing a seat belt. This is a lesson. Although it was unlucky, i had only just undone it to take my coat off. Anyway, if's and but's aside, imagine someone swinging a baseball bat as hard as they possibly can and hitting you in the stomach. Ever been winded? I swear i have never felt anything like this. I couldnt breath at all, then after a few secs of trying, i could only get the tiniest bit of air into my lungs, not enough, by this point i was attemting to scream and making strange noises as i couldnt breath in or out properly. I collapsed anyway and within ten mins after that i was fine except my stomach hurt quite alot, but not enough for me to think it would kill me.

3 hours on and my stomach and back are sore, especially my stomach, i have this feeling that i am still slightly winded and its extremely bruised to touch. Due to the accident happening at work, my immediate thought was, im going to get a bollocking because i didnt have my seat belt on, so we all agreed to tell insurence and everyone else i was ok now.

Since ive been home, i searched the internet for blunt abdominal trauma, and see it can be quite serious. So i should probably go to hospital to check im not bleeding internally or something. Thing is, im looking at a 3-6 hour wait (not unusual in a hospital) and because i cant smoke on the hospital grounds, i would just much rather sit at home than not have a fag for ages while im checked over!!! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLY STUPID LIZ!!! And yes, it really is isnt it? But how many other people are going to avoid going to the hospital because they dont want to quit smoking for hours, do you think it might cost lives? Maybe its different in other hospitals, but at mine its quite a long way to actually get off the hospital grounds.

It just makes me wonder how many other smokers are as silly as me.

Anyway i hope im ok. Obviously if the pain gets worse im going to have to go, but untill then i'll sit at home and smoke for a while longer.

In another way, i actually AGREE with why smoking has been banned from the grounds. If your ill and going to the hospital, you dont want to walk into a smoke filled doorway and who would? It just could be a closer spot where its not going to bother anyone else. If i knew that was the case i would be there as i type this, but unfortunately it has stopped me going completely. I dont think i am the only one.

If i die tonight, it wont be the accident, it will be my addiction to smoking.

I hadn't nthought of this before, but I'm going to add it to my list of reasons for trying to quit smoking currently. It's not a very good list tbh, it mostly revolves around me having money for drugs by not spending them on tabs....

Also, are you okay?

seriously shook up from it really. I honestly thought i was going to die when i couldnt breath. it all happened so fast that i didnt really know what had happened to hurt me so much. It was pretty horrible. Glad im alive though!

Christ!!
Why dont you phone up a duty doctor to come to your house sooner rather than waiting for hours to get a medical opinion?
This sounds quite serious, you may have internal bruising or something.
Hope you feel better as soon as!!

p.s this'll mean you can smoke whilst waiting for a doctor in your house :) naughty!

Simply put, you are an idiot. You could have all sorts of things wrong.
your intestines could have ruptured.
You could have damaged one or both kidneys
You could have internal bleeding.
And various other things too numerous to mention.

In short, GO TO HOSPITAL!!!

If you've suffered blunt force trauma (I think) to your abdomen, smoking can't be a great idea due to possible damage to your lungs?
I'm no doctor though.

Wow.

Liz, I can't believe your first thought being in the accident at all wasn't "must get to a hospital", let alone not going because you'll just feel uncomfortable for a couple hours.

I'm an ex-smoker and I know what a bastard it can be going without, but honestly? There's more important things than feeding the monkey on your back.

leave the cigs at home, buy a pack of gum, go to the hospital and deal with it...

i have found it that if you don't have any cigs... you can't smoke them... it worked for me. when i have cigs on me... i would smoke them... if i didn't i wouldn't smoke them... crazy huh?

after going to the hospital quit cigs for good... and switch to a 2-3 cigars a week habit...

i have been smoking cigars for about 5 years or so... lately i haven't smoked anything for just about 2 weeks... no fits... just sayin'

I would also say definately go to hospital before you start pissing / shitting blood. An impact like that has very likely burst a few blood vessels at least = internal bleeding which can lead to increased pressure inside your body, causing your lungs to collapse. (recently had a first aid refresher course).

Liz. This is spot on. The other danger with this is blood loss, i.e shock and the big sleep. Not a nice thought but that is why, when you are in an accident, you go to bloody hospital.

Also Razielskorp - how many times have ya taken the first aid course? I have done it three times. Easy stuff but darn handy in a crisis i'll tell ya.

Being winded is an awful feeling, but yeah, go to the hospital you silly girl :)

Liz
06-10-2007, 10:25 AM
My point was actually to say, it just put me off going in the first place. I actually rang NHS direct shortly after i posted here and asked for advice, they told me to go to hospital, i ignored their advice.... accidentally!!! I was gonna go but fell asleep on the sofa (car crashes can tire you out it seems), but hey, at least i woke up! Maybe i was making a subconcious suicide attempt, who knows. (just to add, upon waking i imediately smoked a cig without a second thought....)

The 20 hour wait puts me off just as much as smoking does.

As for how i feel this morning, well fine really. Its only after a self examination that i realise it hit bang on the solar plexus, so no wonder i couldnt breath. Its looking nice and bruised anyway, but apart from that i feel like nothing ever happened. Infact im going wakeboarding this afternoon to practice my backflips, and my main concerns are water temperature, and how long i have to wait till the next time i have sex.

Thanks for the concern though, and the insults, i'll sure let you know if i die. :)

(stav, the hospital nurses scream at you if seen smoking in the car park, believe me, i was on the recieving end once and have been terrified to even go near the hospital ever again!)

We didnt lie, just not tell them everything. Insurence ask about injuries incase i had wanted to make a claim against the driver at fault (the driver at fault was the one we ran into, he had missed a gear and stopped dead infront of us) Also i dont want a bollocking (or sacking) from work because i wasnt wearing a seat belt at the time. And im not a money grabbing twat.

Even if it turned out i was seriously injured, i could probably make a claim anyway, alot of the time injuries appear hours or days after the crash has happened. (whiplash anyone?)

Sorry to bang on about it, but you should still go in to get yourself checked out.
yeah i'll go to the docs on monday. ok? happy?! you lot are like my bloody mum jeez. *slams bedroom door*

Seriously, this made me think of the Darwin awards a bit. If it's something external and you don't like hospitals, it's your choice to live with the scars. But something internal that could possibly have been fatal when you have a kid to look after as well as yourself? [/serious_cat]

Sorry, but really, you won't die if you have to reject your cravings for a couple of hours.

also, i don't think they can sack you for not wearing a seat belt

for lying to the insurance company on the other hand...

I worked as a painter this summer and had an accident with a ladder. I didn't secure it properly, and went straight into the ground. My knee hurtin' bad, paint everywhere. I rang my boss, and my boss and his boss came to the spot. They told me to go to the doctor, it didn't matter weither it was my fault. The most important thing is that you get it checked.

i went to hospital so you can all shut the fuck up ok. ive got your point now, really honestly, seriously, i know i am a thick fucking bitch who is a bad parent. Please keep on telling me, its doing wonders for my self esteem.

I'M ABSOLUTELY FINE, THEY DIDNT EVEN SCAN ME, JUST LOOKED AT ME LIKE; 'so what, you were winded, we've all been winded, get over it'

actually the reason i went was because i tore half the ligaments in my ankle wakeboarding today. I just mentioned that i'd been in a car crash yesterday and they had a look and a feel and that was that.

nice one.

Hospitals are generally full of people who want you to get better Liz, getting better (it is widely accepted) concerns both biology and good state of mind. Thus they'll usually let you smoke in the car-park. :)

I know this from experience, I've worked in a hospital for the last 10 months.

(sorry for getting angry, but there is only so many times i can be called thick and be ok about it) (i also realise that there is a relative amount of stupidness on my part for not going for a stupid reason, but fucking hell.)

As for the smoking, everyone was doing it in the car park, and i as i couldnt walk to the next chair let alone outside, i wasnt too bothered. Just in pain.

no more wakeboarding for me this year. The water was so cold today, i got straight back up on my board after twisting my ankle. When i got out i couldnt feel my feet if i stabbed them with a knife. (Very very cold water)

Only when i got in the shower, my ankle thawed out and i looked at it and wondered why i hadnt noticed it was twice its usual size! ouch.

Gonna miss the boarding though.

snus? whats that? ANd yes, snuff tobacco is not to my taste really.

I think overall, the main reason i didnt go after the crash was because i felt ok on the whole. If i had have been in pain, which ironically saw me go straight there without passing go after i did my ankle yesterday, i would have gone.

My ankle really hurts now, i hate torn ligaments! Everyone looks at you like; 'Ack its not broken, what are you complaining about?'

Thing is i cant walk on it, only hop, my 3 year old wants stuff all the time, i cant drive, and walking on train tracks every day all day isnt comfortable for ankles even when there is nothing wrong with them!
