I know that there's a fair few comic fans on this here forum, so I come asking for help. I have a wishlist of stuff that I would mind picking up. What I'd like to know is your opinions on them. So, in no particular order, here's the list:

Death Note 1
The Watchmen
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Civil War
The Goon 1
The Amazing Screw-On Head
Black Metal
If anyone else has any lists they want to post, go ahead.

Watchmen is hands down one of the best graphic novels ever written. No question.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is pretty good but the writing may bother you slightly. If you like batman you'll like it.

Civil war, or what I saw of it, was a bit rubbish.

Also, you should read The Long Halloween. Probably the best Batman comic there is.

I haven't read too many graphic noverls, but I enjoyed Marvels, the story is quite interesting but the art is main attraction, some beautiful paintings of classic marvel events.

Anything by Gaiman particularly the Sandman books.

Another one of his that I loved was Black Orchid.

Haven't read any new stuff in years though.

Also anything punisher I guess? "Welcome Back, Frank" was the first comic I ever read.

The Gantz manga's pretty good once you get past the first section and all the pointless tits. Don't even look at the Anime though. It's awful.
Oh, and another manga called Uzumaki's pretty good. It's about the 'curse of the spiral'. But again, avoid the movie. It's fairly terrible.

Haven't seen any of the other things in your list but Death Note is amazingly awesome and full of win.

the full civil war thing, with all the different comics linked in with it, is awesome. I agree the drawings are spectacular

something else I'd reccomend (reading it myself at the moment) is Batman: Wargames Acts 1 2 and 3. Very good plot and awesome drawings. First time I've ever read a Batman and it gives me all the necessary info to understand the plot and characters straight away :)

I hear Batman: Arkham Asylum is also good

Try some other Marvel graphic novels too, they are very well made

If you liked Buffy I'd recomend Buffy season 8, only one I really read, thought I may look into some of the Batman ones

If it was only one, it would be Watchman, dyslexia boy.

Also, don't be a pedant.

There are loads of good batman ones. Arkham Asylum is ok, but nothing hugely special.

My favourites, Batmanwise, (apart from Long Halloweed, obv) are Cataclysm and the 5 No Man's Land books. Absolutely gripping.

Also well worth a look is The Killing Joke, which is one of the most ridiculously dark Batman comics there is.

Every time one of these threads comes along, I recommend Preacher, and I think generally someone backs me up. Hopefully that will happen again :)

you recommended it to me once, its very good

My two new favourite comics have to be the walking dead and invincible.
Both written by Robert Kirkman (marvel zombies)

Walking dead is centered around this group of people trying to live in a world overrun by zombies.

Invincible is the teenaged son of Omni-Man, an extraterrestrial superhero of the Viltrumite race, recently revealed to be more than he seems. Invincible inherited his father’s superhuman strength and ability to fly and he has sworn to protect the Earth. He has had trouble adjusting to his newfound powers and coping with the reality of his origins.

Are they better than Marvel zombies, because I wasn't too keen on that, I liked the idea but found the plot kind of poor.

Yotsuba& is just about the only thing that's ever made me laugh out loud, so I'd recommend that pretty heartily.

The plot is much better than marvel zombies, the fact they are both longer than six issues also means the story is more fleshed out and the characters have more of a background to them.

You should check them out

as others have mentioned: Watchmen

also

Arkham Asylum
Bone by Jeff Smith
most anything by Mike Mignola
Kingdom Come (even if you dont get whats happening, its awesome)
Cerebus the Aardvark (only the first half. it gets shit about halfway through).
Batman: Hush
Coraline (not a comic, but lovely)

oh

and Flight. Flight is a collection of short comics all done by different artists tackling different genres. Each comic is loosely based around the idea of Flight. Great books if you dont want a long long story.

also, Squee. Which contains the same hilarity of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac without all the droll preachy goth ongoings that killed the humor in JTHM.

also, the Dark Knight Returns. dont bother with the sequels though as they are a tad shite.

also Asterix the viking.

edit:

also, Gon. Its a series of silent comics about the last dinosaur on earth. A tiny t-rex who has weird misadventures out in the wild. Very entertaining, for having no words.

Fullmetal Alchemist vol.1; the manga is well worth reading even if you've seen the anime, as they are quite, quite different. The structure of the narrative is completely changed, some characters enter, leave and/or die at different times and have different roles, as well as a few tweaked personalities (Lust is a lot more gleeful in her evil-doings in the manga). It's also funnier than the anime; they're like two different interpretations of the same story.

Oh man, I totally forgot that the Killing Joke (batman), despite being less than brilliant, is good fun.

Also, Zekey mentioned Hush. I quite liked Hush, it had some really nice artwork and design and stuff, but I'm not too keen on it because it is too action orientated.

I keep meaning to get some johnen vasquez, but nowhere near here stocks it.

I recomend Bear by Jamie Smart for those who like Vasquez.

Also I can't believe I haven't said calvin and hobbes, I have a huge three book collection for every one ever.

Right. I've bought Watchmen on the advice of pretty much everyone. If I remember to, I'll post my opinion of it when I'm done.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is pretty good but the writing may bother you slightly. If you like batman you'll like it.Me wanting the book is mainly because Frank Miller wrote it. I'm enjoying Sin City and I figured I should look into the other stuff he's done. Speaking of Batman, what do people think of Gotham County Line? In my eyes, you can't get much better than Batman and zombies.
Bone by Jeff SmithI remember looking at this in Forbidden Planet. It's the one volume version, so it's damn huge!
also Asterix the viking. You mean they're still being made? Jesus, I used to watch the cartoons as a kid.
Also, Planet Hulk. Yay or Nay?

Any other comics people can recommend? Anyone know any good Spiderman comics?

Fissh

Amazing Spiderman is currently going through some major event called "one more day" which is supposedly going to change eeeverything.

Out of all the different Spiderman comics I've read, IMO Amazing is the best one. Ultimate is still stuck in the stage of him hiding his identity from Aunt May and puts him back as a high school kid. I like it much more seeing a grown up Peter dealing with adult problems.

Long story short: Pick up Amazing Spiderman after "One more day" has happened (as it could be confusing jumping in mid-action)

Thor comics are getting pretty darn awesome at the minute. If you can, pick them up before they get too far ahead as the series has only just started, has some beautiful artwork and a very satisfying Iron-Man asskicking episode.

And on a different Tangent, Detective Comics is good for some Batman action featuring some great villians. also Batman: War Games is a top class graphic novel

Sorry I don't think I was that clear, I meant more in terms of graphic novels than the comic series themselves (I did used to read spiderman comics weekly but it became more difficult to get the comics so I just gave up) although I'll look for One More Day when it's finished.

Read the Marvel "Civil War" comics, Eidderf. Plenty of Spidey and Iron Man and Iron Spidey.

yus yus

Also, when they finally all do come out, try and get The Dark Tower comics. The artwork in them is simply immense and even if you haven't read the books they are truely awesome.

There's a torrent with all 7 comics in it if you need, just search a bit

Thank god, I was afraid I was gonna have to smack people for not mentioning this.

...but I suppose that means I have nothing to add to the thread.
