hmm, this is a bit... weird.

i used to be a very frightened, paranoid person. anyway, my fears used to be:

people talking about me behind my back
failure- being a failure, failing at things
being sick (as in vomiting)
being ill in general
that i'd suddenly snap and kill someone
various things outside my control scared me
admitting my feelings to anyone
frightened of being mocked

recently, these have changed, but i don't feel comfortable telling them. but most of these are under control. i was a deeply unhappy person before i think.

I have two slightly odd fears.

I have a fear of balloons (globophobia), and a fear of tasting new foodstuffs, meaning my diet is limited to things I like and restaurants are places to be afraid.

S'been done many a time before, and eventually all the fears/what annoys you threads get locked.

Then more are made.

But anyway, contribution so I'm not just whining: I'm pretty damn scared of dogs. Anything bigger than a small labrador makes me nervous. Especially great danes - my friend used to have one. It was friendly as hell but always used to pick me out as the one person it had to bound up to, knock to the floor and lick. I'm petrified of them now :(

my fears seem to be more about mental pain than physical. i know i'd rather stab myself in the leg than have a group of people laugh at me. stupid i know, but fear is often irrational.

Thunder and lightening

Very very frightening you.

I'd like to be the first to point out that nearly all of these fears are actually phobias. A fear is always something rational or explainable, whereas a phobia is something you cannot explain and feel irrationally afraid of. Anyway, I have arachnophobia, although I don't feel so much as scared of spiders (and it's only the big, long-legged ones), I just feel hatefully against them. When I see one in my bedroom, even if I kill it, which I rarely do, I still feel as though they could be more and seem to summon an inner warrior in me who wants to kill anything insect.

I also have a bit of a phobia of crowds. Well, it's not so much a phobia, it's more a disliking. I look at Glastonbury or raves or concerts and think "fucking hell, that's awful." I think the reason is because I'm afraid if I make a fool of myself I'll be ridiculed a lot more. Having said that, it's only people my age in crowds that I dislike. I'd be totally fine with a large group of octogenarians or adults.

Other than that, I dislike mobile phones but that's more a distrust of them. There's a lot of people who keep dodgy stuff on them these days.

being in a room full of people i dont know.

I hate that. I think that probably counts for most people too.

- Ive always had a thing about walking through the woods, espeically when its dark. On the way to my house, i have to walk through a slightly wooded area and i cant stand it, my heart starts beating really fast and i feel like somone's watching me. I dont even like it when im with somone i know and its in broad day light. So i dont know what the phobia for woods is, but i think i got it.

- The dark. I dont really know how to explain this, but i can never ever go to sleep in a dark room unless im completely covered with my duvet , my whole face has to be covered. Its quite hard to breathe but i just cant. Maybe its a fear of opening my eyes to find somone staring at me.

- And thunder and lightning i hate. Almost makes me want to cry.

- Spiders is the most obvious i guess, along with slugs, snails and worms.

- Moths and Butterflies! :(

Maybe you should get the preist in to bless your house. A ghost from the 1600's might be watching you, hoping you'll give him his plot of land back that your house is built on.

waking up in the middle of the night with a gigantic spider on your sheets

I also have that fear that i will wake up from sleeping and there will be some evil weird person in the room standing over me although i do not fear ghosts as i do not believe in them (more worried about the things that are still alive)

oh and the idea of something under the bed bothers me. there is just something wrong with how the space under a bed is the perfect place for someone to hide

JebblehMooo

I dislike change for some reason and I don't know why. The weirdest case of my hate for new things was a couple of months ago when I had a double bed delivered for the first time. I'd been sleeping on an old mattress for a fortnight and kept waking up with headaches but I felt angry that I had a new way to sleep now, even though it was much nicer.

Having said that, it's only really when there is change involving something old. I've found moving to a new school with some old friends very difficult to be honest, but going on holiday and living with a load of people I didn't know in a country I'd never been to before was fine.

It latched onto my leg and wouldnt let go *cry*.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who's biggest fear is loosing my teeth.

Nope, I've got that one too. I knocked out bits of my two front teeth on our ski trip (not due to bad skiing, i hit them on one of the ski lifts), the remnants of the teeth forming an arch. The caps that they put on them fell out once whilst I was eating and then the next set fell out when a friends wallet collided with them. I now constantly picture them being knocked out in different ways and just about all my friends know they can use this against me. *shudder*

I have a fear of disappointing people and also being singled out. The second one's funny cos me and a mate constantly do stupid stuff but only cos no one knows us in the city and we're from a small country town.

Spiders are shit scary, as are snakes. Oh, also magpies, I'm just constantly scared they're gonna swoop me.

Heights, but only when my mind considers them to be unsafe. Example, I can lean out of a friends 18th floor window, but only cos it'd be extremely hard to fall out of it.

I hate being in a house all alone at night. I usually confine myself to only three rooms: My bedroom, our TV room and the toilet (if you gotta go, you gotta go).

In my old house I could never sleep with my cupboards open in fear of something coming out of them. The cupboards (built in) ran across the whole of one wall and the three sliding doors were mirrors. The mirrors are probably the thing that freaked me out (I swear I saw someone in mirrors several times).

Along the same lines as above, someone watching me from one of the corners of my room or following me home at night. It's one of the worst feelings.

That I haven't been properly angry, or cried, in I no longer know how long (years and years), and that when this next happens to me, I'll just snap and do something I'll really regret.
I joke to my friends about this, but it does really worry me...

Same here. I cracked in year 7. It was at a party and just lost it, though it was only yelling and threats and no one got hurt. For about two weeks afterwards my friends kept away from me because they were actually scared that I'd do something to them, but that all cleared up. That was 6 years ago and I'm always scared that it'll happen again.

Phew, that seems enough for now.

Sooo this. Except I have to cover my ears, not my eyes. This is because, years ago, I used to be able to hear people in my old house when there were no people there. Lols I wasn't insane either as other people had similar experiences there, some even worse.

Its probaly been said loads here allready but i hate spiders and heights.

I also have an irrational fear of reastraunts and eating places in general. I dont seem to think on this one any more, but i used to think the worst thing that could happen, which kinda developed into a fear, was having the flesh taken off your lower leg and someone scraping a knife up a down the bone, making a noise like fingernails on a blackboard. Don't ask me what possible scenario that would come up in, because i don't know, but it was something that popped into my head one day and since then, always sets my teeth on edge just thnking about it >.<

Being locked in a car and tossed into the deepest part of the ocean...sinking at least a mile until i hit the sea-bed, pitch black and the water hasnt started leaking into the car yet...so im just waiting to drown or pass out cos of the pressure. I was a man who couldn't die properly, so whenever somebody killed me I blacked out until the next day and then 'woke up' again and some men kept killing me everyday. Some men cut off my head and then the next day I had to negotiate with them just to shoot me instead because it hurt so much.

i always have nightmares about being drowned by some catastrophic ocean event. tsunamis, hurricanes, rising water levels. i have even had the car-sinking-in-the-ocean dream...except in mine i fell off a bridge and first i felt that falling sensation; and as the car got lower and lower into the water the light dimmed.

a few nights ago i dreamed the whole surface of the earth was covered in water except one little tiny patch of land that i was standing on :(

I went through a phase of such dreams once. Its bad enough to keep waking up, but its worse when something horrible catches you off guard. I once dreamt I woke up, did my normal routine, went downstairs to find my dad had turned into a zombie and was clawing at me. Brrr....

Theres also my fear of the dark. Like some of you chaps have mentioned, I often feel like theres someone or something watching me just in the corner of my eye. In fact, I cant listen with my headphones on in the dark, because im scared something could be there and I wouldnt be able to hear it. Im also quite prone to reading paranormal stuff before I go to bed, then lying there terrified that what I've just read will happen to me. Irrational perhaps, but very unnerving.

the things you are scared of as a kid are always the most amusing. when i was three or four i was scared of light bulbs that did not have shades over them. apparently i saw some disney cartoon where one of the characters got electrocuted by putting in a bulb.

at that age i was also scared of any sort of villian in movies. i thought willy wonka was like satan cause the kids kept dying on his tour and he seemed so happy about it. and the villian from who framed roger rabbit also scared me.... especially the scene where he deletes the cartoon shoe i could not handle it at the time

of course all that was dwarfed when i saw a freddy krueger movie at a slumber party at age 7 (lets just say i dont think i slumbered at that party afterwards ..was horrified!). for quite some time afterwards i was a bit scared to go to sleep at night . but when i was a freshman in college i saw one of the movies on tv and it just seemed so implausible and silly that i could not believe how much it had once terrified me

Sounds a bit like the movie Groundhog Day :)

As for my fears, I don't have any irrational ones and I'm definately not a phobic (a wpord which is used far to much these days for stuff which aren't technically phobias but that's just me nit-picking) but carrying on, just regular stuff like becoming life-threateningly ill/in pain or for my family. But we try not to think about these things.

I am shit scared of needles. It doesn't help that i have to have regular blood tests. Very traumatic experiences. Not being able to breath.

That's an instinct leftover from our caveman days when darkness usually meant hidden predators :eng101:.

Also I used to be shit scared of the children eating giants from the BFG. Luckily for Child-Me these giants couldn't get me as long as my duvet came up to my neck and all my limbs were in the bed. Duvets are magic. I still get uncomfortable when my feet hang out...

Also fear of death confuses me, as you know once your dead you wont really care anymore...

means this is why people discovered fire!! It scared away the beasties and allowed us time to ponder the universe which probably resulted in civilisation.

Therefore, your fear of the dark is completely awesome as without it, the modern world would just not exist :)

As for my fears, they range from seeing somebody (who shouldnt be there) behind me in the mirror annnnd having my wrists cut. Yes it sounds odd, but just thinking about it makes my arms tingle and makes me feel ill :(

I fear the sky, especially when looking up into it, fearing that I'll fall up into that infinite void. Big tall ceilings like in gymnasiums don't exactly tickle me pink either.

I just don't like spiders. I'm ok with the small ones, like money spiders, so i just kill them, but the spiders with long legs and huge body's.... I just hate.

I dont mean to sound cocky but at this moment of time I dont have any fears. When I was younger I was Terrified of Clowns, not any more though :).

Once when I was little there was a news story about some peeping tom sort of person who was running around looking into peoples bedroom windows in town. I guess some guy woke up to see his face looking through the window.

ever since then i have dreaded the idea of waking up to see someone looking through the window ... especially if they are sinister

Or...to put a different twilight zone thing on the wing spin on it if you have your blinds down and for some reason get the feeling to look out them and when you move them you suddenly see a person on the other side of the glass
