View Full Version : Monitor b0rking and such shenanigans

I bought my present monitor on 19th January this year. Today when I turned it on, it was obviously high on LSD or similar, as the screen display was correct but for the psychedelia I saw. Turned it off and on a few times, realised the display was showing up correctly sometimes and a bit too colourful at others. Seems to have calmed down a bit now that I've threatened it with its three-year guarantee and my proof of purchase.
I don't know if this is relevant, but my radiator is behind my computer desk. Up until the funny screen business, the back of my monitor was over the radiator (a few inches above). Since the colourful shenanigans, I've turned the radiator down and moved the monitor forward so it's not as near to the radiator.
I'd like to know if anyone else has had this happen, and if so what was the result (explosion? new monitor needed? repairable by stockist? etc)... It's not difficult for me to take it back, but as I said it does seem to be ok at the moment.
Advice and opinions, please :) (sorry for lengthy post!)

Hmm..It's probably more likely to be your graphics card than anything else, if you know what make and model it is update the drivers.

Indeed I do know the manufacturer, for this is a home-built PC :) I'll try Windows Update etc.
i'd suggest taking it back if you only purchased it in january

omfg :( Scary stories :'( why did it explode?
ash - I'm gonna wait and check it again tomorrow. The same thing happened once to our TV at home for a day, and it's been fine since... hmm... we shall see. Not the most urgent of PC problems when there's a uni computer cluster round the corner, and i'll go get a bank statement tomorrow to get proof of purchase Just In Case...

k :)
The one I had before this was twelve(!) years old, and died of natural causes on the 19th Jan, which is when I rallied my boyfriend round and made a pissed-off trip to buy this one...

aye, I had a speaker next to it the first day I used it and noticed colour disturbance, and moved everything electrical. So it wasn't that, this time. It seems fine now :) but I'm still going to the bank tomorrow to get a statement for proof of purchase, with which to scare the monitor into submission
You're all lovely and helpful. You might get rupies :) (read: just got in from a night out, slightly tipsy, feeling generous!)
[edit] donations done, people. Feel rich on me.
[edit2] lovely boyfriend has fixed borked laptop of mine - part of the reason for this computer's existence, as ME corrupted itself. He managed to get all the display drivers etc without phoning any 18-year-old kid on his holiday job who would probably twitter "what's a display card?" :D
