Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Ok, so I picked this up for PC earlier today and this is utterly fantastic. It's quickly shaping up to be my favorite in the series (which is saying a lot considering CoD3 was fantastic with its "push the button NOW" gimmicks and overall good storyline and my favorite of them all prior to this one, the original CoD with fantastic story elements and cinematic presentation).

The single player (which I've been playing since I got home about 4 hours prior to this post) is just very well done. Not a single problem so far aside from one or two ragdoll glitches. From the very beginning the game is full of twists and turns in the story that'll have you in shock and awe (no pun intended). The actual gameplay is just beautiful, every gun FEELS powerful, every piece of cover FEELS like it's not enough especially anything wood (You can shoot and BE shot through wood cover). It even feels like you're in the war, i.e. with voiceovers. Rather than soldiers who have 2 emotions over the radio ("everything is ok" and "SNAFU" respectively), you can hear them be calm, you can hear their voices waver when they're nervous, you'll hear heavily unsure "uhhh's" from time to time...it just sounds real and not like it's just being read off of a script.

I haven't gotten the chance to play multiplayer as of yet, for some reason I can't connect to any servers right now so I think that may have to be something I have to fix on my end.

So far overall it just is a wonderful game and highly recommended.

By the way, anyone wondering about the PC requirements shouldn't worry. The game doesn't need a heavy duty PC to run. A nice mid-grade PC will run it just fine and a low-end will have a bit of a struggle but still should be able to run it.

EDIT: Beat the single player in a day. All I can say is...wow...I've played quite a few games that I felt satisfied with at the end, but this. The ending is just so double edged (you'll know what I mean if you play through), so good yet so...ugh I don't wanna say anything more to give it away. (this was all on a sit-in night too...it's not a short game by any means in terms of FPS length. It lasted a good 8 hours on the Normal difficulty)

Game sent me a COD4 "Preview DVD" today, it comes in a proper DVD case with a proper cover and everything. I was hoping for a single player demo but it's just a bunch of trailers and gameplay movies. What a waste of packaging and shipping.

I'm not sure if I want this game or not, but I could just draw over the "PREVIEW DISC" text on the spine with a black marker and put it on my shelf and pretend I own this game, which is pretty much half the fun!

Guys if you don't like the singleplayer you'll love the multiplayer. I mean, this is a thing of wonders here. It's set up perfectly so that you know where you're going while the hud isn't cluttered with useless info, there are multiple modes of play and several variations (such as Hardcore mode which takes away the HUD forcing you to aim with Ironsights and makes all the weapons deal "real" damage, i.e. one hit, one kill most of the time), and the best are the lil perks for each class. Once you level up far enough you can assign your own perks and customize your weapons with scopes and such, it's amazing, simply amazing.

I was kind of turned off by the multiplayer beta because of the whole RPG element where you get better equipment abilities as your rank increased, I hate that stuff. It seems like I might be in the minority there though.

Yeah I haven't found enough intel yet. It'll take me forever but I like to look for these things on my own (I have about 10 out of 50 laptops found) rather than by using a guide so it oughtta be fun.

Also something I didn't mention before (Splush might like this one): The credits music takes a page from Gears of War and has Staff Sergent Griggs rapping about the game...oh lord.

Lastly: There's a bonus level after the credits in which you have to find a civilian hostage in a hijacked plane before time runs out. It opens with an obvious "Airplane!" reference, too! (I'll let you figure that one out for yourself)

Hehe, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, except I've been playing CoD4 since I got back from skoolz (and I didn't take part in the beta :()

Gotta say, it's certainly very good, I never owned a CoD title before and this looked really good so I wanted to give it a go. There are certain gunfights in the game where things will just get really hectic, to the point that you're on the edge of your seat.

1. You have to click "Refresh Server List". There are loads of people playing all the time (if you're playing the PC version...if it's the 360 version I apologize)

2. You'll see why the Marine missions are not as hashed out soon enough...

Yeah, that level is a bit of a bitch at a few points, but the payoff is that it's one of the most beautifully done levels in the game AND the first part of the level that follows.

Your best bet is probably the level "War Pig". When Lt. Vasquez shouts at the beginning of the level to grab an RPG and shoot down the choppers you have only mere moments to do so. There's an RPG stash somewhere on the other end of the bog from where you start. You know what to do...

Alternatively, find an RPG terrorist kill him before he can fire and take his RPG.

CoD4 is the shit, amazing, finished it today on Hardened (which was hard, you die in about 4 bullets), and now I'm completing it on Veteran.

Multiplayer also rivals Halo 3 in my opinion.

Completed COD:4 today and wow it's amazing,
It feels like a mixture between COD:2 and some kind of epic action movie.

I'm loving the multiplayer as well, it feels quite a bit different from COD:2's
and I miss my beloved no-scope bolt-actions but it is still amazing.
I was quite concerned over the leveling system and customization at first,
but it seems like a good addition and incentive to keep playing.

Harry gregson-williams did a brilliant job on the sound-track too.

Repetative? What was repetative about it? It's an FPS, the epitome of repetative formulas: run, shoot, run, shoot, run, shoot, do some objective, lather, rinse, repeat.

Outside of that formula I didn't find one thing repetative about it, Infinity Ward knows how to make a game that takes an old formula and spice it up by sticking in objectives you won't expect or game moments that just leave you in awe.

Yeah, that would be one mission.

First mission: Find Al Asad. You don't find him, you regroup instead for the next mission

Second mission: Find tank. Kill other tanks on the way. Defend your tank. Kill stuff. Air support.

Third mission: Follow tank down the road clearing buildings on the way.

Fourth mission: You ARE the air support. You get dropped off a couple of times along the way.

And it continues like that. I don't see any repetativeness outside of "lol kill stuff" there.

First mission on the boat, I'd imagine would be th best one to get this (Although I've not done it yet). Run up to the drunk guy and stab him then stab the two guys sleeping.

I don't suppose there's any advice to give other than "don't get shot" so I'm just having a moan really, not asking for help. It's just bloody frustrating. I've got to the point where I'm trying to find glitches in the scenery where I can just hide and wait for it to be over. It's not working.

1. Switch out your pistol for an AK-47 when you get the chance. That makes a better close combat weapon.

2. Plant your claymores near the entrance area but spread them out so you don't have them all blow at the same time. Oh and it's also a good idea to set a couple near the Ferris Wheel so you don't get flanked from that direction.

3. Feel free to plop yourself near where Captain MacMillian wants to sit. It's probably the best spot.

I already switched the pistol for an MP5 fortunately. My current checkpoint is mid-way through the battle, by which point all my claymores and C4s have been used. I get the feeling I'm getting so close to the end but then suddenly I've got dudes all around me. Thanks for the words of advice though.

I just have to man-up and keep replaying it until I start crying and somehow accidentally win through a haze of desperate tears.

When I did that part I went prone on the dodgem rink.

It seems like an unusual place but quite alot of enemies don't see you,
and if they do you can just get up and move back to avoid their nades,
or use an automatic weapon to mow them down if they try and get close up.

(you can also lie on-top of an actual dodgem for a hight advantage although
you'll obviously be more vulnerable.)

The best part is running to the heli when it comes to pick you up. Oh no wait, that's annoying.

I took up position next to Captain and when ever i got hit got to the lying down position until my screen was not red any more, got up threw grenades and sniped a few coming in then the one close spray and pray with AK. Repeated until the heli arrived.

However i am stuck on the part where you have to chase that incredibly fast guy, (he looks like the main sniper of behind enemy lines aswell ^^) he just seems to get away, do i have to shoot him in the leg or something?

I'm at a point where I can pretty consistently hold my ground until the helicopter arrives, mainly by sniping from the dodgem rink (cheers Haroshi) and then retreating back behind it and fending people off with my MP5 when things get too hairy, and now I'm just struggling to get to the helicopter alive and in time.

Just now I managed to get far enough that I was literally standing on the helicopter ranp holding my buddy when then pilot decided he was bored and started taking off, with the ramp somehow moving right through my body as the helicopter rose up into the air.

I hate this game for putting me through this :(

I finally finished this infuriating game and it was awesome. I still have some gripes about the way the game is put together and scripted but as far as making you feel like you've experienced an actual war goes it's unprecedented. The Tom Clancy games have some catching up to do in that regard.

What happens when you finish the bit on the plane after the credits? I tried it a few times but I really don't feel like doing it right now after all that. If you get something cool then I will, though.

This game is awesome. Just awesome. The multiplayer is absolutely brilliant, the campaign I haven't got round to finishing yet, but is on a similar par to the multiplayer, if a bit less hectic.

Ive found this to not be the case at all actually. I hope you did end up trying the multiplayer. Although you are missing the demolitions and sniper class to start with, they unlock pretty quickly, within a decent play session basically, so say an hour and a bit. And yes, you are missing the "decent" weapons, but the ones available seem to be more than sufficient.

The entire multiplayer experience is exquisite. The different types of game seem to be well thought out, with the scoring system being simple yet effective. The maps are well designed, with the starting locations constantly shifting dependant on team locations, and most importantly for me, there's no stupid timer to respawn. You spend literally every second in action, be it sprinting from cover to cover as you try and push forwards, rushing to stay alive whilst you get back to that favorite sniping spot, or storming your way through a house, grenades flying everywhere.
It's not too sniper infested either, which has been a problem with a lot of multiplayer war games ive played recently. It's rare to find a place that doesn't have at least 2 ways they can get to you.

All in all, if you're thinking of getting a game in this genre, get this.

That's either not possible or does nothing. I believe we've had someone do it before and all that happens is the bridge gets blown away anyway.

I have to say i'm loving it. it takes a while to get used to it, and to stop yourself from dying every minute (still struggling with that one) but at least now i'm getting some kills. What I love is how every game is different. sometimes you get people who run round guns blazing, sometimes you just get snipers/campers (which is rather annoying). It's my aim to come 3rd in a game that has more than 8 people atm (4th last go)

Actually it would have, the ranks are based on actual Marine ranks I believe, except they aren't followed by "I" (like Sergeant I, II, etc.). That is just to increase the ranks themselves.

EDIT: After you pass 55 (and unlock the Golden Desert Eagle), you get "prestige mode" which is essentially collecting badges for progressing in the ranks a second time.

it either puts you in a game on the losing team with 1 round to go or it puts you in a game that's half way through the last round meaning you don't actually get to play

Haven't found a way to rollback the patch to 1.3 (or whatever it was before) yet and thus have stopped playing it until 1.5 is released and (hope to god) the problem is fixed.

Just finished single player on the PC. Absolutely loved it, although I don't usually play games on the PC as I'm not a mouse/keyboard fan. I just bought it to test out my new laptop really.

Ugh I am so stuck at the end of "One Shot, One Kill" where we're supposed to fend off waves of dudes at the ferris wheel as we wait for a helicopter to pick us up. I don't suppose there's any advice to give other than "don't get shot" so I'm just having a moan really, not asking for help. It's just bloody frustrating. I've got to the point where I'm trying to find glitches in the scenery where I can just hide and wait for it to be over. It's not working.
That bit pissed me off too, but I found a place to hide. Behind the dodgems, there's a wooden fence. If you go behind that, no enemies come after you. Instead they just keep chucking grenades towards the fence.

Edit: What I loved about the game was that the gameplay was really varied (for a FPS), and the cut scenes and cinematics were just superb, especially stuff like the aftermath of the nuke.

Edit 2: For you UK peeps, did anyone else think one of the main SAS guys (I wasn't paying attention to the names really) sounded like Ross Kemp? I thought it was actually him who did the voice (especially since he's done army related tv shows), but I couldn't see him in the credits.

Major winage for me. Finished a game with 32 kills and 10 deaths. Got Carpet Bomper too, for killing 5 people with an airstrike...all in all, the level gave me 780exp, which I was pleased with.

I seem to be topping my team for a good 90% of the games i'm in - people are too wussy sometimes. Grab an AK-47u and get right in their face, that's how you do it!

Oh...and online, there is NOTHING better than when you run face-to-face into three enemys, start shooting even thogh you KNOW you'll die...and end up taking them all out with a really flukey burst of shots that happens to hit two in the head :D


And EVERYONE on the 360 voice chats. I'm gunna go buy a mic so I can join in.

I was playing the pc version of this last night and my graphics card packed in. It was on its last legs and it just had too much. I was stunned that it ran at all on this PC, let alone looking so pretty.

From what I got from about 3 hours playtime, it's an absolutely amazing single player campaign. I found that CoD 2 and 3 got a little tedious after a while, but this one keeps changing it up and keeping fresh. Didn't have a chance to try the multiplayer, but I've ordered the innards for a new rig which should arrive before lunchtime today. Can't wait!

Vet is very hard, ive not played cod4 single player in a while after I was drove to insanity playing the mission with the ferris wheel and stupid amounts of soldiers.

For Vet though it involves lots of shooting very fast followed by hiding very much.

^midgets got the knack. Unfortunately the solution is often to get to where the enemies spawn. I did veteran on a console without getting stuck too much tbh. One shot one kill, No fighting in the war room and Mile High were the places where the difficulty peaked.

Finished COD4 single player on verteran yesterday and by god is the second to last level (not counting the epilogue) hard. I must have died somewhere in the region of 60+ times. Luckily the sheer brilliance of the game offsets just how frustrating it is at points.

I occasionally play on hardcore servers, as it offers a different style of playing.

The main problem I have with it though is the fact that it makes the majority of the weapons obsolete.

You may as well just use a P90, as you will dominate any close to medium combat situation,
and are able to take people out on the other side of the map with a simple headshot.


So yeah it's a nice alternative, but normal play is better balanced in my opinion.

The only problem with HC is the G3 in my opinion, its brutally overpowered. 1 hit will kill 9/10 times. 2 hits from pretty much any long range distance.
MP5 and deagle is my favourite weapon set for hc.

No I'm better because noob tube is the new sniper/black. And it's the easiest way to get kills on HC S&D. Also you want steady aim as number 3 no matter what for an SMG IMO, 1st perk can be whatever depending on game type.

my favourite gun overall is the g3 though

nah AK47 is awesome, no other assualt rifle has as high damamge with automatic fire (MP44 is the same with a lower rate), not to mention the fact it is also a one-hit-kill on hardcore so it can be far more effective there. With an ACOG or silencer it is easily my favourite weapon. The only gun I really don't like is the M14 and the MP44 if you count that.

I'm thinking you can guess what kind of chaos that creates. When you have a guy sprinting around firing RPGs and random sprays with a Skorpion, all while taking any shots with anyone nearby. I found the AK47 to be fast, powerful & to have a lot of bullets in one mag...which makes it better than all other assault rifles I tried. I also cant stand Last Stand...because in most matches its fucking useless, martyrdom is fun tho...specially on Domination or Headquarters when all the enemy team comes to grab the point & your grenade goes off.

Most matches on it consist of dodging a volley of grenades and/or getting slaughtered by a heli as soon as you spawn.
And all it is is a straight map with some obstacles, very little room for tactics.

Get behind them and you can do SERIOUS damage.

What I liked was the fact that it was empty, apart from the center which was just a warzone...it was a massive rush & it was epic fun & I found the red dot to be the only decent attachment you can get...the scope is fucking pointless, as is the grip...the grenade launcher is awesome...but that's only on a few guns.

I personally think the grips are the shiz.
If you stick one on a RPD or SAW they become so accurate that you can pretty much snipe with them. Makes them totally lethal on bog.
And they just make the shotguns much more effective.

We so do, it replaces perk#1 and reduces your recoil. I don't use it though, much happier with extra nades + extra damage + hip accuracy.

When I first played I was ass too, everyone is, it's a very fast paced game. In my experience I found you never really get any better, but you learn things. Your best bet is to follow a member of your team around & watch what they do & simply copy their methods & adjust them slightly to your own uses. Things like grenades are crucial...but it takes a number of hours of play to see how to throw grenades properly (as in where & when), for example.

More perks unlock as you gain levels but, I find that the most useful ones are there when you start anyway, so it's no big deal.

My advice is to use C4, it may be a bit impractical but it's funny as hell.

yah...chase someone with C4, attempt to either get in front of them or stop behind them & either way when you've done that throw it & detonate it, the enemy run into it every time.

If you're not not hardcore, stopping power and steady aim are my favourite- most used perks. Iron lungs, bandolier and claymores are also good. I like hardcore though as you can mess around with overkill, sleight of hand and uav jammer etc without being at a disadvantage power-wise.

But in any situation an all round stealthy class is good (silencer, uav jammer etc) usuallly with an smg, remember not to silence your pistol; if you do this you can use it to lure enemies into traps.

I found juggernaut to be real useful, although you will get burned for using it. Deep Impact is a must have if you use a shotty.

I've been using a deagle since I unlocked it, but yesterday went back to using the M1911.

Although the deagle is very powerful (2 shot with Stopping Power in normal mode) the low accuracy when firing fast is annoying.
And the the fact that M1911 is super accurate, can be used with a suppressor, and can be shot extremely quickly to great effect makes it my kind of gun.

I played for over 300 hours on that, but I dont enjoy it so much anymore. Im loving cod4 right now, It'll probably go the same way as Cod2 though. :eng101:

My dad decided to buy call of duty 2 a couple of weeks after I bought 4. We both play both of the games regularly though we both find ourselves playing call of duty 4 alot more. I think it's the challenge of trying to unlock the weapons we want. For example my dad's wanted the Barret from the start and we're now only one level away.

With most good online games though I find myself literally addicted for months on end only to find I want nothing to do with the game anymore all of a sudden and then all the other games I play for a month or so seem quite crappy.

But after going back to it a few days ago it seems so primitive compared to CoD4,
I keep bringing up the console when trying to sprint (i have sprint set to ~ on my keyboard). :p

But it is nice going back to CoD2 for a bit of snap shooting with the bolt actions,
seems like I still seem to be able to do it even after not playing for half a year.
