Im leaning more towards Mass Effect, you guys?

I'm gonna sound like an idiot asking this, but what is Mass Effect all about?
Right now, I'm leaning towards Assassin's Creed, even though I don't have a 360 or the waste of money known as the PS3. I do, however, have a DS for when it comes out on the DS.

Indeed Skoo mah boi. Indeed.
The Mass Effect character creation looks cool, but I must admit Ass Ass In Creed looks pretty awesome too, but I guess I wont actually know which I like more untill I play them both :-/
I preordered assassins creed the other day and the reciept reads "360ASSASS". This amused me.

Hmm, yeah mass effect may be an RPG, but it still looks too shooter based for my liking. I prefer oblivion style RPGs. But not Two worlds. assassin's Creed it is then. ^_^
Assassins Creed is twice the ass that Mass Effect is.

Well, while you're buying it as you like it, I hope you're not also encouraged to buy it, just because they mention another game you like? Kinda weird reason to also get the game.
Mass effect to me seems like a better value for money because the thing is going to be massive and you'll want to play it over and over, but I'm leaning toward assassins creed purely because fucking hell, it really does look like the stuff dreams are made out of.
I wish doing all the flag collecting and extra assassinations would get you more than gamerpoints thoughFrom videos I've seen, that just looks like any other shooter, really. The teaser trailers have been good though - especially the one where they talk about GTA4 in the lift. I'm not planning on buying Kane and Lynch for the single player, the Fragile Alliance multiplayer game is what's made it for me.
I can imagine it being really dull after a few rounds though, so it'll be a rental first.Well, while you're buying it as you like it, I hope you're not also encouraged to buy it, just because they mention another game you like? Kinda weird reason to also get the game. It's not so much that they mention it, it's that they do it and then make references to themselves as being less than stereotypical game characters, the whole idea of making videogame characters not look like they're typical videogame characters is very classy, and is really fitting for the game idea (they're "not" the stereotypical game people, they are bad people! Very bad people!), I wouldn't have thought this was the developers plan until I saw the video.

Well nah, that kind of trailer is just done to raise interest.
EDIT: I'm not even sure I am buying it.
I just took a look at some fragile alliance stuff, it's a great idea in theory but I'm almost certain it'll turn dull quickly, what with team fortress 2 being so much better than most anything for multiplayer right now.
Assassins creed, because it's coming out on pc and i dont have a console. If i had a console mass effect would probably be more tempting...
Thomp
10-11-2007, 11:07 AM
Both.
I like how one of the big selling points about GTA IV was that it was suppose to be the first game to have crowds of people react to your movements and such, now they delayed it assasin's creed will be the first to have done it.

I'd choose Mass Effect if I was being forced to pick one but they both seem rather special. I still think some stuff in Assassin's Creed (combat, mainly) looks fairly dodgy but the concept and the review scores seem good enough to ignore that.

I reckon it'll be on PC sooner or later, Bioware's previous Xbox games have done that and MS are probably desperate to have it as the first really good Vista-exclusive game.

Embody a young student who visits her grandmother's house for the summer. Your grandmother leaves to go on holiday and leaves you in charge of her house. During her absence you will have to maintain the house and even decorate it to your taste. In order to do this you will need to earn money by taking care of all your neighbour's babies, where you will find your vocation - babysitting!
thats right you go stay with your grandmother who buggers off ... doesn't seem fair

Ah-ha, "only possible thanks to the PS3s huge power"! Remember when Assassin's Creed being mutiplatform was the worst kept secret ever, due to somebody looking behind a curtain at a show and seeing that the supposed PS3 exclusive game was running on a 360.
And totally unreliable exclusivity claims have kind of been the theme of this generation from then on.

I think Mass Effect.
Assassin's creed just hasn't grabbed me with it's trails or anything, and I suspect it will be a bit of a dud in the end. More style than substance. Mass Effect looks like it has a pretty gripping storyline, and Bioware have a good track record, even though they have done a bit of a peter molyneux with the publicity for it. But then again, I probably won't be playing either for a while.

Did you play Knights of the Old Republic? If so it's like that but with combat a bit more similar to Gears or something, rather than turn-based stuff. Also the conversation system and dialogue choices are supposed to be less stupid and morally boring than older Bioware games, but I think they say that for every game and never quite live up to it. Also space lesbians; lesbians in space.
Honestly just a KOTOR clone with pretty graphics would be enough to sell it to me, I love that shit.

I always find gametrailer reviews strange, the rating the games get don't seem to match what the reviewers say. I mean Assassin's Creed is meant to be a stealth game, if the enemy AI isn't very good then that's a big problem.
Assassin's creed has been delayed in Australia and New Zealand until November 21st:
Due to manufacturing and freight difficulties during this time of year, Ubisoft Australia & New Zealand were unable to receive their full allocation of Assassins Creed stock required to fulfill all Day One orders.
In an effort to treat all retailers and consumers fairly, Ubisoft will wait until the balance of stock is received in our warehouse before we ship the game. The new street date for Assassin's Creed on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be Wednesday 21st November. Please ensure that your stores are aware of this development so they can correctly answer any customer enquiries they may receive.
Ubisoft sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this delay has caused to your staff and customers.

I get the feeling that they (Ubisoft) overplayed the stealth element in the early hype for the game and it's not really a stealth game except for a little bit of Hitman-style milling around in crowds.
I've read so many game reviews that seem to have no relation to the score though, like I remember 1up's Gears of War review just being a list of complaints with a big fat 10/10 on the end. Perhaps reviewers know that 99% of people just go straight to the score so they just fill the actual review text with meaningless nonsense.
The assassin's creed scores on metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/assassinscreed) are all pretty good right now. 1up's is the lowest at 7/10. I noticed on neogaf.com somebody posted the first review (gameinformer, 95%) and one of the writers from 1up posted "oh wow" and then later edited his comment out, I thought maybe 1up were going to be giving it a 5/10 or something.

It would be nice to see a demo.
"Free" running. (Press A to be awesome)
Crackdown in the crusades (this would be good for me)
Press A to hear more dialogue as we force you into a linear story. (This would suck)

Is "action/adventure" too vague? I dunno. Plenty of games have stealth bits in them but aren't stealth games, like Beyond Good and Evil had sneaking sections throughout but you'd never call that a stealth game. It's all pointless semantics either way, it does suck if the AI isn't very good.

I'm softening to Assassin's Creed in some ways, but also some of my misgivings seem to be confirmed slightly. I mean, it's an absolutely beautiful game, no doubt about that, and the way combat works appeals to me - some people seem to be saying it's too fiddly, but I quite like that. For example Hidden and Dangerous 2 combat takes a while to master, but when you do it's immensely satisfying being able to take a machine gun post in about 20 seconds.
But then I think the freerunning looks overhyped - especially as it sounds like they've over complicated the control system. I'm reading that the story is sub par because they are clearly building for a sequel, and to be honest, the storyline doesn't sound particularly thrilling or gripping. Also, the AI issues sound really horrible, as in possibly a deal breaker. One of Deus Ex' few bad points was it's AI (shoot a guy with a stealth pistol and the bloke right next to him won't even notice) and towards the end of the game actually annoyed me, so if it's the same in this....

13-11-2007, 05:23 PM
I just watched that gametrailers review, it does look so disappointing seeing them stab a guy in plain sight and just go straight into stealthy mode and have the guards totally ignore you. And the combat with the ring of enemies around you each patiently waiting their turn to attack looks as stupid as ever. But everything else looks so great, I dunno what to think.
Crackdown in the crusades (this would be good for me)
This review (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87432) dwells a lot on the Crackdown comparison, saying it's incredibly similar but not as good, which I wasn't expecting. Crackdown was great fun though, fortunately. It's a shame they go on to say that there isn't any fun to be had in the world other than the actual missions (unlike Crackdown) and it becomes "quite amazingly repetitive" :(

I think I read that you have a choice to either hold down the right trigger (I think) and have him automatically climb over/up obstacles, or you can do it manually which is harder but you get more control. I might have got that wrong though.
My mate Bob has actually played Assassin's Creed as GAME stores have them in already. He says its fantastic so far, so chill with the worrying people.

Yeah, I'm not all that worried. I know the combat and AI doesn't look so hot, but the rest looks decent enough. I'm willing to put up with an sub par story too, I think, if there's going to be sequels.
About the combat and AI, if they had to err one way, I'm glad it was towards stupidity. I've played games where the enemy AIs just block constantly and you can hardly get a hit in. That's got to be worse than AI that are too easy to kill.

Reviews are just their opinions, guys, you may end up enjoying the game.
Don't put AC on a downer just because some people don't like it. Everyone in the gaming industry creamed their pants over Olivion, yet I found it dull... that's MY opinion compared to others. So yeah, if you like the look of AC and think it'll be a good buy, then get it :)

The "reviews are just opinions" thing only works up to a point, a score is always going to be subjective but if a review says the AI doesn't work or that the game makes you do the same thing over and over again, I see those as fairly objective things. "If you like the look of it just get it" isn't very comforting either, given that it involves dropping £40. Spending that much money on things just because they look good, and wilfully ignoring professional critics, seems foolish.
Gamespot's review is very encouraging, I must say. The variety between the different reviews is really striking.

That's all true, but in the end it's what the consumer, themselves, thinks. Sometimes the professional critics will review a game that may a genre that isn't their favourite. You do get some reviewers saying a racing game isn't brilliant, but then again the Racing genre may not be their most liked genre.

Well I'd hope nobody would assign somebody that doesn't like racing games to a racing game review, but I see your point. I'm not saying professional reviews should be taken as gospel by any means, just that your attitude of "buy it if you think it might be good" is impractical when games are so expensive.
Pft. Don't be ashamed. It's true. A read of review of Batman Begins that said it was rubbish (LAWL!), which was written by a girl.
Girls don't understand these things.
This is way off-topic, but I thought Batman Begins was rubbish, which was an impressive feat given the level of talent involved. I think if you take away the fact that everybody loves Batman and look at the actual film it's a piece of shit really.

Spiralling otu further into Batman territory briefly, I think Splush is being mean about Batman Begins. Admittedly, it was terribly terribly written, but the direction and cinematography is incredible. Acting maybe not so good.

It's very shiny and nicely made, but the plot was just so rote and predictable and Bale (who I'm usually totally gay for) was completely charmless as Batman. I totally didn't care about it by the last half hour.
Wait a minute, Assassin's Creed is very pretty but (apparently) gets boring and repetitive towards the end! Maybe this isn't so off-topic.

Seeing as you've brought up Batman Begins, I hated that they seemed to be using Gary Oldman as comic relief. I think I might have died a tiny bit inside because of that.
On topic, I'm still getting Assassin's Creed, regardless of review scores.
Also, lol at the Jade Raymond thing.

I figured that mentioning BB would bring out you crazies who don't like it.
Stop being so silly.
Back on topic! I shall most likely be getting AC and MA as well...
EDIT: Also it may have been mentioned already but my secondary source for gaming info has given AC a juicy 9/10 \o/

"Quite simply, Assassin's Creed is one of the best games of the year."
Egad, IGN called it "one of the top five most disappointing games of all time".
see it's already winning awards

(although the ign review of assass was putting me off anyway, so maybe it'll be better if i can see what you guys think first)
IGN UK gave it like...6.5, and IGN AUS gave it 8.7. I don't know who to believe anymore.

I don't recall seeing a major game getting such mixed reactions before, it's weird. Not that anybody's giving it really bad reviews, but there's a marked difference in tone between the two sides. Either way I threw caution to the wind and ordered it so I'll soon see for myself.

Gametrailers did another strange video review today of Kane and Lynch, they had minor problems it seems but overall it was very positive and it got an 8, which isn't a terrible score or anything but compared to the AC review that seemed much more negative, the final score seems kind of random.

If we've established anything its that review scores suck. I think it would be great to have a reviews site that just wrote brief, unpretentious reviews explaining a game's good points and weak points, and didn't bother with scores at all. But I suspect nobody would read it, which is generally a problem.
i like waiting for the something awful video game reviews because they are short and have a good point.

I think you'll find that the best internet reviews are written by a man named Yahtzee over at escpaistmagazine.com.
For example, here is his review of Halo 3 http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2304-Zero-Punctuation-Halo-3
It is a video review so really you have no excuse.

RE:
Infringement of ASSASSIN’S CREED Mark and Jade Raymond’s Personal, Privacy, and Publicity Rights
Dear Mr. Kyanka:
We are counsel to Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. (“Ubisoft”), publisher of the popular video game ASSASSIN’S CREED and employer of Ms. Jade Raymond (“Ms. Raymond”). Ubisoft is also the owner of the following U.S. trademark applications for the ASSASSIN’S CREED mark (the “Mark”): Serial No. 78850944; Serial No. 78866696; and Serial No. 78850968. In consequence of Ubisoft’s extensive efforts and expenditures, substantial goodwill has been built up for Ubisoft and the products and services sold under the Mark, and the ASSASSIN’S CREED game is one of the most widely anticipated games of the year.
Ubisoft has recently learned that the extremely offensive pornographic image (the “Image”) accessible at http://sabretooth.mirror.waffleimag...dd47ceb2a5.jpg, a copy of which is attached hereto, is being used on your website located at http://www.somethingawful.com and/or other related sites, including, but not limited to, http://forums.somethingawful.com (collectively, the “Site”). Such Image and misuse of the ASSASSIN’S CREED mark constitute trademark infringement, dilution, and unfair competition in violation of common law trademark rights, the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. §§1125(a) and 1125(c), and state law.
Furthermore, the Image’s blatant, vile, and unauthorized misappropriation of Ms. Raymond’s name and likeness, and your conduct in using the Image on your Site, have caused immeasurable harm to Ms. Raymond’s reputation and career, and constitute an egregious infringement of Ms. Raymond’s personal rights and privacy rights. The Image and your conduct also constitute an egregious unauthorized commercial exploitation of Ms. Raymond’s rights of publicity in violation of, without limitation, her common law rights of publicity and California Civil Code §3344, which provides in relevant part:
“Any person who knowingly uses another’s name, .., photograph, or likeness, in any manner, on or in products, merchandise, or goods, or for purposes of advertising or selling, or soliciting purchases of, products, merchandise, goods or services, without such person’s prior consent…shall be liable for any damages sustained by the person or persons injured as a result thereof.”
It is well established that a person who commercially exploits the name or likeness of someone without their consent is liable for all of the damages caused thereby. Additionally, the Image and your conduct in using the Image on the Site constitute unfair business practices and false advertising in violation of the California Business and Professions Code; intentional infliction of emotional distress; a violation of the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. §1125(a); and harassment, which is a criminal offense.
Please also note that any failure to comply with applicable privacy laws may result in direct action against you by the Federal Trade Commission, in addition to other litigation.
Ubisoft hereby demands that you immediately: (1) permanently remove the Image from your Site, databases and servers and prevent any further uploading or display thereof; (2) permanently cease and desist all unauthorized use and hosting of images using the ASSASSIN’S CREED mark and Ms. Raymond’s name and/or likeness; (3) provide us with the name and contact information of the person who originally created and/or posted the Image; and (4) complete, execute, and return to me the enclosed Declaration by November 16, 2007 to confirm that you are complying with Ubisoft’s demand.
While Ubisoft hopes to resolve this matter quickly and without resort to further legal action, Ubisoft reserves all rights to seek appropriate legal relief, including attorneys’ fees, injunctive relief, statutory damages, costs, and enhanced damages.
Sincerely,
David Anderson

Oh wow...
I can understand they might be shitty about them using the Assassin's Creed trademark or whatever but surely a webcomic artist can say whatever the fuck they like about Jade Raymond in the same way that people make thousands of comics about George Bush etc?
There is a difference between doing that, and doing that to make money.
Of course, there is the flaw in Ubisofts plan... I don't think SA were making a profit from the toon.

One of the old trailers has Lonely Soul by UNKLE and it was awesome. Except internet people were bitching about how it was inappropriate to the time period and such, whiny buggers.
It's pretty much the same ad, only the good one has more violence and some blood:
