That "Assassins Creed or Mass Effect" thread is a bit of a mess so here's a new one.
My copy came a day early and I've played a few hours now, it's very impressive but there's definitely flaws. I'm hoping I'll feel more comfortable as I go along, because the controls are taking some getting used to and the game is only just beginning to take off the 'training wheels' and stop treating me like a baby. The supposedly secret background story is a little irksome just because it feels totally superfluous so far, but it's not very intrusive and maybe it'll become more interesting later on. There is a definite crackdown vibe about it, but in a much more reserved (and less silly) way.
Free running across rooftops and diving into carts of hay willy-nilly makes everything better, anyway.

I'm still um-ing and ah-ing over whether I want to get a PS3 now just because this game is out. There's no decent PS3 bundles on though. I'm gonna have to decide kinda soon though, before the money left from my student loan runs out :p
Don't get the PS3 one, apparently it has some pretty bad frame rate problems in the last third of the game.

I'm not getting a 360. End of.
Please don't start a console war about that, though. I'll be getting a PS3 because it has the games I want, not because I hate Xbox for no good reason.

I'm pretty sure the Gamespot review said the PS3 version has a better framerate.
Speaking of framerate, I'm pleased to say that it seems very solid so far in AC. I worry about framerate with ubisoft games, it really irritated me in GRAW and the last splinter cell game.
Well, IGN sez...
"These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it's obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions."
Anyway.
Can't wait for this game...roll on tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get to GAME early enough for my free preorder hoody!!

Yeah pretty much, there is a chance of failure in the sense that if you direct him across a gap too large he will fall to the ground, but there's no timing involved in jumping or anything. The game generally seems really easy so far but I'm hoping it gets more challenging as it goes on.
Game are doing a pretty cool deal where you get the game cheap if you trade in orange box.

I can't be arse with spoiler tags, so heres a big warning
SPOILERS BELOW
nothing major, as I'm only up to the first main target
Its awesome and all but the guards in the towns and dotted round the fields/cliffs are complete twats. I can't go past them without being attacked. Actually now that I think about it..maybe I'm being done for nicking a new horse every two minutes? Meh, whatever. Everything seems alot more balanced in the towns, the guards act more like I imaginged, they do chase you and attack, but only after you've been an arse to the townsfolk or knifed a guard.
Another thing that bugged me was the Samus style stripping of abilitys in the beginning. It makes more sense than when Samus trips and her shit falls down a drain...but it pissed me off in this more than in Metroid. I think its because in Metroid you lose about four things which you've only had five minutes to play with, where as in this you lose at least eight things...mind you it doesnt help one of them is the throwing knifes and short blade that I loved so much.
Speaking of weapons, the combat can be reasonibly intense, but rather frustrating due to its one button layout. Even more so as I can't counterattack anymore. I actually end up wining fights using throw and hidden dagger combos. One they are down on the floor, you can stab them for a one hit kill. Oh throwing people off buildings is another one of my winning tactics. All hat said I think it could have been a little better around the edges in that respect.
Altaïr is a pretty badass character so far, although he's coming off as a right dick so far. Desmond on the other hand really interests me. When you talk to the woman doctor alone it uncovers bits about his past, which is drawing me in somewhat...I think they did this "twist" thing pretty well so far overall.
The free running is by far my favorite bit, leaping, climbing, swinging and running around at heights is superb and really makes the game. True its a little too easy seeming, but that doesnt change how statisfying it is to hop across four beams only to swing off another, latch onto a windowsil, flip onto the roof and then end it all by diving into a pile of hay.
Overall I am really enjoying it, as Splush said it does have faults, but it is a blast so far. I recon the people who rated it under 8 are complete spacks who were looking for faults in a game that was admitedly hyped to hell. Then again, maybe it goes downhill from where I am.
Fin.

It is weird how guards freak out if they see a horse going at anything above a slow trot in open country. What's wrong with galloping down a big empty road, I ask you? Maybe it is because I keep taking random horses that aren't mine, I never thought of that. It usually seems like you can just keep galloping and you'll get away though, so it doesn't really matter.

If guards are chasing you in the kingdom what I do is gallop around in a circle on my horse and just run all the guards over, they usually don't whack you off the horse and if they do just use your speed to your advantage until you find another horse.
Oh yeah also does anyone know how to kill the second target? He came out through the main building but went back in again, I went round the corner blending in with the crowd and the target had appeared again so I just had to combat him, what I really wanted to do was assassinate him though.

QFT. The constant attacking in "The Kingdom" did my head in, but I think it's because it's controlled by King James (who's at war with the Assasin's Guild). The first proper town you get to (Damascus - Poor District) is MUCH better in terms of being discovered and escaping etc.
Another thing that bugged me was the Samus style stripping of abilitys in the beginning. It makes more sense than when Samus trips and her shit falls down a drain...but it pissed me off in this more than in Metroid. This also annoyed me. I was like "Holy shit, if this is the default character, things are gonna be AWESOME!" Then when once you lose the skills you have at the beginning, I get the impression that the whole game will just be leading back to that level of power/skill.
Speaking of weapons, the combat can be reasonibly intense, but rather frustrating due to its one button layout. Even more so as I can't counterattack anymore. Once you unlock gangs of vigilantes in damascus (by helping villagers), you can lure guards into them, get them stuck, then close the distance for an easy assasination kill. It's a fantastic way to earn both the Eagle's Will achievement and the Eagle's Claw.
I'm very satisfied with the game atm, but I want my uber powers back! And finding 100 flags in the kingdom with all those twats attacking you is gonna be fun. Don't even get me started on Damascus (found 4 in 2 hours play time).

Has anybody been able to jump off a ledge and do a mid-air assassination with the hidden blade, as seen in some of the promotional movies. That looks really cool but what I inevitably end up doing is stumbling clumsily into the guy and having to hack him to death with my sword, then run off sheepishly. I wanna jump of roofs on to peoples' heads, is that so much to ask?
Dingboy Bob The Slammy Walrus Bitch
17-11-2007, 07:14 PM
Do you mean the one where you fly through the air and stab your blade into their face, knocking them to the floor? If so yes I've done it, was just random though as I just button mash and it kills the enemies - usually.
Splush
17-11-2007, 07:22 PM
Yeah that. I always try to stand up on a ledge, select the hidden blade and then target a guy but it seems like once I've targeted them they magically know I'm in combat mode and I can't jump on them unaware. I was thinking maybe it's an ability you get given to you with a promotion at some point.

I like doing the "hang off the side of a building and assasinate" move.
Let's you hang on the edge of a roof before leaping onto your enemy and killing them. For some reason, the targeting always allows them to throw me off before I can get the knife in :(
Yarr, I have only just gained my throwing knifes back, so I have to pick up the pace a bit.

Yay, I managed to stop being a mong and have been merrily plunging my hidden blade into unsuspecting guards all night :o
This game is growing on me a lot. You know how all the reviews seemed to say "great for the first couple of hours, then it gets repetitive"? I'm totally disagreeing with that so far, the first couple of hours were totally boring because it was piss-easy and altair didn't have enough equipment and abilities to be any fun, but now it's started getting harder and altair is becoming more badass it's way more fun. Admittedly the 'investigation' phase has already become very repetitive, but the assassination/escape stuff is great fun.

I've just been using them to kill guards who have spotted me but are too far away to stab quickly. It's pretty badass to stab on guard and then kill his mate with a throwing knife before he can shout anything. I haven't tried them with actual assassination targets yet.

Pros: Cool game world; really beautiful looking; free running and climbing are really fun; assassination missions generally fun; it's not short.
Cons: Not really anything to do in the huge, beautiful world other than follow the main mission which seems like a real waste; investigation tasks are boring and repetitive; sci-fi premise seems fairly superfluous; probably not much replay value.
But I haven't finished it yet, so I might have more to say later.

Good game but wayyyyyyyyyy to easy, especially once you have counter attack for fighting
Graphics are brilliant, I love looking from viewpoints
Free running away from guards is sooo fun though :) I love rooftops
And of course assassinating random guards in the street and casually walking off like nothing has happened
I think the highest point i've been on is on the palace thingy in the rich area of dalmascus (or whatever), there's a HUGE tower
A good fun game but to easy and to repetitive, I give it a 7/10
And I'm struggling with the concept of how hay saves you from falling from over 100 foot

Is this tall damascus tower the cathedral? It's either in Damascus or Acre but if you can find it, get onto the roof and scale the spire (all the way to the top, then climb up onto the top of the crucifix), it's the most epic view in the entire game!
There's no quick, safe way down though, so feel free to experience the longest, most visually exciting death leap possible.
I bought an Assassins Creed guide and an artbook in GAME earlier, I only wanted the artbook because game art is always freaking awesome and the guide was free with it, and its really cool.

When you get back the ability to grab onto ledges as you're falling with the B button climbing/falling becomes more satisfying, before you get that power it's a choice between climbing all the way down or falling all the way down. Actually, there is one thing I thought could have been better. The interrogation missions. I was expecting it to be some kind of mini-game, where you corner the target, start by threatening them, if they don't talk, beat them up a little bit, and so on. It's not very interesting to just punch them a few times then they spill the beans all at once.

I finished the game last night. The ending is both satisfying and completely unsatisfying in different ways. It was a good game in general, but they could have cut out half the stuff you had to do and made it a great short game instead of a good long game. The thing that strikes me the most is what a waste of artists' effort the whole thing turned out to be, the cities and the kingdom are so huge and beautiful but there isn't really that much to do in them. You only really have to visit each district once. It's not a bad thing, it's better than the play area being too small, it's just weird that they'd spend that much time on making a world and relatively little time on giving you things to do in it. I definitely look forward to a sequel though, they could do really amazing things with the concept.
I think those 7/10 reviews were closer to the truth than the 9/10 reviews, but it's definitely a very strong 7/10, and worth playing.
I didn't like the amount of combat there was towards the end, they're obviously really confident in how good their combat is and I don't think it's really deserved. It's fun watching him cut dudes' heads off with counter attacks but it gets a bit old the hundredth time, and the situations where you're completely surrounded by soldiers and they each patiently wait to be killed are just laughable. Too many of the assassinations ended up in big fights where you're basically just waiting for the target to take his turn to attack you so that you can do him some damage.

Have you tried using counter kills? I haven't had an opportunity to use them yet, but I guess they'd be better against large numbers than anything else.
Also, I believe there was some talk a few pages back of how to do the move seen in videos when you kill your target with the blade after jumping from a rooftop. I did it last night. You lock on, hold R1 (or whatever the Xbox equivalent is), then press forward, square and X at the same time, I think. It worked for me sneaking up on those Templar guys. I don't know if you any of you guys have encountered them at all, but they are not to be messed with. Last night one of them cut my horse right out from under me.
Just arrived in Jerusalem on the way to my second assassination. I've been doing a lot of exploring, finding those flags and so on.

It's very different. The stealth is more like Hitman than Thief, and there's not as much need for being stealthy as you might think. It's an action game with the occasional sneaky bit, rather than an actual stealth game.
I wish people would make more games like Thief, that series is so amazing. A thief-style game in the AC world could work really well, too.

I don't think the combat is as button bashy as you say. It can be, if you don't bother doing anything else. At the moment I favour either guarding until I have an opportunity for a counter-attack, or grabbing them and throwing them to the ground. Also, if you throw them into certain wooden structures, it collapses and kills them.
Sneaking up on rooftop archers with the hidden blade is fun too :D

Bah. People don't appreciate a good story these days.
I thought the story was above-average, but it took a while to get going, I didn't really appreciate the 'real world' bits until near the end. The main thing I didn't like with the story was how the events in the past had become this genuinely intriguing story of manipulation, political skulduggery and moral ambiguity but at the end it all came down to a clichéd shiny mystical ball that gives you magic powers. I thought they were going the route of the artefact actually being powerless, and just acting as a symbol for the political power of the templars, but then all of a sudden I was fighting a disney villain with an orb of power who can multiply himself and teleport around the place and I was all like *sigh*

Sadly, I'm forced to agree.
The whole game walked the path of "governments and religious leaders use lies to control their people", making me think the game would reveal some kind of idea which would make you think deeply and philosophically about the nature of right and wrong, life and death, good and evil but, sadly, the ending turned out exactly as clichéd as I had expected. To say I saw the "Al mualim is actually the bad guy" ending coming would be a gross understatement as I was trying to work out how hard it'd be to kill him at the end of the game based on the ever-improving skill of the soldiers I was facing.
Another thing which annoyed me was the actual ending of the game. You come out of the Animus, listen to some dialogue which makes you itch to get on with the story of Abstergo, the doctors etc. then it all kind of...ends. You get the achievement for finishing the game seemingly at random in a quite uninteresting part of the game where, in my mind at least, you should be lead you on into another exciting plot device. Having read the text on the wall and the secret achievement for the strange vision, I was left to stumble around the animus/conference room trying to solve a mysterious rune puzzle which actually didn't exist in the first place. Of course it eventually dawned on me that the game was in fact over.
Good game overall, but certainly the cities and missions could have used a lot more variety (as opposed to "go here, kill this, go there, climb a building") as well as a lot more interactivity with the environment itself like conversations with citizens or buying items/equipment from market stalls. I suppose this would make it quite RPG'ish, but the story itself improves your character in an RPG'ish fasion and, having read stories before the release stating you'd be able to customise weapons etc, I felt this aspect of the game fell a little flat.

The glowing magic artefact just reminded me how immature game stories are, it was like they wanted to do a story all about espionage and political power struggles but felt like they had to toss in a magic orb just to make it a 'game story'. It reminds me of Final Fantasy XII to an extent, which did a pretty good job of making an interesting political story in a fictional world but also threw in a bunch of magic artefacts as if a story won't hold our attention if there aren't glowing orbs everywhere. Although to be fair it's not like Assassin's Creed was totally devoid of the supernatural before the glowing orb appeared, the whole concept of genetic memory is pretty fantastical.
The ending in the real world was so bizarrely anticlimatic that I actually kind of liked it. I did wonder if that's exactly how they meant it to be, or whether it was rushed a bit. Either way, I thought it kind of gave you a feeling for how bored and helpless desmond must be feeling in that situation. He knows there's exciting stuff going on and a glimmer of hope (with the girl being an assassin and all) but he's still a helpless prisoner who has to wander around being confused and frustrated.

I love stuff like the hidden flags. I came back to GTA3 about two or three years after I got it to track down the last hidden packages. When I found the last one, I was kicking myself, because it was in quite an obvious place.
As for the flags, and other hidden stuff, in Assassin's Creed, I've been exploring for it as I travel between areas. I have about 35/100 of the flags in the kingdom, all the Masyaf flags, and some from Damascus and Jerusalem too. I've also assassinated 10 of the Templar knights. Those guys are really tough in combat.
Some of those places in the kingdom are unbelievably well guarded. I was forced to kill the guards at the road up to one of the viewpoints, since there was no way to sneak past.
I've just done the second assassination in Jerusalem, by the way. I'm working my way through this game slowly :p I'd probably be twice as far through if I didn't have other demands on my time though.

Actually I'm pretty sure one of the tips the game gives you at a loading screen is that guards won't intervene in fist-fights, but perhaps it depends on who you're punching. It seems like if you go up and punch a random person in the street guards probably should intervene.
I think the acceptible fist fights are with the "thugs" who you can pickpocket. Oh and throwing the poor is okay also.

It's weird how they recorded different voice actors saying the exact same line, as if they went out of their way to make the NPC dialogue extra repetitive. I'm thinking of the people who you can save from being mugged or whatever, they always say that line about going home and not leaving home for a while, but they actually went to the bother of getting different voice actors in to say that exact same line. It shows uncommon dedication to repetitiveness!

in grand theft auto, people on the street say heaps of different thing depending on the situation and who they are.
you'd think that if ubisoft were going to use the same line they would at least not have looped it.

Find a thug(these people often have hoods or really obvious pouches) target them and pickpocket them. You can also kill them but then you only get 1 knife.

Yeah thats one thing I don't like about Assassins creed and similar games. No save feature, I look in the booklet and it also failed to explain. Leaves me feeling edgy at pressing quit since I don't know when it last saved and how much gameplay I'd lose.
As far as I can remember, you can save in the start menu. It also saves automatically after nearly everything, unless you turn it off.

I am absolutely awful at this game. Just killed the 6th guy - the big guy at the execution in Jerusalem. I worked out that I could get close to him using the scholars and I waited till he was the closest but i couldn't do a quick hidden blade kill even though he was feet away from me. I had to kill about 30 guards :(
What am I doing wrong?

^I love the way he stops, looks around, and then keeps doing it.
