View Full Version : Laptop Advice, with some sex

No sex really, but sex to a tech whizz is like a lightbulb to a moth.

Service please Techy Nerds...for thou art like PC World, except you know something about computers

I am looking into buying a new laptop eventually. Possibly around Christmas time, possibly later. (or possibly in about 10 minutes, I sure as hell dont trust my current one to last the rest of term, it had better not, but it may force my hand) Anyway, I'm aiming to spend between 500 and 800, preferably somewhere in the middle and I need it for various things. I do need it for games and therefore a decent graphics card is a must. Now I'm not looking to play Bioshock on full graphics or map the entire galaxy with a webcam, so I'm not exactly looking for state of the art; if I can comfortably play Medieval Total War 2 (which I pretty much can already on a Radeon Xpress 200M) and whatever life and boredom decide to throw at me anytime soon, I will be happy enough.

Anyways, could you give me any recommendations within these criteria or as close to as possible:

Dual Core Processor (Seems pretty standard these days)
Capable Graphics Card
100GB+ hard drive, preferably bigger (I have an external but its inconvenient and temperamental at best)
WINDOWS - Advise a Mac and I will curse you so you have an electric eel in your bath alongside a small salmon which will smell when it burns - I know they are good, but they are not good for games, they are not good for price and they are not right for me.
Wireless Enabled

Or if you cant be arsed, for which I would not blame you, any advice on where to look wouldnt be bad. I've looked on Play, which would be useful if I knew shit about Graphics Cards which seem to be named by a combination of numbers with no relevance to their performance. I've looked on Alienware, which is damned sexy but slightly over budget.

kthxbye

eBuyer (http://www.ebuyer.com) have a choice of laptops ranging from cheap to powerful.

I saw this one (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134713) which you might like. £500.88 inc VAT.

Although bear in mind eBuyer is a company founded by Satan, will not send you the components you ordered, and then charge you to have them delivered again.

... cheap though. Just don't buy their own-brand stuff - ever.

Back on topic:

The Acer 5920G has been mentioned numerous times around here for laptops in your category, and is indeed the one I will be getting myself at Christmas (unless I am tempted by a 360).

Play.com has it here (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/654/861/-/3477717/Acer-Aspire-5920G-Core-2-Duo-T7300-2-0GHz-2GB-250GB-HD-DVD-15-4-Vista-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html?searchtype=genre) for £789.99, although you should be able to find it slightly cheaper elsewhere. There are also several versions available too, so watch out - the main differences are the inclusions of Bluetooth, a 1GB TurboMemory module and the newer ones have HD-DVD drives.

A slightly cheaper (but still good in my opinion) option are the newer Compaq Presarios - their V6600 series now have GeForce 7150M as standard, and look very slick.

£599.99 on (please dont shoot me) PC World (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/Laptops/Home+&+Office+Laptops/COMPAQ/PRESSARIO+V6630EM/641589)
Same on Dixons (http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/Computing/Laptops/Standard+Laptops/COMPAQ/PRESSARIO+V6630EM/641589)

I'm still using a M2000 that I picked up on eBay, and even that just about handles games and things (although I've only tried it with fairly simple things - Madden 2007 and the like)

Hope this helps :)

Just for information, Dixons and PC World are run by the same company. Currys too.

Yus, I found they said they had 500 USB mouses in stock, then changed the QFC after I ordered one, they then said they had none in stock and re issued a new order including a new consignment and delivery charge from City Link. I rapidly cancelled.

Some of their own brand stuff is ok though.

Why? And not so long ago I was thinking of applying for a job with them, though I think that was mainly because I spend so much money with them that I wanted a discount :p

Who keeps plussing that cybus guy? He had 4 minuses before.

Cybus, either you're here just to troll, or you're an under-13 immature retard (since you didn't give your DOB and you act like a 5 year old). Either way, hang around in beginners and/or get adopted before you get banned.

eBuyer have a shitty reputation overall, as shown by other responses, and the two other people I know to have ordered from them have had problems too.

On the other hand there's responses saying they are great, and my friends and I have had nothing but good service... hmmm. Looks like it's even stevens.

Great value and on weekdays you get one day delivery. Have a look at the laptops, there are a wide variety.

And believe me, I get loads of stuff from these guys. They're reliable.
