Havnt really done much on it yet, but from what I can tell its exactly like KOTOR except its a shooter at the same time, I actually love it. The first part of it is very boring and misleading though.

Something cool about it:

Your weapons have an accuracy level, if its low you dont keep your weapon steady and it kindve moves around (Freaking annoying for sniping) and when you get it higher you keep it more steady etc.

KOTOR for me is like a genre on its own lol hard to explain

Splush

I'm delighted with it so far. It definitely feels like KOTOR given a next-gen overhaul, which is what I'm after. The combat feels a lot more immediate and visceral than the traditional RPG combat too, which is good. The reviewers complaining about the lack of tutorials are complete pussies, it explains everything if you aren't some ADHD kid who instinctively mashes the A button as soon as a text box comes up, and there's even a tutorial option in the menus. I guess it could still take people a while to get the hang of things if they don't normally play RPGs, but probably less so than with KOTOR.

I did something I never usually do and made a female character, because I saw how realistic the dude looked in the character creator and thought "hang on, if I'm going to be staring at this for hours I want it to be pretty" and made a female instead. Now I feel like a gender traitor.

PC Gamer seem to be pretty sure that Mass Effect is coming to PC soonish (http://www.johng.co.uk/2006/10/21/breaking-news-mass-effect-coming-to-pc-in-2007/), which if true will make me happy because otherwise I would have had to have blown a load of cash on a 360. I haven't played KOTOR, but it sounds like exactly the sort of game I like, and Mass Effect looks like the bestest thing ever, and living without it is not a prospect I want to entertain.

I bet you really made a girl character for the lesbian sex.

Anyway I think I am upto the last mission, The part where I cant go on the citadel because I stole normandy but im exploring uncharted planets

finished mass effect, its really short if you only follow the main story planets.

Oh by the way, is Soldier the best class for a noob?

Splush
23-11-2007, 07:39 PM
The human military of the future is really unprofessional. They'll go about recruiting random aliens to serve aboard their ships based on nothing but a couple of lines of dialogue, and apparently soldiers have to buy their weapons from the quartermaster with their own money. Money which, incidentally, they earn by gambling in nightclubs while on duty.

RPGs are so bloody silly.

(and awesome)

I dunno, I went vanguard, the aggressive shotgun nutter type character with some magic skills. Soldier seems like it might be most simple because you can concentrate on shooting guys and have other people in your party doing magic and whatnot.

Dingboy Bob The Slammy Walrus Bitch
23-11-2007, 09:16 PM
Oh ok, just tried Vanguard and I couldn't really get the hang of it so it looks like its Soldier for me.

Damn, Wrex sure is badass. That Fist guy wasn't much of a boss.

Mat^
23-11-2007, 10:53 PM
I chose infiltrator because I like shooting things and opening boxes, boxes that are locked.

It's worked out pretty well, I'm using the turian dude and wrex in my party, so I've got low biotic, average tech and high combat.

Although I think that Wrex's character design is too silly, what with how the weapons fit on his back, and I might switch him for ashley because she's a bit sexy.

The quarian race stuff is really interesting, I must have spent 20mins talking to the quarian girl in the engine room, woah.

I've been trying to go paragon, although I got two renegade points when I sexed up the blue lady, which was anti climatic at best, whatev'.

Mass effect is the sexiest game.

Splush
23-11-2007, 11:16 PM
Ashley seemed like a bitch and I dropped her from the party like a rock at my first opportunity

I thought the amount of detail they bothered to put in about quarian society was impressive too, funny we both bothered wasting time chatting to her about it.

Mat^
23-11-2007, 11:55 PM
Yeah I'm not sure about the ashley bitch thing, did you do the stuff about the dude wanting his wifes remains? If she's in the party she talks to him about the wife because she was in her platoon and it's a bit aww.

Kaiden is a massively wooden arse however.

Whoa, this was one of, or the best game I have ever played.

I was gripped from start to finish with the story line, I actually really cared about the characters and npc's which is a first for me, and I shed a tear at the end when Liara shook her head, thinking the mother of her unborn child was dead :'( . I really enjoyed it and was ecstatic to hear that it was a trillogy, and that they will have alot more time to make it better in the squals, considering it was so great already.

Mat^
24-11-2007, 04:19 PM
I take back what I said about Kaiden, I had a bit of a chat with him and he seems alright, not enough to put him into my team though.

I'd probably throw Tali in there if her armour stuff wasn't ridiculusly poor.

Sticking with Garrus and Wrex because they seem like a good bet, I've got this pink armour on Wrex right now and it is lollllll, if I were an internet media superstar I'd be doing something about a "hello krogan" doll.

24-11-2007, 05:42 PM
Argh, I don't know if I should stick with soldier or not, I've currently got a 14 Soldier, just done Feros but I'm relying on my team mates for opening locked stuff and magic (which I just realised was mega effective) but Feros was so annoying and I don't really want to replay it again... :/

I was thinking maybe I should get the game complete and then mess about with a magic character on the new game + thing or whatever?

They are in the Local Cluster I believe.

God I loved this game. From start to finish I was hooked and I can't wait to play through again to see what other endings I might achieve. I played Vanguard and didn't like it too much though there were a few biotics I used a lot. I just ended up being a crazy shotgun bandit. It kind of irritates me how each character has to carry four weapons even if they only ever use one or two of them. It's just messy.

I'm a vanguard, I switch between shotgun and pistol depending on range. I'm thinking I might have preferred to be an infiltrator and sit back with my sniper rifle while ordering my squad mates to advance. It's fun playing a coward.

I suppose you could just train Garrus up to use a sniper rifle, but I can't see the friendly AI being too good with it. Oh also, can I still stop Wrex from dieing if I train Intimidate instead of Charm? I'm thinking of using him as the close range guy but don't want to spend a lot of cash on him if he's just going to die.

Mat^
27-11-2007, 05:18 PM
Garrus is a pretty decent sniper user for me, but I tend to have him as an assault user as I maxed that out on him.

I don't actually know why I have garrus in my team, his way of doing things is the opposite of what I want, maybe I just want someone there going "No! Kill him" to make my "Nah man, he needs to go to trial!" more emotionally effective.

That bit with Dr.Heart is a good example of this, if you've done it.

Splush
27-11-2007, 05:34 PM
My squad has been either Garrus/Liara or Wrex/Tali.

Wrex is just an awesome character, and I dig how Liara throws people up into the air so I can shotgun them mercilessly at my leisure, but sadly having Wrex and Liara in a party means my party has no tech at all.

Garrus is kind of an irritating character, he reminds me of Toby from the US version of The Office, really meek and too nice for his own good. His story is "I'm bored of doing things by the book and want some crazy action!" but his personality is "I want to speak really softly and do everything by the book!"

Rhiyo
27-11-2007, 05:36 PM
wrex and garrus are also a sexy couple.

My (female) character was having an innocent chat with Kaiden and I suddenly found myself in a situation where all of my dialogue options were flirtatious, and Kaiden loved it. It was so bloody creepy, for one terrifying moment I realised how awful it is being a girl being chatted up by a cheesy bloke.

I think I'm going to deal with it maturely by never talking to him again.

Mat^
27-11-2007, 06:28 PM
I quite like some of Kaiden's stories though, I wasn't a huge fan of his character to start with but doing some chatting with him gives you a feel for why his personality is as it is.

This is the best game. I love it so much, it deserves game of the year awards all over the shop but I suspect that isn't going to happen. The dialogue alone makes it so much better than the norm, I've got so many genuine laughs from this game.

Also unintentional laughs. Have you guys encountered the "Shepard...Wrex..." scenario? If you talk to Wrex and then immediately choose "goodbye" you can have them stand their saying each others names indefinitely. Game of the year right there.

Mat^
28-11-2007, 01:32 PM
Yeah, I like talking to wrex because of that, also if you leave during some of his expositions you say something along the lines of "I don't really care, wrex".

I liked it.

Heard the story about him and the asari commando? It's stuff like that that makes it a good game, things that don't even need to be in it but just are, plus entertaining.

Also, what the hell is with the overabundance of Pheonix armour in my game, everyone in my team is wearing some kind of Pheonix V and it's like a pinksplosion, a gay-gasm if you will.

So yeah.

Also on the normandy lift I try and position the camera so it doesn't have any "moving bits" on screen (this is impossible, but keeps me occupied).

Splush
15-12-2007, 06:58 PM
I like to use the wall tiles to try to work out how far the normandy lift is travelling. Most of the lifts in the game don't have visible moving bits so for all you know they're travelling a really long way and that would explain the long waits, but the one in the normandy you can watch the tiles and it blatantly only travels about five metres. This game is the in-depth lift simulator of my dreams

I must say I thought it was a fantastic ending and I'm glad it ended with a bit of a chit-chat.

I think I might make my character for my next play through now. Yes that is an awesome idea. Since I was female first time I shall go male. Hmmm I'm not a big fan of 'John,' I think I'll give our protagonist a female name, then I can be total renegade and pretend that nobody ever comments on my first name coz they know they would get a smack in the puss. Abaigeal Shepard.

EDIT: Boo, I hope the male voice grows on me, because I don't like it nearly as much as the female.

Are we still talking about Mass Effect?

So I heard somthing like they are going to do some downloadable content that will link the first game to the next.

I'm wandering if you will just download some stuff, then when you complete the game there will be a few more systems to play through, or will it be stand alone. Perhaps it might aid in tieing some decisions you made into a single result. Perhaps it will be linked to the second book thats coming out.

Anybody read the books by the way?

Is it kinda sad that I would like there to be more politics in the game?

I made my character look like Adam Sandler.

Just managed to try out an attack combo that I thought of and it works really well.

(I use Liara and Garrus)

Get Liara to use Singularity (Max) to pull a group towards the team, and then get Garrus to use Damping (Max) when they are close enough. Killed about 6 Geth in one go. It could be better if I fashioned a Warp in there or something.

Hello

I bought this game yesterday and so far it has been pure awesome. I would like to talk about it but this thread seems to be full of spoilers. Shame on you all.

This game would be better if it didnt lag every 10 frames of animation or so.

I mean hell, Gears of War had far more detailed worlds and graphics and ran fine.

Still, Mass is good. It's like Blade Runner, Star Trek, and Virus all rolled together.

Agreed. The framerate keeps dropping and textures are always popping in. it is quite annoying.

However, I'm having so much fun being a shotgun wielding jedi... I mean spectre... that I think I'll let it pass.

By the way I am a Vanguard and pretty much always use Ashley and Kandai because I am a specieist.

Hello.

I have heard that once yo go on the last mission you cannot do anymore of the side-missions?

is this true? If so could someone possibly try and tell me in a spoiler free way which mission that is. I have just killed off Ashley with a Nuke and fought Saren a little bit. So telling me what happens after this would not be nice.

Thank you.

What a freakin' nutter. I can't believe what i've just read! people that go and force sex upon another obviously have a pre-disposition towards violence and are clearly not mentally stable, video games cannot be blamed for that.

I love Mass Effect and have played it through several times but funnily enough i don't feel like raping anyone yet, maybe one more play through will do it...

It was epic in every way.

Can't wait for the sequel...

so i just finished this
it was the PC version, so i have kind of an excuse for being soooo late to this party
it's pretty much the best game ever?
if it weren't for the glitches, that previous statement wouldn't have a questionmark. or a "pretty much" qualifier.
there was this one glitch that made it so that if a weapon overheated, it NEVER COOLED DOWN. that was really fun, on the last boss.

also, does anyone know if they've released any information about the sequel at all?
also ALSO, so that i don't have to finish the game again (even though i probably will) can someone tell me what happens at the end if you save the council?
i was pretty mad at the ambassador for making the council into a human dictatorship. i was like "fuck! which of these dialogue options ends with me going back in time and not killing the council so that this dickbag doesn't get to be leader of the free galaxy?" turns out none of them do. :(

in conclusion, any game that lets you have lesbian sex with a blue alien is A OK in my book.

I should probably get round to playing this game. Massive RPGs and hot alien sex is right up my alley.

Oh it's pretty much the same. The council members make humans a council race and you choose either the Ambassador (dickwad) or your old captain guy.

I have a feeling that David Anderson will be killed off come the start of the second game anyway so you are stuck with Udina no matter what.

I'm guessing there will be a human male and female replacement for either Ashley or Kaiden (but the male replaces Ashley and the female replaces Kaiden, just to fuck up the romance storyline). With the mission kinda going cold, if alive, Wrex would have left. Liara will still be around. Garrus will probably be a Spectre. Tali would have returned to the Migrant Fleet.

tom93
13-08-2008, 07:10 AM
nah i reckon that more likely udina runs things behind the scenes no matter what, using his bureaucracy

Roxit
13-08-2008, 07:24 AM
It will be intresting to see how they do it, because you do make some big decisions. I thought the downloadable content would patch it all togather, but judgeing by the first part, perhaps not, since it's not based after the main storyline.

Norbington

Wrex should definitely be in the next one. He's the best character.

I always liked the Turrian dude that you befriended, Garrus I think?

He had a scouter on his eye and I was dieing for him to scream "ITS OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND" at some point while crushing it.

I want some form of pet. I think I actually prefer Garrus to Wrex. It's very close. I tend to always have Tali in my party though so I can unlock shit and stuff, plus she has other uses. I'm thinking that maybe Quarians are cat like people or somthing.

This game is great! The only bad thing I can report is that there's no light brown hair option... I chose what I thought was light brown but ingame it's ginger. My character is ginger. Oh but the guy who voiced Carth from KoToR is in it so all is good.

Roxit
15-08-2008, 04:55 AM
I'm fine with there being no long hair for your character since you are military, but I can't remember anybody else having long hair. Plus there were too many Humans on the citadel compared to that of other races.

tom93
15-08-2008, 12:56 PM
Wrex should definitely be in the next one. He's the best character.

since you can kill him in the "stop the stopping of the genophage" mission, i doubt he's gonna be integral

I'm really glad I bought this game, it's great. Wrex is my fave character "We're not gonna die, bitch" made me laugh.
I seem to prefer the alien teammates; they're just a lot more interesting.
I gave Kaiden a go on this mission -along with wrex- and I think I'll be going back to the Garrus/Wrex combo after this mission. They seem to engage together more.

Roxit
19-08-2008, 03:37 AM
I saved Wrex by doing that mission where you kill that guy who has his family armour then he is like 'I'm beginning to like you Shepherd.'

So he likes you and stays loyal.

Dunno if I have found out his whole story (can't be arsed going down that lift tbh). Is there more to that female bounty hunter who he thought he had blown up then she sent him a message saying 'better luck next time.' ?
