I'm in two minds here. Sony is a well known brand, and they have successfully crossed normal 'brand' lines before - look at the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones, for example. Or the Cyber-shot (Sony camera brand) mobile phones.

So if anyone could make a decent gaming phone, it'd be Sony. But I don't see them doing it. Because it is essentially doomed to N-Gage style failure unless it is vaguely PSP-ish in gameplay and graphics. And then it'd have to be a PSP with a phone tacked on. And a PSP, as I'm sure you are all aware, is too big to be a comfortable phone.

Maybe 5 years down the line when technology has improved enough to miniaturise the PSP further. But I don't see this happening any time soon.

I would guess it would more likely be a branding thing (like the walkman phones, as basstard mentioned) than a specific game playing handset. It could be a serious of handsets with controls slightly less crap than usual for games, but still recognisable as a phone.

I believe Nokia are relaunching N-Gage with a similar approach, they've discovered that nobody wants a games machine that is also a phone, so they're trying it the other way round.

Mobile phone gaming is apparently huge in Japan so there must be a way to get people into it, but I'm pretty sceptical personally.

It's pretty big in Europe, too - I remember seeing some figures (from someone I know who works in a java game company, natch) saying the market is worth a stupidly and unexpectedly large number.

A quick google only brings up worldwide figures though - $4.3 billion, it is worth this year.

The other thing is that java games require much less budget than big console games so it gives small developers a chance.

It also means that the majority of java or mobile games suck cock.
