View Full Version : Best Christmas Movie In The World... Ever!

What do you think is the best Christmas movie? I know, it is hard. Most of them are wank.

I would probably say Die Hard. Honestly, it probably is the best film set at christmas. Although I love Gremlins... oh and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. I know totally associate New York with movies like Home Alone and Ghostbusters because I watched them constantly when I grew up.

Elf is actually pretty good, I think. It has a charm without getting too over the toply cheery like most Christmas films.

I also like Bad Santa, but that tends to divide people.

Yes, and Muppets Christmas Carol is also pretty good. I like it anyway, best Muppet film.

It is the only christmas film I like. It is not the best muppets film though. Muppets Treasure Island is way better.

Just reminded me of Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas. I used to love it as a kid. Much more than The Snowman.

I love Home Alone (saw the second one first so ... that one is more special to me.)

Has anyone seen the new Orange Wednesdays advert with Macaulay Culkin in? Thought it was funny.

I love Bad Santa, mainly because it completely turns the whole 'learning a lesson' thing on its head, to a point at least. The part where it suddenly cuts to Billy Bob Thornton bouncing a twelve year old kid's head off a tree with his fist to the sound of a merry christmas jingle is fantastic. Who needs an ethical solution to a problem anyway?

Not as good as the book however. But I still loved it. I tend to read Hogfather every christmas. Howver this year is looking unlikey as I have to finish The Stand by Stephen King first. Ho-Hum.

The Nightmare Before Christmas.

this, and

Oh that's easy- Muppets Christmas Charol

this, however, much more this

Muppets Treasure Island is way better.

also, this

The Snowman.

but 10 x more Father Christmas.

But yeah, as a christmassy film, A muppet christmas carol wins.

oh yeah, and this:

Seriously, I can still sing all the songs.

although I liked the hogfather tv adaption (never as good as the book), it doesn't seem christmassy to me.

PS. is this the most annoying post ever? if it is, sorry :p

Its The Nightmare Before Christmas for me folks, just thinking about the visuals and score makes me happy. For REAL Christmas cheer though it has to be the Snowman, I'm sorry but its a family tradition to sit an watch it, was aweseom the first year we had surround sound!

EDIT: Muppet's Christmas Carol! How could I forget (esp. as its mentioned in the thread and I actually read it ;p) The ghosts and door knocker scared me first time I saw them!

I love the Santa Clause. It's great! I also love Jingle all the way, and a film that nobody ever seems to have heard of, although it was given away in the mail sometime earlier in the week (I hate the mail so I missed it) called The Greatest Store in the World. I really really love that one!

Did you know they are making another one of Terry Pratchett's books for Easter, I don't know if he's done any Easter related books but that's something to look forward to.

My favourite Christmas film is probably Gremlins, it's not Christmassy but it's entertaining.

A Christmas Story
Muppets Christmas
Nightmare Before Christmas
Its a Wonderful Life

However...and I do not know why...my all time favorite is The Santa Clause.

you only think it's a great christmas movie because you've all seen it so many times at christmas that it is associated with good memories and such.

it's a good film, but not up there with the best.

in my opinion, obviously

I saw this for the first time a few years back so its not just because its something i grew up with. I think it appealed to me because i was tired of all the traditional santa claus stuff.

i don't watch things like 'elf' cause they are boring and overly produced to me

I like Bad Santa, because it's a little different. Bit depressing though :(

Aladdin Sane
23-12-2007, 11:36 AM
Raymond Briggs Father Christmas
Muppet Christmas Carol
The Nightmare Before Christmas (Although I generally tend to watch it more at Halloween)
Blackadder's Christmas Carol

And I feel really bad, I'd completely forgotten about Hogfather until this thread reminded me about it. I was going to pick it up on DVD too so I could show it to my parents, too late now. :( But that definitely goes on my list. If I ever one day become a father, I want to raise my kids to believe in the Hogfather rather than Santa. :p

I don't think there has been an entire book about the character, but I guess they could always do something involving the Soul Cake Duck since that appears the closest Discworld approximation of the Easter Bunny...

^ it was hard enough to watch with MST3K....

there was always the rare movie that not even mst3k could save cause they couldn't come up with enough riffs (cause it was just too boring or some such)

Hudsucker Proxy (Google it)

It's a cohen brothers movie but co-written by Sam Raimi. It's all based around Chrimbo without really mentioning it and is so Kapraesque you can't help but feel Christmassed up.

Muppets Christmas Shame. Several mentions of Muppet Christmas Carol, and only one (possible) reference to the arguably superior Muppet Family Christmas (assuming this is the one).

The only thing that diminishes the quality of it, is that MFC is clearly meant to be seen on TV only, since all the video and dvd presentations are missing stuff that could only be licensed for television.

My favourite Christmas movie at the moment is probably Love Actually, I reckon.
